Q95 under fire; CEO responds

Local radio station, Q95, has come under fire from some of its listeners after the station decided to air a national rally organized by the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) on Sunday.

Some took to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the decision with some even saying they will be boycotting the station.

But CEO of Q95, Sheridan Gregoire, told DNO on Monday that the station has always been open to everyone and has an open door policy.

“The station has not been closed to anyone,” he stated.

With little or no air time on other radio stations, Q95 has become the main channel for opposition parties to express their views. Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, is a frequent call-in guest on popular shows such as the Hot Seat. While other radio stations carry government related functions, it appears as if the station is frequently left out of the loop.

The station has been dubbed by some a “blue station” (blue is the color of the United Workers Party) and even government officials and DLP supporters refuse to directly call it by name, only referring to it as “the other radio station.”

And so questions began popping on Sunday when the DLP rally was being carried live.

“Can anyone please tell me what is going on, WHY is Q95 broadcasting the DLP Rally?” someone asked on Facebook.

Another poster wrote, “Q gone red?.. .. nah, I definitely don’t believe that! But something is not right! Dominican’s (sic) must wake up!”

Gregoire told DNO that the Q95 has always been open to the DLP, although he admitted the party has not made much use of the station.

“When we first started, we had written to all three political parties but only two of them accepted the offer to have their shows, the Labour Party chose to have theirs on another radio station,” he explained. “So we really have been open.”

He stated that “now and then” the DLP has been airing ads on the station and when the party approached a sales rep for the airing of the rally, he had no objections to it.

“The Labour Party is a political party like any other political party,” he stated, adding that other organizations, such as the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), have paid programs on the station.

“So essentially we are open at all times to anybody,” Gregoire stated. “It is just that people probably noticed that it is not very often that the Labour Party has been offing to put things on Q95. Maybe it was a surprise to people.”

To drive home his point on Q95’s open door policy, Gregoire stated that even Pappy Baptiste once had a show on the station.

“Pappy had a show for a while on Q95,” he stated. “Everyone who comes on has to pay for their airtime. UWP pays for their air time and so is the (Dominica) Freedom Party. Labour Party paid for their air time and I don’t see anything wrong there.”

People need to raise their level of thinking. Everything does not have to be politics. This is a private radio station that depends on customers to pay for programs. The station does NOT belong to the opposition party or any party so there is nothing wrong with the airing of the labor party rally since it was a paid program. It would be a foolish business decision to refuse to air a paid program unless the intent of the program was to commit a crime. As the owner indicated, this is an open station for anyone who wants to pay the fees to air a program. It is because of the openness and fairness of the station that the official opposition party and others are able to air their programs on the station and people are able to call and express their views. The station does not have to stoop to the level of DBS and Kairi by not allowing some parties to use their airwaves. The CEO is obviously a smart businessman who does NOT have a small mind!

The problem with Q95 is that they don’t communicate with their listeners…it is called common courtesy. This leaves them open to speculation and rumors from the public. They do it all the time. It happened when Matt had his issue in the past. All they had to do was say…Q95 will not be having it’s regular Sunday programming due to the paid live broadcast of the DLP rally, rather than have people wondering what’s going on. Q95 please treat us with more respect. Thank You.

I will sure miss this guy. Loved his show. He was not just political. He was well read, witty, and inspirational. I wish I could have another medium to listen to him. Mr. G, can you and Angelo reconcile and get him back to us. He was a great addition to Q95 – He could back up his stories with information unlike Matt. He was not hypocritical, and he was quite knowledgeable about Dominca’s history. He was lively, fluent and just great to listen to. I MISS YOU ANGELO ALLEN.

Are you for real? Why should I listen to DLP propaganda on Q. I already can do that any time on Kairi or DBS.

Mr.. Gregoire and Q-95 I applaud you all for this move as you represent and respect the principle and purpose of broadcasting. The issue is we (Q 95, staff and followers and fans) must be seen to thinking and operating from a higher standard to that of Kairi and DBS, where our tax money goes.
Dominicans, please rise above the small mindedness of political corruption of the Labour Party and its blind followers, let us rise high., very high and stay there. They, the corrupt Labour government will go soon and we must stay focus as we have a great and dedicated Leader of the Opposition and of the UWP guiding us all the way with the hoes hardworking UWP Team. Do Not fall for Skerrit crap and political illiteracy.

tHANK YOU Q95 FOR BROADCASTING THE RALLY. We need to know what the leaders are saying whether we support them or not. It is your duty to broadcast such events, whether it be red or blue or green or yellow. With politics and religion comes division. Meanwhile they insist that church is separate from state. The peoples political beliefs are as strong as their religious faith. People should free themselves from partisan politics and focus on moral standing. only then will there be unity and prosperity without need for branding through colors.

