PM wants pastors to pray more

prayPrime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has called on pastors in Dominica to pray more, preach more and familiarize themselves with the treaties that govern CARICOM.

His statement stemmed from an ongoing controversy surrounding Jamaican artiste, Earlan ‘Alkaline’ Bartley who is soon to perform in Dominica.

The Dominica Association of Evangelical Churches (DAEC) is strongly opposing the performance and has voice its concerns but earlier this week, Skerrit said unless the artiste poses a security threat, the government cannot prevent him from entering and performing in Dominica.

“Seriously I think the pastors needs to pray more,” he said on state-owned DBS Radio’s Talking Point on Wednesday. “Why would you be afraid of one man coming for two hours in the country if you have 364 days to preach?”

Additionally the Prime Minister said pastors need to preach more.

“I think you need to preach more, preach the word in a manner in which your following will not be strayed by somebody who you consider to be somebody who the country should not allow to come in or people should not go to listen to,” he stated.

He also wants DAEC “to inform itself properly on the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas” and made it clear that “the government isn’t going to take any action” against Alkaline.

Meanwhile the Prime Minister stayed away from the Tommy Lee Sparta saga, which DAEC had played in instrumental role in.

“The last road I do not want to talk about it really, but it was a different circumstance,” he remarked. “But in respect to Alkaline there is no basis to prevent the man from coming.”

Tommy Lee and his entourage were deported last year after they were prevented from entering the island. He was set to perform at a concert in Portsmouth. DAEC has said his music glorifies Satan and promotes violence.

His attorney has threatened to take the matter to the Caribbean Court of Justice, however there are indications that it will be settled out of court.

This is for the Christians and government nor only of Dominica, but of Canada, and every other nation where DNO is read.

”Faith without works is dead.” (St. James)

Christ said we are to ”Bind the strong man” which refers to prayer, AND ”soil his goods”, which means get in there with hands on, and do the practical stuff when necessary.

Sometimes we should sign a petition :!:

Sometimes we should hold a demonstration :!:

Sometimes we should buy newspaper or radio advertising.

We must also TEACH people – especially the young people – what is actually WRONG with what we are opposing and the harm it does or might do.

If the devil can get Christians to be satisfied ONLY to pray he will be laughing!

Yes, we must PRAY. But we must ALSO remind our politicians that we the tax payers, we the voters who put them in office, do not want certain evils in our country. Next election time we will remember. Yes, we will remember.

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald…

The church has a right to protest the invitation of Alkaline but there is nothing that they they can do to prevent him from performing in DA. What is the church afraid of? That this lone artist will lead their flock astray? If the church is afraid of one artist then the problem is not with Alkaline but with Christianity. If your faith is strong then you should have no fear. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31.

      April 21, 2015

Some of you use the wrong words. Who said the church is afraid of him? They simply do not want him to perform in Dominica for reasons they cited. Why do you not comprehend that? Re-read the article from the beginning.

    • April 28, 2015

It is not a battle against the Alkaline concert.

It is a battle against lyrics filled with sex, drugs, devil worship, rebellion, and disobedience.

It is not a battle against one lonely artist.

It is a battle against the artist times as many people as attend the concert because they will be influenced by the man and each person will carry that forward.

This kind of performance is a “portal” through which the forces of evil enter a locality where sin is already rampant. Drug use and illicit sex are part – and only part – of the fabric of the red carpet over which
      demons rush in.

It is sad to read the comments of people as they mock the concept of demons and Satanic influence. There is a tendency for people to make a joke of something they are afraid of. People do it to hide or mask their fear. It is known as a “defence mechanism.”

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill, D.D., International Evangelist.

Wasn’t it those same pastors that were worshiping Skerrit with Mathew Walters? Didn’t they lift him up as Jesus on the fateful day?
Well ‘Jesus’ has ordered them to pray, so they must and they will, with humble compliance.

Good for them! They were warned. Skerrit does not need you guys anymore. You are a bother to him. He has already gotten what he wanted from you pastors who entered into that unholy aliance with him to conspire against the truth and against God.

