PM to meet with Salisbury farmers

Skerrit said he will have a meeting in Salisbury
Skerrit said he will have a meeting in Salisbury

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has said that he will be conducting a town-hall meeting in the Salisbury community to discuss concerns “whether they want it or not.”

His remarks came on the heels of protest action on Monday during which farmers and residents blocked the E.O Leblanc Highway saying the government has neglected roads in the area for too long.

The Prime Minister said the government is not “opposed” to anybody expressing their concerns but “it must be done in a lawful manner.”

He also said government ministers “cannot” go and address the demonstrators directly as was being demanded by protesters on Monday.

“This is tantamount to the police coming to a marijuana plantation and the cultivators of marijuana saying that they want to see the Minister of National Security before they can give up the marijuana to the police,” he said. “It cannot be done.”

Skerrit said that the suggestion was made to the demonstrators that both the Ministers for Public Works and Agriculture, along with their senior staff, were prepared to meet with them anytime on Monday and he was prepared to meet with them on Tuesday at 2:00 pm and following which a date would be set for a town-hall meeting in the community.

He stated the meeting will be held to discuss concerns of farmers and residents.

“We will go down there and have the town-hall meeting whether they not want it or not,” he stated. “the Government will go down there to speak to the farmers, on not only the farm access roads, but on agriculture broadly. So I will go down there to discuss with them.”

By all accounts the naysayers do not want the Prime Minister to meet with the Salisbury farmers. I wonder why. Let me guess; It’s either their concerns are not genuine or they are a bunch of sour grapes who have not recovered from the general election defeat. The dislikes do not change reality. Those in the dog house will remain there to rot.

My dear and precious Prime Minister, why are you even meeting with these lawless and violent dirty farmers. First and foremost, they are not Labour, they don’t deserve attention nor reward for their insubordination against the Great and Mighty Labour Power! They need to understand that the Police, Doctors, Nurses, Lawyers, Educated Professionals, Youths and ALL WEALTHY DOMINICANS are with the blessed Labour Party. Dominica does not like, want or need their type with their dirty clothes and fingernails, smelling like dirt and manure, secretly planting their illegal marijuana up in the bushes and trying to dictate to you, our precious Supreme Leader by blocking the roads that Labour BUILT!!! Forget these idiots my Lord, send in more SSU Officers to put them in their place. How dare them????

Labour of Love, let us remind you that the UWP won the December 8th election and the Labour party stole it through devious means. It therefore means these people are tainted and reflects in the corrupt government that they display. The violent and lawlessness displayed is still exhibited 12 years on, they have not change. “No Law no Constitution……..” the echoed words of the Prime Minister violating the Dominican constitution, a disrespected attutude and you want to lecturer to us about lawlessness. What is it a matter of show me our company I tell you who you are. Who are you for real?

And besides u like to tell people do it themselves, y don’t u lead by example Mr. PM? Y don’t u stop going around the world begging and taking these huge loans for the Salisbury people to pay back? Y don’t u stay home and work with our resources that we have here? Laziness, just hop on plane spending Salisbury people money. Go and fix the road u doh hear?

A very simple, straightforward statement by Prime Minister Skerrit “Want it or not” has rattled the enemies of peace and progress to the point where they have forgotten their sense of purpose and reason.

Judging by the comments being made, It is clear that their intentions were solely to create political mischief, sow discord and perpetuate violence and disorder. No wonder Mr. Thomson Fontaine had put out a call to overseas sympathizers to donate, water and food in support of the protesters. Who knows, maybe he also had plans to ask for weapons, blood and medicine later.

Given that the PM has offered the olive branch to the farmers, the haters are sticking their feet in their mouths, breaking sticks in their ears and gouging out their eyes to demonstrate their opposition to progress. Whether you all want it or not the PM will hold a town hall meeting to seek solutions for the farmers. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Go ahead and put a 100 dislikes.

Now that he referrenced/mention Marijuana, it’s high time that issue is addressed as promised, now that many of the states that demand of Dominica to keep it illegal have addressed it and find that it is better to legalize marijuana in one way or another. Including the view that legalization keeps marijuana from the same sources as hard drugs, lessens related crime due to being illegal and, freeing up the police and police recources to tackle other important issues, because they are stretched thin always in the hills as it is.

The way things are with marijuana in D’a it might as well be legal, just needs to be removed from the underground where crime is associated with hard drugs. Well…..he brought it up. We know they will address roads and feeder roads but just have to humiliate politicall opposition a bit before they do anything. lol .. but seriously!

If there was any doubt in my mind that there are many Dominican fools residing in Canada, and the United States, just reading the comments of some of those who contend that Dominican are ignorant, and lack discipline, etiquette and code of etiquette confirms my theory that most of those people are simply demon possess, and stupid!

