Reject Sunday as ordinary working day – DAEC

Below is a statement by the President of the Dominica Association of Evangelical Churches (DAEC), Bill Daniel, on the proposal to make Sunday a normal working day.

For the last few weeks I have listened with interest to the comments made by persons on the media regarding a proposal coming from the DAIC proposing that legislation be put in place to declare Sunday a normal working day in Dominica.

Let me state most emphatically that the Dominica Association Evangelical Churches (DAEC) recognizes that in any society there are establishments within the business community that by the nature of services they provide, must work on Sundays.

Sunday however, is recognized by most Dominicans as their day of worship which is a biblical requirement. During this day of worship, believers go to church and offer cooperate worship to God on a day set aside for that purpose.

We in the Evangelical Community believe that Sunday as a day of rest, worship and family time is essential to the balance of life of the individual and to general balance within the Society.

Families and especially single parents are under tremendous challenges seeking to balance work, home and personal life. In their attempt to maintain this balance, the lack of time spent with family is minimal and as a result children and young people remain unsupervised which leads to a new set of challenges.

Sunday is the day chosen and set aside by most Dominicans for WORSHIP and PRAISE to God and should not be interfered with, rest and worship is ordained by God and all concerned are advised to be guided accordingly.

The proposal therefore to make Sunday a normal working day will undermine the family structure, the church and the society at large.

The DAEC therefore, is not in support of any change to make Sunday a normal working day and the perceived economic gain will never outweighing the spiritual and social loss that this change would bring to our nation.

I therefore call on all right thinking Dominicans and believers alike to reject the request from the DAIC and also call on the Government of Dominica to reject such a request and encourage everyone to work hard during the week but continue to use Sunday as their choice day of worship and Praise.

What happens to nurses, doctors and emergency service workers, who are believers but also work on Sunday? True believers knows that they can pay reverence to the Lord at anytime of day or night.

Why is it people who worship a certain God or have beliefs pertaining to their religion based on their religious books think that they have a right or authority to impose their beliefs when it comes to passing laws insisting that people obey their God.

Mr Daniel and his organization need to understand that the law being proposed is not denying them their right to celebrate their Sabbath and are free to do so, but to
insist that the law being proposed should
not be simply because of what he believes
based on his religion and what his God says, is ludicrous and absurd. What makes it more so is the statement quote “The proposal therefore to make Sunday a normal working day will undermine the family structure, the church and the society at large” that is BS and very laughable, there is no evidence to support this statement making it true

I’m not in any way implying that Mr Daniel and his organization do not have the right to express their feelings towards the proposed law,yes they have a right and also the right to believe what ever they want but to insist that a whole Nation must obey the God they believe in is absurd.

And you can believe it or not the Banks will not open on a Sunday for business. The great United States, The Banks does not operate on a Sunday so I agree with the DAEC that we should not fall for the UnGodly act. You must worship God every day but Sunday is our most honourable day of worship to God the Ceator. May God Bless The People and The Commonwealth of Dominica. I live abroad.

The Sabbath was a ‘sign’ between God and his people as Creator. This sign essentially meant that God’s people worshiped him as ‘Creator’.

For economic reasons, Sabbath keeping was changed from the last day to the first day of the week by the Church. While every day of the week should in fact be a day of worship, God chose a specific day as a special sign as a covenant that distinguished his people in that same way that he gave the rainbow, the dove (as the holy Spirit), water for baptism, the moon for night and the sun for day. The use of a specific day was for a specific reason.

As the children of God we will soon have to decide which God we worship: God the Creator or the man/power who made himself/itself ‘God on Earth’.

A sign is symbolic and can also be a mark. The beast is on earth, dwelling among us. One day soon we will have to choose whose mark/sign we are going for. That of the God Creator or Man God on Earth.

It will boil down to what you choose to believe EVEN as a Christian. Your choice of day of worship, that of the Creator or that of the Counterfeit is a question of belief and faith… it will be in your minds.

You will soon have to choose what belief you accept and receive. Whose mark/sign to choose. Who to worship. The Creator or the Counterfeit on Earth.

At this point, don’t expect this to make any sense. Why? Because it is a matter of ‘belief’, loyalty and obedience. What will you do? Stick to tradition or obey the laws of God the Creator? God’s people, those who obey his commands will be his bride, his true church. NOT a denomination.

The Antichrist is illusive. He is a counterfeit and only when the time is right will he show his true face.

You will very well see, that very soon, in the name of peace, family unity and overall good of mankind, that Man made Sabbath day of worship shall become mandatory. Choosing not to observe that day will come with its penalties.

Please, it is not about who has eyes let them see and who has ears let them hear as mentioned in your closing statement We as humans have this two organs given to us and we a still being mislead by religion.

It is about time people wake up removing the veil which been put on them by religion, where is our minds to think and not just accepting beliefs without finding where they come from. I always proclaim if you do not use your mind someone else will use it for you. Always remember religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.

To depend on your own mental faculties and confront the illusions of this world is allowing yourself to remain in darkness.

The mind can be treacherous often independent of us, hence why most times we are unable to control our own thoughts. Do you really believe that people can simply rely on ‘thinking’ to discern the powers of darkness of this world when they are the brightest stars lighting it up with words of ‘justice, freedom and peace’?

The spirit of discernment to see and hear these things is sent through the grace of God to His people throughout the entire world. To say who they are would be playing the great judge, which I’m not.

It’s one of two things, to ‘think’ and trust your own understanding or to allow yourself to be guided by the spirit of God through prayer for the discernment to see and hear. As true christians we should know the answer.