SO YOU SHOULD PUT YOUR TAILS BETWEEN YOUR LEGS NOW AND GO AND PRAY…..UNTIL THE NEXT ELECTIONS

Good for the pastors. Why during the political campaign you all were closing your churches to attend those rallies? Nowadays christians like to compromise too much. Shame, shame, shame. The same pastors were mellowing ‘ the voice of the people is the voice of God’. Hon PM continue reminding them to Pray more and Preach more. The harvest is plenty but the labourers are few.

The Prime Minister has a right to speak his mind, to an issue which has called for his decision–the churches are called to be the Body of Jesus Christ and He is the head.(Elizabeth Xavier).

You are very wrong here Elizabeth; be reminded the Bible you read said “render unto Cae’sar, the things that are Cesar’s, and unto God the things that are God.” Caesar was a politician, so too is Skerrit. Skerrit has no power over the Church; and I mean true believers in God, maybe he has power over the buildings and that may be why he spent five hundred thousand dollars of taxpayers money installing a roof on his boy bishop building. Note: the buildings are not the Church!

The Church is the body of people, the congregation who worship God through Jesus Christ. That should not have anything to do with politics; remember Elizabeth there is always conflict between church and State; the two do not go together; never have, and never will! If Skerrit wish to become involved in the work of…

This is so stupid! You are lucky that most of the people who comment here, are the same as you–other wise you would get a whiplash each time you write so foolishly.

You have again used the Scriptures out of context–The Prime Minister did not make any demand on the Churches, the Church is the one who called for his response. He has that right; never regardless of how he does so–the final outcome has to be by his decision–bottom line!

“Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has called on pastors in Dominica to pray more, preach more and familiarize themselves with the treaties that govern CARICOM.”(DNO).

Elizabeth, when I was a kid; my grandmother one day advised me ” if is one thing you do in this life, learn to read and write a letter of your own.” I did that prior to educating myself at a higher level; you should know by now, I am both college, and university educated, and although I may seem dumb, if it is one thing I know how to do is “read!”

I do not know how you interpret what is in the quote above; surely I fail to see how you manage to deduced your comments.

“Once you learn to read you’ll forever be free”(Frederick Douglas).

      • April 21, 2015

Telemaque. if you are trying to tell me that you can read and understand better than I do, then that too is extremely foolish of you.

Also, I do not know, and I do not believe in your College and University talks–that is a products of your carnal mind–another piece of your habit of lying.

You have tried to remove or reword the theme of that message above, to suit your stupid mind production–you do that all the time

You know very well that the issue is based on the Churches idea–not to accept a young artiste to perform in Dominica–they wanted a response, and the Prime Minister choose his best way to do–stop making a continuous fool of yourself–bottom line.

As in “Mind your business”?! Mr. Skerritt… is being a little disingenuous.
The church has a responsibility to ensure that the society they operate in are served to the fullest extent of their mandate. Ensuring that negative, decadent behaviour does not harm or adversely impact our society, esp our youth, is a big responsibility of the church.
There are things that do need prayer, but there are things that require action. To tell the church to shut up is basically rude and sets a bad precedent and tone – esp for the man who recently gave $500K to the RC church. People just expect the church to crawl under a rock and be silenced? Why… so we can peddle our immorality unchalleneged? Old-fashioned morals and values are the buildings blocks of ANY society…. and removing them is like removing the foundation of your beautiful house…

While this Alkaline fella has a right to peddle his acid, the church has an obligation to challenge immorality and voice its concerns on social…

Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “If you (we) keep quiet, even the stones will cry out.”
St. Paul said, “God’s Kingdom is not made up of words but of power.” I assume, not (only) words but of action. It is a mandate for Christians. Everyone must be informed accordingly and acquaint themselves with it.
The Church cannot keep quiet. This is their position in the world even amidst persecution.

Does Skeritt really expect Dominicans to drink that wear and tear pills. What we expected the Prime Minister to say was that, it is alleged, he travelled two or three or four hundred times last year, therefore, as he is getting older, the time has come to do more work at home then to do so much travelling. If Linton and them fellers want to travel regularly, for instance they were all over the world including, Five U.S States, the Caribbean last year, now Washington and later England, that is a matter for them.