The DLP regime knows this so why not sabotage the degree to which Q95FM Radio Station is successful in producing the desired listenership result or success.

Where are we now – exactly where the DLP visualised… Mr Angelo Allen’s relationship with Q95FM Radio Station being in ruins.

  17. Q95FM Radio Station has fallen for PM Skerrt's bait
    May 9, 2017

How amazing PM Skerrit and the Labour Party administration can come up with ingenious ways of normalising all institutions of gov’t on island through crafty manipulation. Such cunning behaviour by a regime over the years who has boldly demonstrated that it despises Q965FM Radio Station and the opposition United Workers Party – Team Dominica – it’s beyond comprehension why “Q” has fallen for the trap of airing the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) national rally on Sunday. The DLP’s single and clear intention was to bring anarchy to Q95, with the outcome being to affect Mr Angelo Allen’s “Weekly Headlines Sunday Evenings” show.

The best thing in Dominica to have happened to a people living their daily lives without fear of exercising their right to express any opinions without censorship and restraint is the likes of Mr Angelo Allen, Mathias (Matt) Peltier, Hon Lennox Linton, Carlisle Jno-Baptiste among others.

I listened to Matt this morning explaining that Q95 was not politically alligned and that it was a business! I guess that in Dominica, it is anything for a Dollar, to hell with principles, you can beatup on me as long as you just give me some money,or a house! What does this say about the moral fabric, self pride and values of our society? Our ‘corporate citizens’ should also be principled and look for the good of the nation. Everything cannot just be “sorry, it’s just business”. Or is it that everybody has their price? What does this say to the Dominicans who supported Q95 when Q95 was under assault and deprivation by this administration, who stood by them through the thin and hard times?
This is just the first move to reduce the opposition’s access to the air waves, Just wait!!

I do understand Mr. Gregoire’s rational. Q95 is his business and the last thing he wants to do is run it at a loss. The air time is available to all, within legal limits but has to be financed and if the DLP is prepaired to stump up the fee, why refuse them access? On the other hand, with DBS and Kairi carrying the same broadcast simultaneously there is no need to tune in to Q95. Matt Peltier may have convinced mr. Gregoire that he is the one that brings in the bacon but I find him too predictable and I simply switch off when I know he comes with a programme say for Fine Foods, Dominica brewery, the Muslim store etc., because I do not want to listen at length to irrelevant advertising that does not stimulate. the mind. Matt’s format does not work for me. Sorry, but I found Angelo Allen far more stimulating and informative. I shall miss his early morning programme that was like an irreverent tonic.

    • May 9, 2017

I wondered if Sheridan Gregoire got a phone call from the ruling administration, after all Q95 Station had been going thru so much insults, and everyone who listen to it are small minded people DLP kept saying for years. DLP have been targeting the station for years and are they putting pressure on them, and is that why Angelo Allen is off the air ? come on Sheridan be honest with us don’t take us as fools . For Q95 to cover DLP row row meeting something is up and CEO must understand and accept the different comments from supporters of the station.
We want to see Angelo back on air because he is the only person who can really keep the people tuned in I know the station is going to feel the heat from their supporters, and Matt stop trying to explain this mess you sound like a DLP supporter.

The most backward country in the Caribbean… Why? Politics…

Let politics run your lives still…
Let politics decided how you should sleep…

Don’t let politics make you feel you are “Entitled” as this would be a “life mistake”…

Don’t let the different factions decided the color of the clothes on your back… or you would be no better than the gangsters the colors represents…

How can you all watch yourselves and get angry with a radio station for doing GOOD FKN BUSINESS!!!

Is it because the nature of the business is… red? or blue? or even green?

This is why D/ca is backwards… our taxes are going up but we are off little business mind…

Money should come before politics… Every time!
Family, friends, daily life, work and soooo many other things should come before politics…

    Stand together people…

When a government gets elected they should ban the reference of colors…

It would be for the best…

The question here is not if UWP or DLP owns Q95 because we all know it’s a business that’s opened to all. However, the problem is the manner in which Q95 disrespected their fan base especially at a time when there are so many questions in the air. Gregoire and management knew they were paid to carry the DLP convention and therefore all they had to do is let the public know that first of all, Angello Allyne will not be on and probably might never be on again, and Q95 will be carrying the live broadcast. In that case people like myself that always listen to Angello would plan otherwise. To crook us the way they did sure gives me no trust in them and from now on I will not listen to any radio station on island. By keeping it as a secret from us is a clear sign that it was part of their agreement with Skerrit so those of us who can’t listen to the filth of the DLP would be forced to hear it on Q95.