Some of those people has no actual concept of what is really taking place in the country, they feel no pain as the people on the ground in Dominica. They speak believing the garbage they talk will make them important in the sight of Skerrit and his cabal!

A innocent man was gun downed in a certain city I believe in Baltimore: from New York to Los Angeles, nation wide people protest the shooting, as a result the five or six police involved has already lost their job, and will soon go no trial, however some Dominicans believe people are wrong to protest when their rights are trampled upon by the government of Dominica.

Let me expose the stupidity of some Dominicans believing themselves to be smart. ‘Etiquette is a simple word defined as the conduct, or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be observed in social or official life!’ Are the people protesting the victimization they suffer at the hands of Skerrit, and the Labor Party serving in any official capacity in the country?

The fools who are talking about etiquette and code of conduct, should relate that to their evil venomous conduct, and bad attitude they portrayed against the people who are protesting the evil perpetrated against them by Roosevelt Skerrit! The poppet’s and ignorant slaves of Skerrit removed the blame from Skerrit, and placed the burden on the backs of the suffering farmers how dumb can people act simply because they want to be into something!

Have you seen the feeder roads to the farms in Marigot lately, and I mean all the feeder roads. It now takes 30 mins to drive to just Vauxhall and now vehicles no longer drive there. Trees are now growing in the farm roads.

After 15 years of this Government it is more expensive now to redo the roads than if it was simply maintained in the first place. A stitch in time saves nine, something this Government knows nothing about. However if some of the foreign artists gave back half of the money Labour party paid during the election, we could start somewhere.

Why do you people even comment without doing proper research beats me….

      • The Facts
        May 14, 2015

It takes years for trees to grow and more than 15 years.. What did James do for them? When will you cease blaming the PM and place the blame where it belongs?
Those who use the feeder roads should have helped to cut down those trees when they began growing. It is a typical example, not helping oneself and always depending on the government. You people have erred.

Let us hope that the planning for this meeting is done collaboratively in the spirit of “Sending Out the Olive Branch”. The PM as head of state should have a discussion with the Parl Rep so that they can together discuss and plan this meeting. Anything short of that will be “Same Old Same Old”. It surely would not be a sign of political maturity in spite of the fact that we claim that we are 36 years old as a nation. Maybe growing up is a very challenging thing for some people. We go see!

    • The Facts

The people who works for government how many hrs a day do they work. The people running the hospital are they qualify. Do the maids and laborers give you 8 hrs of labour for the day. It is a myth to believe the entire Caribbean has the same problem. You need to get familiar with all the islands before you make such a closed statement!

That is a lie hatched in hell that Skerrit and the Labor Party want you and others to believe. Dominica has been the poorest island in the Caribbean, for as long as I can remember, and has become poorer under Skerrit. Take an small island such as Antigua, more than twenty-five thousand Dominicans fled to Antigua where they are surviving better than if the remained in Dominica.

Note: there are no fresh water in Antigua, no Banana, Tanya, and Dashine plantations. Yet the people of Antigua prosper, they have more money than most Dominicans: How do they earn so much!

Dominica has long been a backward place, and it has fallen farther behind under Skerrit, who has followed the stupid advise of people such as Ralph Gonzalez and the Bajan god Hartley who advise him how to screw his country.

When promises are not kept I believe the people have the right to demonstrate and protest. That shows that they are not in favour of what the present administration is doing. The people have voted and they are expecting things to be done. The Prime Minister sounds like a real dictator. Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has said that he will be conducting a town-hall meeting in the Salisbury community to discuss concerns “whether they want it or not.”
Is he really serious? It seems like we have been bought and don’t even know it. That’s how fathers talk to their children. Whoever casted a vote for Skerrit was bought by him unknowingly.
We really need to wake up and take a look at the big picture that keeps unfolding before our eyes.
Before we know it , we will be seeking permission to speak in public because all our rights will be taken away from us.

When Hon. Lennox Linton, Mr. Arthie Martin, UWP Team Dominica, and other Dominicans say Skeritt lacks the leadership qualities to govern Dominica, they are one hundred percent right. It had to take all the daybar on Monday for the man to realize that exactly what he intends to do now, is what should have been done on Monday in the first place. The man not only lacks leadership qualities, but he lacks for sight, diplomacy and the ability to understand when to be a politician and when to be a real loving, understanding human being. The man almost caused death on the roads of Salisbury, because the people of Salisbury did not vote for his party. I hope this fracar on Monday will be a lesson to him, that, when the people talk, he must listen, because they are the ones who are responsible for he being leader of the country.

    • May 13, 2015

So Doc Love you cannot even take full responsibility for an uprising the UWP planned and now is the PM that almost caused death on the roads of Salisbury? Not the protesters? Not the UWP Leadership, not the people who barricaded the highway?