Is that the number of days in a year? If so I thought it was 365 or 366 leap year. maybe A Doubting Thomas can help with this”

In fact, I commented on that very same line of the Prime Minister, that was the line he used to condemn the demands of the Churches–that young man is only one person in our country for just a few hours–what would be the reason to fear him, when we ourselves are supposed to be “Spiritual Giants”–not only that; we would have 22 hours of that day and 364 more days to do the work we are called to do–as Leaders of the Churches.

They are silent on too many issues.. Alkaline should be invited to church before he leaves im sure he would have put some of that money he collected int the offering bowls.

Well they say out of situations ideas are born so here is mines.. create a system whereby artists who comes to perform goest to a church after he performs, or maybe even before. by this the church will be parked to its capacity therefore more offering… ouch i forgot.. the pastors would not want that kind of money in their church.. but one thing i know it does not matter where money comes from is either dead or famous people picture that on them, in fact the only alive person i know that on money is Elizabeth..

I reside in Canada. If the PM and of course the Immigration Minister know the morals of Tommy Lee and this Alkaline, I bet they would be prohibited from entering Canada.
Canada is a sovereign country. Nationals would not hear the Canadian PM state, because it is a sovereign country and is on good terms with the US President and others he will ignore the concerns of nationals based on morals and principles and welcome people who were charged with murder and whose lyrics are unfit to hear.
We must not compromise the innocence of children for CARICOM.
As we live, CARICOM is not supporting us and will not be judging us when we die. CARICOM is merely some heads of states coming together, each with their own indifference and sins, not being able to agree on anything which smirks of division and disunity.
Each government of their country still have the right to decide who should be welcome or not, based also on reputation and the type of offensive lyrics in their songs.

  25. April 15, 2015

Sometimes I am critical of Mr. Skerrit and his Govt. but on this occasion I must compliment him on the appropriate response to the Evangelicals, this is diplomacy at it’s best .This is an indictment in my opinion on the mentality of those pharisees. I believe that there should be a national day of repentance, soul searching , seeking God’s forgiveness instead of playing the game of the republican and the sinner who were at prayer. Too much holier than thou attitude and mentality that is why they are not effective any more.

But my question is if he felt they were too unspiritual then WHY did he pay them for spiritual advise? How disrespectful Skerrit! I wonder how the pastor from the north feels? I wonder how those evangelist feel? Boys go and “pray more and preach more” you hear. Hear is the voice of the government on Tommy Lee: “Meanwhile Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that the authorities in Dominica “had jurisdiction under the relevant laws to make the determination.
“A significant portion of our communities are Christian and they have expressed outrage of this particular individual. The Ministry of National Security and Immigration would have had to consider all the factors DNO – 2/ 25/14. Time has changed…

The PM should have left the praying and preaching out of it. It is like throwing words as some do on this Website.
Reading between the lines, know that, what the PM indirectly insinuated to DAEC is, it is none of their business and mind their own business.
Sorry PM, this time you are not correct. God has taken note of your words. Based under the circumstances, your advice is not well-meant. Even though to you and some others as you who lack godly spiritual enlightenment and graces, you gave a godly advice, it was not a worthy one.

We Christians are too hypocrite. Lets clean up our backyard before we can clean up others own. Our Pastors no longer want to go on the highways and byways . Instead they hide behind tinted windows in their expensive vehicles. They are more concerned about pocketing the BIG SALARY taxfree while the ordinary member is struggling to make two ends meet. Today pastoring has now become a business. What a shame! Our churches are now plagued with greed adultery, fornication, envy just to name a few, and we sit on our blessed assurance doing nothing . If they wanted Akaline to refrain from coming to our shores their prayers would have stopped him and not endanger the treasury of Dominca with another Law suit. The Prime Mininter has his job to perform which involves adhering to Caricom enacted treaties.