Laborites appeared not to have had any interest in what Skeritt and his ministers had to say on Sunday. Their major interest was that Angello was at home, and Skeritt’s voice was heard all over the world on Q95. The same party which sued the radio station on many occasions, the same radio station Skeritt and Tony have been afraid to enters its studios, the same radio station apart from the AG, all ministers of government consider it to be the devil’s residence. The same station which encourages honesty and tolerance. Father Charles must have blessed the steps of the station, because he too is afraid to enter the studio, I believe that is why Q95 is now the love of the DLP. In time to come, Skeritt will climb the blessed steps of Q95 and be interviewed by either Angello or Matt in the Morning. I wish to commend the CEO, who knows, maybe, one day Mr. Linton and Skeritt will be in the studios of Q95, sitting side by side being interviewed by Kamala and Matt

How is it that Dominicans are so reticent about the abuse by the governing party of the national radio station DBS. This is a State asset, not the property of any party, government nor opposition. Every responsible political party should have access. Tax payers help to keep this radio station operational. It should not be used like the ruling party’s propaganda machine regardless of which political party is in power. It’s in the public’s best interest to hear all political views then they have the right to support which party would serve them best. Dominicans should be shouting at their loudest to Free up DBS to all political parties. If given that chance and anything libelous is said to put the station in legal jeopardy, then that party should be banned.

Some of you do not think. A government owned and/or operated Radio Station has a right to be selective in what type of programs are aired, similarly what type of issues that are aired.
The same applies to all Radio Stations such as other countries which are owned/ operated by the government. They do not allow any quasi people and issues aired on their Radio Station whether it is paid for by taxpayers. These Stations are set apart from the other secular ones. The public should expect nothing less.
If you owned a Radio Station would you allow someone or a political Party for that matter to be on your Station and lambasting you? Use your head.

      • Ibo France
        May 9, 2017

@Original It’s people like you with your distorted, antiquated thinking who stifles progress in this country. Anything that is owned by a government is a public asset. Anything that is public belongs to the citizens of that particular country. Every tax payer pays for the upkeep of that entity. Because all tax payers contribute to keeping DBS on air, the ruling political party should not have exclusive rights to it to spread their propaganda. This is undemocratic! Democracy cannot flourish in Dominica when only one party is allowed to use government facilities. We, the citizens, should be allowed to listen to differing political arguments on DBS as the DLP alone doesn’t have a monopoly on great ideas. The more we are exposed to different ideas the wiser we become. We expect all political parties to be responsible and not to engage in scandalous and libelous propaganda if given an opportunity to ventilate their plans and strategies on the people’s radio station, DBS.

Since last week Thursday I began hearing Q95 playing DLP ad for the convention, which means they had more than enough time to announce they would be carrying it live so we could plan ourselves accordingly. They know very well that Sundays at 6pm, q95 has a lot of people tuned in to Angello’s program. In my case I rushed to be home so I could listen to Angelo , only to find out it was our enemy q95 went to bed with. All these people talking as if Q95 belong to the opposition must be mad. What they must do is pay for time on Q95, it is a business they have bills to pay. The opposition talkers contributes not one cent to Q but they vex because the CEO decided to take DLP money.

To me the rally is of national concern. I would even urge UWP supporters and UWP reps of constituencies to go to that rally. listen to what the governemtn reps are saying and planning. It is everyone’s interest. Nothing wrong if Q broadcast it. We are too small minded and ignorant. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Open your heads and hearts and se what each side is doing. how else can there be any progress and or unity.

Dominicans have to become Open Minded. Q95 is a private business, not owned by the UWP. If Dominicans have anything to say, they should force DBS radio to give the opposition equal rights on DBS as it belong to all Dominicans.
Q95 have money to make, and simply can’t refuse to air DLP program, if DLP comes to buy a service..Would it be justifiable for a Baker to not sell Bread to a Labour right, simply for being a Labour Right?
Dominicans must know where they stand and regardless of How much Money DLP spend on Q95, keep focused on the real issues and banish that corrupt regime in the polls. Denounce their illicit practices.
.Q95 must play game to stay in business, don’t get too emotional, business must go on..Vote for progress !!

