Regional media association officially recognizes DCMA

Garvin Richards is President of the DCMA

The Dominica Media and Communications Association (DMCA) has announced that it has been officially recognized by the Association of Caribbean MediaWorkers (ACM) as the body to represent media professionals on the island.

The DMCA’s application to the ACM was accepted when the association met this past weekend.

ACM informed the DMCA of their decision late Tuesday.

According to the letter addressed to DMCA’s President Garvin Richards, after careful consideration of submitted documents, the ACM “determined that your association has satisfied all requirements for full membership status within the ACM”.

The letter also adds that the DMCA will have the full rights and privileges of member associations “effective immediately”.

Richards, other members of the executive and senior members of the association have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to get to this point.

“Since its inception, the DMCA has worked tirelessly to fulfill all the requirements necessary for membership, including the drafting of the constitution. Many may have thought that the association was inactive, but members, especially the executive, were working behind the scenes to ensure that everything was done accurately and on time. And then it was a matter of waiting on the approval before moving forward. Now, finally, this one hurdle has been overcome,” he said.

Richards went on to thank all who contributed to this process adding, “We extend our gratitude to the Association of Caribbean Media Workers for seeing our potential and recognizing that our aim has always been to provide ALL media professionals in Dominica with a voice and avenues to become better at what they do.”

Media workers on the island came together in August 2017, to form an association to represent their interests on the island in the absence of a functioning body.

DCMA believes in supporting the government. It is not an advocate of independent or investigative journalism.

There is an urgent need for in depth, unbiased journalism in Dominica. Most of the media houses are compromised by the corrupt regime. What we get from many local journalists and the electronic and social media is mostly disinformation., one-sided and heavily polluted. We need a cadre of well-trained, articulate, nonpartisan investigative journalists. We need news media that are not influenced by any political parties or their organs. There are three branches of government, the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary . The media is next in line. Allowing the ruling political party or any other parties to influence the news is rendering the media useless. Be always independent.

Before I say anything let me take some time to thank, congratulate and welcome Mr. Angelo Alleyne back on the airways of Q95. Since his sabbatical Dominica suffered immensely because there was not a real media house or real journalist to keep us informed. I thank Matt and Q95 for the little that they did to keep us informed but truly, Angelo was missing in battle. I cannot wait for Friday at 6PM,to be glued to Q95 again. As of today I try to do everything I would have done on a Friday evening, just to make sure I go to School on Friday at 6PM.
Concerning the subject matter above I say boldly that Dominica has NO damn media. What we have is nothing more than an extension of the propaganda machinery of Skerrit. They are not informed and it is impossible for them to keep us informed. Honestly speaking Dominicans know more about America and Trump than they know about Dominica simply because of the US media that keep us informed. We perish here for lack of information.

Boy see the makakwii we have in Dominica nou boy. Garvin what media you talking about? Are you not ashamed of yourself and your crew? Do you watch TV my boy? Do you watch CNN, ABC, Fox , NBC to see what media and journalism should look like? Dominica is in the mess that we in because we don’t have journalists and media house. What we have is a bunch of unpopular , unknown, un recorgnized entertainers. To see how bad you all are one just has to go to the airport today to the Skerrit motorcade, and see how many of you will ask Skerrit one question about the BLACKLISTING of Dominica that was is out. They will go there drink a few beers and call Skerrit Doctor and that’s about it. But if we had media in Dominica the first question they would ask Skerrit is, how is that St. Vincent is not blacklisted and how they paying for their international airport since they not selling passports. But the guys that acting like kids that got a box of toys to play with will not ask Skerrit anything

I most definitely agree with most of your comment. I clearly detect your frustration with the garbage of what pass as journalism in Dominica. However, CNN, ABC, NBC and especially Fox are poor examples of what journalism should be. These media conglomerates hire partisan talking heads to mostly bloviate about trivialities. Fox news is not genuine news, it’s just a propaganda right wing tool. ALJAZEERA reports real news. Its journalists ask the piercing questions.
Dominica is light years behind in most things. Skerrit has fiercely prevented the country from deviating into modernity. Keeping the media loyal to him and his regime, keeping his sheep-like supporters uninformed, misinformed and brainwashed is to his advantage although detrimental to the country.
These four things are prevented Dominica from realizing its real potential : GREED, SELFISHNESS, JEALOUSY and IGNORANCE.

This is nothing but a mouthpiece of Roosevelt Skerrit. There are no independent investigative journalist left in Dominica who are not afraid to disclose the unvarnished truth. Love him or hate him, welcome back Angelo Allen.

    Wait a minute….

I wonder if the ACM really investigated this group before accepting them. It’s nothing but a Labour Party organization.