    • April 15, 2015

That is true. Right now the church that Jesus Christ died for where spiritual food should be given to the hungry soul has now turned around in the opposite direction to become a party house with eating and drinking . We can now see that we are leaving in the last days. Jesus said my house shall be called a house of prayer but we have turned it into a house of banqueting and a den of thieves. We need to first repent and then pray . God does not hear the prayer of an unrepentant heart. Our Prime Minister has enough to deal with, we ought not to put more trouble in the man’s plate.

I am not a Skerrit Labour Party supporter, and i will never be one. However his response to the DAEC is dead right. These men talk about minor anf frivolous issues only, the major ones like corrupt leaders, leaders who are stealing, lying and cheating, they dont talk about that at all.

  44. Oh No
    April 15, 2015

A typical response to the PM’s views is a reflection of what type of religious and or spiritual person you are. Out of respect, I think the prime minister is out of place. He is not qualified based on spiritual providence to advise men and women of God unless he is a Godly-spiritual leader. From a moral point of view, in my opinion, he is questionable.

But I say, he got their votes he can now tell them what he wants. He gave them free gospel jams and used various techniques to get them on his side. What do I say then? It might be good for those who selectively make their position known. But the prime minister is simply disrespectful to the religious folk.

    • The Facts
      April 15, 2015

I agree. In this case he should not have made such a statement. It is uncalled for. DAEC reserves the right, as a religious group, to be concerned about this man being invited to perform in Dominica and to speak against it. Christians are obligated to do so. It is a mandate from God, given to them as Christians. None are exempt from it whether they are the PM, political ministers or other nationals.
The PM needs to study Holy Scripture especially the New Testament. He is not well-versed in it. In fact, not at all. If he were, he would not have made such a statement and a put-down one.
The thought is crossing my mind (hopefully through inspiration), “Actually, the words the PM used to DAEC about praying and preaching, he gave God a slap in his face and a kick in … you know where.”
This is awful for one who is a Christian. Christian? Some Christian! Our patient God has taken note. Jesus never forgets! Another thought, every doggie has its day.

    What nonsense!

I classified him as a god long ago, but this is too much. Who the hell is Skerrit to dictate how much should a preacher pray; and pray for what? If he is suggesting that they pray to keep him in power let me remind him that there is a part of scripture which read: ” God does not hear sinners payer!”

Some of those so called preachers do not even believe in God, if they did; they would preach the word of God, and not their personal philosophy, or that of other men.

Secondly, praying is an individual thing; we have to pray for ourselves. We who are believers, who has established our personal relationship with God, pray to him in the name of Jesus to his Father for what we wish to happen in our personal life’s.

Thirdly he instructs us to pray for our enemies, and those who use us despitefully, perhaps Skerrit is asking his corrupt, so called pastures to pray for him, since he knows he has hurt many people in our country, and has become the enemy of many…

DNO, are you having trouble with your Website or have you changed your format? The following is in response to Francisco Telemaque’s comments. It shows as an original.

Based on what he stated, from my point of view he has tremendously erred. God has heard him. He can consider himself in hot water with God who takes note of all our words.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        April 16, 2015

Dear Facts, I would like you to point out where I erred, so that if there is a statement I need to correct, I have a chance to do so. I know I am not perfect, but I endeavor to not lie or make any erroneous statements or say anything that cannot be substantiated where it pertains God, by his words in the Bible.

And indeed there is a glitch on the site. If you go to the very bottom of this link, you will find something written by me, I wrote that this morning in response to Elizabeth at the very top, that which you may read was the last paragraph of three, it appears as if that was the first submission on the topic.

Francisco, you did not read my comment properly. You misunderstood what I stated. I did not refer to you. I referred to the PM. Note that I wrote “he . . .”.

There was a glitch on DNO last night. While writing my comment, I also got booted out, right off. It was not only strange but I found it disappointing and frustrating that this could have occurred. I wondered what was happening. DNO seems to have a lot of problems with its Website, be it occasionally.

    • April 16, 2015

@ Francisco Telemaque April 15, 2015 “Who the hell is Skerrit to dictate how much should a preacher pray:

And I am asking, who are you that you should rebuke the Prime Minister’s council to the Hierarchy of the Churches or to any sector in his Nation–Dominica?