You are not even courageous enough to say the government was indeed smarter than you and did not take your bait. That the Police must be commended for staying firm? So you are looking for someone to blame because you cannot accept that you blew it?

That once again you did wrong. That it was careless planning? That the UWP keep proving what a big disappointment they are that even their supporters are fed up of their constant disruptive ways, that is the only thing they will go down in history for.

Don’t look for anyone to blame the blame is all yours.

Man, whoever you are, yo are lurking and talking a whole load of nonsense. Do not tell me you fall for a this nonsense that was spewed today at this so called conference. The conference came with no concrete for growing the economy, foresight into Dominica`s developmental trends, bit one of begging and looking for friendly countries to baby sit us here in Dominica and you sit there talking about farmers in Salisbury and you will talk.
Lurking the roads have been deteriorating now for 15 years. Skerrit has been busy trying to unseat Spags John for the past years and he failed to sit a DLP person in Salisbury. In the meantime the economy is down, he begging for “Tablets”, and that is the nature of the man, he is a Professor in “HANDOUTs” and cunning poor people. So Salisbury people have been helping themselves long before Skerrit came on the scene with Villas and French passport.

What I do think is, they are taking advantage and overdoing it. They must have been told to stage a protest and to see what the result will be. They would not have done it on their own. They were coerced by their leader and MP.
These people are cantankerous. They place too much pressure on the PM. As there is a God above, one day they will pay for their inconsideration, aggressive and demanding manner.
They need to learn these three godly virtues of love, respect and humility, without which there will be no earthly happiness, peace and unity.

Tell me how do you find that suffering people are taking advantage of something, when they are the ones who are taken advantage of, they are the ones who are been victimized! They are the people who has no spending power, because they are deprived of the feeder roads needed to take them to their plantations.

Facts, I carried loads of Bananas on my head in the late 1950’s walking in mud almost to my knees when I was a little boy; that has a lasting effect on my life. I am alive, I do not, and never will need agriculture for my survival. Clearly you have not traveled the feeder road for Salisbury. It is way beyond “sand, stone, tarish and cement to fix the roads”. It needs heavy equipment and grading before paving. Maybe you should take a journey and try the road. Go up Cuba RD. You won’t have to go far before it becomes impassable. We are not asking for anything different than any other community, we want to go to work. Oh, and feed Dominica

He stated that he drove to section of Salisbury and Carholm and noticed that simple intervention by farmers could have saved several damaged sections of the feeder road.” Mr. Skerrit is losing credibility and every time he opens his mouth to say anything, the credibility question pops out again. He always seems to be playing on the back foot and that makes it difficult to believe anything he says. Here he is blaming the farmers for the condition of the road and says what he observed when he drove on the road. My question is, when did he drive on the road? He cannot be referring to Wednesday March 4th, when he and cabinet staff visited the area, because after the visit he described the road as en emergency and “Clearly these areas are highlight productive especially on the Carholm end of the road but the farmers certainly need help.” He never blamed farmers back then, So why blame them now? Because they protesting? Why didn’t he say that before? When he is in trouble e says…

A democratic country must be led by a democratic government and in the democratic country the government is by the people and the people shouldn’t be slaves to the government , the government is servant of the people . So the Government must go to the people and not the people to the government and I am glad that the government realized that though late .

    • The Facts
      May 12, 2015

The government should also not be their underdog at their every beck and call and every whim and while. They must comprehend who is the PM and who are the public – the people. Everyone, depending on their status, has their place, should know their place and should keep that in mind. The PM is not their little boy.
These people do not know how a democratic government operates. It is something they have to learn. A training session as such is badly needed for such people. No exception also you.

Are you for REAL Mr PM? let my juggle your memory in case you are accused of having ”memoire poule” and take you back to recent protests (1) Calibishie Road Block, (2) Carib Territory Road Block (3) Coulibistrie Road Block; all under DLP watch and before that Colihaut Road Block. At every instance Ministers of your Government came and addressed the protesters right there on the spot. It is totally down-right hypocritical and disgraceful for you and the Min. of National Security to dismiss as nonsensical the request from the Pal. Rep. and people of Salisbury that they be addressed by some Min. of Government. And to add to your disrespectful comment “whether they like it or not” and this foolish Marijuana talk; the Farmers of Salisbury and indeed Dominica are not Criminals please don’t treat them as such.

    • The Facts
      May 12, 2015

It appears these people are famous for protests. They are very good at that but do nothing to assist their country and its revenue.
Dominica will go down in history for the most protests especially in one year. It is not good and gives those protesters a bad name. It also projects they lack patience. They think that the PM picks money off trees and to immediately do everything for them as soon as they proclaim they feel they are in need of.
These people leave a bad taste in the mouths of those who disdain their unbecoming behavior. And again, these villages you mentioned, those who protest give the good people of these areas a bad name. They are not doing themselves a good service. Ignorance is something else.