That’s good Q. Sadly in Dominica we have become so polarized politically. GIS is a government entity. It is supported by the tax payers of Dominica (not labour nor UWP supporters only). Yet GIS is purely government propaganda. Why is GIS not funded by the DLP the richest entity in Dominica? (with a budget bigger than the public service). Marpin 2k4 which is partly owed by the state (subject to correction) is purely DLP propaganda. Marpin 2k4 subscribers are both DLP and UWP supporters. The two balanced media outlets are DNO and Q. Keep up guys you show this DLP how things should be done. Hold your heads up high.

Skerrit told hid supporters to read his lips, Austie know what he is talking about anf that is he and skettit and the others cause q95 CEO/Manger to get rid of Angrlo becsuse he was exposing too much of their corruption, and opening too many people’s eyes, two weeks mo Angelo, the say way the CEO came OUT talking about the skerrit rally air time, to you mr CEO, did you fire Angelo to silence him, no wonder all of a sudden Matt is on the defense, disconnecting calls, playing smart pretending not to be the one. So you think DLP going to give UWP time on the “Nation Station” now? Keep dreaming! Q95 was the last bastion of the resistance but now it just proved that you can do anything in Dominica if you have the money. You think Kairi would ever carry a UWP rally? I know you’re in it for the money, Mr. G but a lot of people stand on principles and that was a hard one.
So now the Q95 listenership can be expected to be bombarded by the political vitriol of the DLP while being denied access to the Nation Station and Kairi. Thank you so much Mr. G. At least now we know you put money over country.
These guys don’t even invite your station to their press conferences! But maybe that might change now.
    So disappointed with Q!!!

What world are we as Dom- inican living in ?, this is a democratic country, Q95 is a trend setter Q 95 is the real nation station, they call it as they see it come on people wake up and stop making us Dominicans over seas look stupid, those negative comments are mostly coming from the people who has a closed mind , and has never travel over seas, come on people wake up and smell the coffee , wise up and leave the Q alone.

    May 8, 2017

Q95 is a private business entity and I expect them to take business from anyone. However, I can see a trend in recent times that has me scared for press freedom in DOMINICA. Here is what I noticed: 1. Tony and Skerrit threatened to Sue q95, 2. Soon after the law suit Angelo, who is also part of it, has not been heard on Q:3. DLP convention was carried live by q95; 4. During the rally housing Minister Austrie said, ” we have taken Q95 from them” and q95 is yet to clear the air. In fact Matt said “q95 has not been sold” as if to suggest that a deal is out but has not been finalized. Whatever be the case, I will no longer listen to Q95 as I once did because their actions have me to believe that it is just a matter of time before they get like Kaire.

I get the feeling UWP supporters thought the radio station is owned by their party. Despite what you believe, Sheridan’s favourite colour is neither red nor blue, it is GREEN. The man has a business to run and unlike running a government, the most important question he has to consider is, how much money he made for the year.

So you silly UWP supporter can beat up yourselves as much as you want. Sheridan is in this to make money, and he will take it from whomever is prepared to pay.

. . . And this is business all around and all over. Q95 would be unfair to refuse the DLP airing and unfair to their business. They would also be foolish to refuse business. Would any other business refuse?
For business purposes, they embraced the opportunity to be paid; to make some money. It was in their financial interest that they did so. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Who in their right mind would refuse business? Who in their right mind would object to that?

God knows more than you do, more than your limited mind could ever fathom. He does not think as you. He knows that D/cans are not suffering from want, that they should be happy and satisfied with what they have.
God also knows nationals in bygone years did not have it as good as those of today. He knows/hears that some of you are exaggerating the situation in Dominica and blowing it out of proportion by crying down your government and what the PM has done, is doing for the country and nationals, especially those in need. He knows, too, that some of you are ungrateful.
God also knows the wickedness of the heart and who is wicked, based on their comments as we read.
God help those who help themselves. He also knows that people should help themselves and embrace opportunities to help themselves. Therefore, cease calling the Holy Name of God in vain in your comment which bear no love whatsoever for God and for others. A punishment is awaiting those who hate.

It depends what the opposition Parties have to say which may benefit everyone, not only a segment of society as their supporters.
Some of them need to learn communication skills and how to relay their information/message across.
It would be foolish to go on a government-owned and operated Radio Station and make nasty comments against the government. Which government would allow that and tolerate it?