Right in that message of yours above, you are contradicting yourself “with your God does hear sinners prayer” followed by your “Some of those so called preachers do not even believe in God”.

The first is spoken out of context, every scripture of the Bible has a location–don’t just tell about them; you did not understand what you read. There are many people like me who wiii call you out. The second is simply your own philosophy –your favorite song–it is irrelevant to us readers

      • April 16, 2015

The Prime Minister has a right to speak his mind, to an issue which has called for his decision–the churches are called to be the Body of Jesus Christ and He is the head.

Faith is the weapon by which we can have victory; this Faith motivates Hope and causes us to grow in the Spirit as we speak its words in prayer–personally and socially The Church cannot just sit around and to tell the government or the Leader of such, what to do and not do

“Why would you be afraid of one man coming for two hours in the country if you have 364 days to preach?”–that is factual.

In other words the hierarchy of the churches are not doing the work which they are called to do, by FAITH and HOPE so that our God of Love and Holiness might be glorified This kind of grounding must take its mode while the people are still young; when a person has the Mind of Love, the product of Love will manifest –it is the ways of Love in Jesus Chris

      • April 16, 2015

Nonetheless, the Elders are called to pray by “Supplication” and “Intercession” with faith and hope, for the betterment of their homeland or worldwide–I am sure that is what Prime Minister Skerrit is saying. His job is to rule; the role of the Church’s hierarchy is to call among themselves for pray and constant preaching of the Gospel of Life to the Nation –not advocating fear, futiliy and death to the people–as they so often do.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        April 16, 2015

There are no contradictions in what I wrote!

You are simply trying to bully, and overpower me as usual; I have every right to rebuke Skerrit, since his motive is political. Your love-boy Skerrit wants to be head dictator over everything, and everybody. (well I doh going and let me Almost Nearly Cousin rule over me eh!)

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

Seriously, the places where he should involved himself he avoids. We have a situation referred to as the Crab back affair: read it for yourself, he has decided not to interfere in that which is political: the firing of that security guard is political, for all I know; your love-boy Skerrit must be the one who instigated his dismissal, and he did it to spite (me real cousin; Lennox Linton). Skerrit should advise his hatchet man to reinstate the fired guard. Tell your boy to pray for that!

Now I know the pressing issues tha t Skerrit had to take care off. He had to read the treaty of chaguaramus and analyze the performance of pastors so he could ride in on a donkey on Pentecost feeling like the liberator ;the one championing the cause of artists most despised by hypocrites and judgemental parasites. The king washed his hands from the mess he and his yes men created in the handling of Tommy Leee Sparta and now the king the Peter Augustine declared wise man has unearthed the fallacies of the Religous leaders.

Who is the savior after slavery if an African slave found reading a bible it would be time for a hanging and celebration. Three hundred yrs later we are still praying to a white jesus to tell us what to do and save us. Dominica cannot feed it self without the slave master. All preachers should be engaged in feeding the nation. We need to raise1.000.000 chickens to feed the nation.pm is correct stop wasting time us your brains to help build the country.

      April 15, 2015

My brother, our people do not understand that religion is their enemy. Religion is another form of slavery and never frees one’s mind. The slave masters used religion to make us subservient, docile and fearful of death and hell. How could the people who enslaved us turn around and free/save us? We have been praying since we were born and our predicament gets worse by the minute.
We need to free ourselves from the white slave masters’ religion and find our spirituality once again as African people. Do you know slavery has been reformed through religion?
Even our own preachers are exploiting the congregation. Poor people are causing these pastors to live a grandiose lifestyle while they try to make ends meet. They are giving their hard-earned money to these preachers believing that they are giving to god. Tell me, if there is a god, whom one can’t see, why and what is he doing with the money? We need to use our minds and stop letting these pastor/preachers take us for granted.

    April 15, 2015

Last February, in relation to Tommy Lee Sparta —
“…Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that the authorities in Dominica “had jurisdiction under the relevant laws to make the determination whether or not somebody ought to be allowed into the State whose utterances, whose conduct and whose past could either trigger some form of breach of the peace or affecting the whole concept of public morality”.