Mr. Gabriel St. Jean, it is abundantly clear that your comments are not impartial but nakedly partisan and anti-the PM and Government. As to “memoire poule” and ‘juggling’ of memory, the previous instances of road blocking you refer to are readily distinguishable from this one. Firstly, in those instances the protestors did not have the temerity to demand that the PM personally attend their unlawful blockage. Secondly, they did not deliberately and callously block the road, control the blockade and intimidate innocent citizens endeavouring to go about their lawful business. Thirdly, they did not engage in wanton and indiscriminate violence, destruction of property and terror tactics as did your Salisbury ‘martyrs’. Finally, what is “totally down-right hypocritical and disgraceful” is your disingenuity and myopic support for the disrespect, disregard and indiscriminate violence exhibited by the ‘Salisbury rioters’ who hijacked a legitimate cause for their own narrow political…

This is a very profound statement which you have spoken here! It baffles me to read people saying to the Prime Minister of their country like–“We want to speak or meet with you; now move it, or else!

It as if we, Dominicans are ignorant of the concept of Etiquette (or code of behavior) and everyday principles of Life –you don’t decide the time at which you want to meet with your Prime Minister or any other person of Government–they make that decision.

Not only that, the Headline of a News Article on Monday, May 11, said the people of Salisbury rejected the plan which the government had put before them

I truly believe that it is time for Dominicans to acknowledge that their attitude and conduct is what has kept our homeland slowed down in development; we have ignored this truth for much too long!

I often read your comments and not give them a second thought but this here today is going too far. Its only the people in the kitchen feeling the heat. The farmers have been languishing for years and nothing has been done to assist them, Dominica is one of the worst countries for treatment of farmers and farming industry. We sit behind our computers, in our life of luxury and can’t understand or put ourselves in the farmers shoes. You think it is easy after a hard day of laboring on your farm, to have to carry your produce on your back, how far because your 4×4 vehicle is unable to reach your farm? Do you even have a conscience? We often forget that this country’s development is owed to the blood, sweat, and tears of the farmers. A lot of us were able to travel abroad to the US etc because of our parents and grandparents working in the fields, were able to go to school because of them. This “Prime Deceiver” will one day stop ill treating the hard working people of Dominica.

I admire him. Meet them where they are for they have no respect for him. Yet, he did not disrespect them. It is a figure of speech. You are making much ado about nothing.
Ask yourself. If it were another PM as a previous one, what would be the reaction? They probably would not dare stage a protest. They would wait their turn for the road to be fixed.
I imagine what those roads were like in those days and no one bothered to protest. They accepted their lot and with respect and discipline.

whether they want it or not?
    that such a dumb statement..
That was all they asked for in the first place… All that could have been avoided if he has just put the politics aside and be the leader he claims he was..Salisbury farmers have been crying about their situation for years and been ignored, only so much people can take…Then you have who wanna open their mouth when tax paying citizen tied of being victims..One day someone has to stand and say enough…..

We will go down there and have the town-hall meeting whether they do not want it or not,” Roosevelt your arrogance and narcissism will catch up with you in a dramatic way. In March you had a meeting in Salisbury and made promises just the same. It was your own Town Hall meeting – wasn’t it.
Your analogy with the marijuana planters is out of place and child like-The demonstrators are not asking for the privilege to circumvent the law. The demonstrators were acting within their rights and asking for just entitlement. But then again Roosevelt cant think on his feet and so we have to bow our heads just to think that this is the quality intellectual capability that represent our country at the highest level.

The hoopla was about meeting with the PM on their terms but the PM decided to meet with them on his terms, Want it or not the PM was given a mandate to lead the country and not to be led by the country. Take that Amarossa. If you are from Salisbury I urge you to attend the town hall meeting and air your greivances.

Did you not hear one of the people interviewed yesterday say that they do not want any discussion, but only action? So the PM is right. For some reason, some of the people commenting here only find it pleasing to make political comments, so because they are against the PM their statements are negative. Let us wait to see what is presented to the people, and let me pray that the promises can materialize in the shortest possible time for the benefit of all Dominicans.

Well, what if all those “security” people that chase after mister in the shiny black SUVs all brought a spade fork and a few bags of cement? The “meeting” could be short and the progress substantial.

You are testing my patience but here goes:
democracy in its simplest form means “government by the people” and not by one man alone!
It comes form the ancient Greek: “demos” ( from the area around the old city state of Athens), which came to mean the common people and kratos = rule.
It was conceived exactly to do away with autocracy (= one man rule) and dictatorship.