“Our Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court has made it clear that it is a matter for the Executive Branch of Government to ensure that steps are taken together with the police authorities and otherwise to protect the integrity of the State on matters concerning public order or public morality.”

What happened to those laws? Somebody call Astaphan to check the laws again. Or is he busy leading a prayer meeting?! So much for incompetence, just don’t let his check bounce, he has a mansion in Florida to maintain with your VAT payments!

    • The Facts
      April 15, 2015

When the time comes they must stand up and speak out for the truth. There are times they do not, when they should.
The organizers took it upon themselves to invite those undesirables to Dominica which is just what they are, obviously without first consulting the PM and prior to making their visit and performance public.
Tommy Lee should never have been invited and for one he is a murderer. Those organizers have their heads in a hole and do not think much of Dominica and its nationals, especially the youths. They do not care and do not accord nationals their due rights and dignity also to complain.
Dominicans have the right to object to such people entering their country. It is their country and the working adults and business owners are taxpayers Their voices should be heard and taken into consideration. The majority always win. They have the right to inform the PM and relevant officials about it, that these types of people are unworthy to perform in Dominica.

  52. Mamizoo
    April 15, 2015

Well Levi Peter could have easily been a pastor since his dad was a pastor – so may be Levi could have prayed more before he allowed such a travesty on Tommy Lee Sparta. Now the Tommy Lee Sparta was incident was a national incident and the smart king who knew the treaty of Chaguaramas at the time did not see it fit to intervene. Tony Astaphan, Lennox Lawrence, Alick Lawrence Duncan Stowe etc did not see it fit to say no this is wrong.
Maybe the religious leaders were too busy cashig in their $500K check, the $150 K here and there. We have to pardon the religious leaders for not praying and reading cause if they were ore people would be aware of the mass corruption under the Labor party administration – the viscous lies, the deception, the abuse and disrespect to women. the deliberate act of impoverishing the people for political advantage.

Everyone is responsible for praying for him/herself and praying for their country and their nationals (in fact the entire world) with no exception. God expects this of them. If the PM is not doing that, it is timely for him to do so.
This is another question you should ask him, “Are you praying for Dominica, for us and for yourself?” As a mortal, a Christian, he is not exempt.

The Prime Minister in on target. His advice to the pastors on this matter is sound. Its a shame really, that Pastors has be be cautioned by the Prime Minister. I am an evangelical and has opposed the DAEC view on homosexuals coming as tourist and the deportation of Tommy Lee. The state was dead wrong to deport a CARICOM national that had not committed an offence. Any homosexual has a right to come to Dominica. And all homosexuals should be welcomed in church. For such did my saviour died.

    • Angel Giraudel
      April 15, 2015

You are so right about them coming into the church. God loves the “sinner” and hates the “sin”. They will walk into the church as homosexuals and walk out as normal straight thinking beings. They will definitely receive Jesus and therefore, they will never be the same again.

The amount of prayers they should receive will certainly change their lives forever. More church goers less homosexuals. The praying people should be able to cast the demons spirits of homosexual out of them period.

Absolutely PM! These Pastors keep ignoring the silent cries of our children. It is heart wrenching to read about a 9 year old girl brutally attacked, her innocence was taken away from her in a very vicious manner, a fifteen year old raped by her biological father, where is the outrage? It pains my heart, I feel chills throughout my body. Pastors, please re-direct your focus, Alkaline is not the enemy, he may be staring right back at you in the mirror. We must stand up for our children who are molested on a daily basis. Until we do, crimes will continue to escalate, not because of Alkaline, but our failure to address the origin of the ills. What the Prime Minister of Dominica wittingly did was to simply take away one day from the 365 days a year that you are most informed about, I must add, for the Alkaline performance, hence leaving a total of 364 days to make his point. I am sure you are thinking, with mouth aghast, that 2 hours does not make up one day. However, given the nature of the circumstance i.e the artist’s travel time, his time spent on the island plus his performance time, it would be perfectly fine to estimate the duration as 1 Day. I hope that helps and it’s not “too late”.