I honestly thought people would be more receptive to the idea. I understand that the cultural changes in attitude toward Sunday work can create great problem however it’s a great change for economic development.

Especially when we’re focusing on capitalizing on our tourism.

I believe if they want to introduce a law to have Sunday as a day of work then an Act should be passed in accordance with the law that prohibits employers from discriminating against individuals because of their religion in hiring, firing and other terms and conditions of employment.

It all again stems down to the fear for change in Dominica… and then we hear the never-ending complaints of Dominica’s development.

What makes you think in making Sunday a normal working day will bring more money to the country? People in this country are so laid back, not even on a regular week day they want to work much less for a Sunday. You go to the registry for instance for a birth certificate and they move like slugs. LEAVE PEOPLE’S SUNDAYS FOR THEM TO GO TO CHURCH AND REST. You people never think right.

Good Morning, First thing Pastor Daniels your statement that Sunday was set apart by God as a day of worship is false and I say this on the authority of God’s word. I for one do not have a stance on whether or not sunday should be declared an official working day, what I do know is that sunday is not kept holy as your assertions go, which is the biggest sporting day in Dominica? which is the day that the rum shops are filled to capacity? is it only the people who worship on the true Sabbath of the Bible ( Saturday) who go to their gardens and do their house work?
Sunday has never been regarded in Dominica as a day set apart by God for holy use, it has always been a day people run to mass or service and when that is done they do whatever they feel like doing, It may be your person openion as you keep refering to “I” and “My” in a statement that is suposed to be representative of an organization, please do not pretent to speak for God, express your personal openion like all of us has the right to do but please dont sonfuse the issue by annointing sunday the holy day set apart by God because somehow I will give you the benefits of the doubt to believe that you know better, but what you are involved with now serves your financial causes alittle better.
In an open society ( not a dictatorship) the government does not get to decide which day is holy and set apart, that is reserved for the beliefs and consciences of the members of that society, so if is ok to be jumping up in the streets in a fete on sunday, if it is ok to be playing cricket and footbal on sunday, if it is ok to corrouse in your rum shops on sunday, I say by all means get to work and make the place more productive.

      December 19, 2011

I have to agree with you bro. Politicians should not decide what day citizens should worship. Every day is a normal working day. Let the elders of each religious sect decide what day is their day of worship. As long as they are not interfereing with each other’s belief they can worship any day, all day and twice on sunday.

    December 19, 2011

I agree with the pastor that there must be a day set aside for worship however the bible necer said it was to be a sunday. Having said this i grew up like a lot of ominicans in a simgle parent household abd sunday hace always been the day when the entire family put aside their different schudule and spend time together. Also who ever said that the calendar we humans use today was the same one with same date and timing that God used? We are all speculating but the truth of the matteris only God knows which day he meant to be the sventh day. This iswhy i think it is wise to keep Sunday open asvthe official day for worship in Dominica seeing that most people attend church on a Sunday.

  16. Wow
    December 19, 2011

Is Saturday a regular day of work in Dominica? What about in the rest of the world. How do Saturday sabbath worshipers deal with it. It does not matter if Sunday becomes a regular day of work because people have a choice not to work on that day the same way that Sabbath keepers will not work on Friday evenings and on Saturdays. Go to NYC and elsewhere and see of you will fine business of the real Jews open on the Sabbath; but they are open on Sundays.

So the “no business on Sunday” cry is one biased against Saturday worshipers on favor of dominant Western Christian domination.

I think it is fine to make Sunday a day of regular work as long as the same legislation protects Sunday worshipers from working on that day because of their faith, in the same way that Sabbath keepers on Saturday do not work (I Hope the Saturday Sabbath keepers are protected by law, and if not, they should be as well).

People have a choice to go to church or to work. Many do not go to church already, and legislation is not discriminating against them; but those who are already going should be protected by the law so they do not lose their jobs because they want to worship.

We need a day of rest. Besides, how much business is there going to be on a Sunday? Do we have the population to have business flowing on Sundays. At times you walk around and you hardly see anyone at certain stores. People buy more food “prepared and groceries” and supermarkets and small grocery shops are available around the clock. Give us a break and let us enjoy Sundays as we do. We can choose to go to Church, beach, visit friends and relatives, or the likes. I am Dominica!

sunday is the first day of the working week an has always beenwe observed sunday instead of saturday because the catholic church in the council of laodicea 364 ad transfered the soleminity from saturday to sunday the are only 8 verse in the bible that refer to sunday first day of the week none of which mentoin thet gods law was or could be change . if there is no spiritual reference by what authority was the sabbath transferred who change the sabbath?wasnt the sabbath made for men?catholicism begins with constantine in the 8 century the pope is the vicar of hell the word vatican vatis means profetic or divine and can means serpant or snake these two words combine make the profetic or made divine serpant to translate divine serpant into every day english would mean a spititual serpent that is worship as god so the vatican is the place of the devil the crest of the vatican is a serpent dragon revelation 12 9 sunday is an institution of the roman catholic church and those who observed the day observed a commandment of the catholic churchthis is coming from priest brady in an address reported in the elizabeth nj news march 18 1903

Dominica is no exception in having jobs that require people to work on Sundays but it is not a regular working day. Before you open your mouth and bray enlighten yourself on this issue. How economically viable are we to open on Sundays? All businesses are complaining that business is slow, profits are dwindling, what difference is working on Sunday going to make? I was in Bridgetown recently on a Sunday and almost everywhere was closed and they are more economically viable than we are.

What really bother me about this worship on Sunday is that the Evangelicals proclaim that it was ordained by God. That’s not quite true. The only day that was ordained by our Creator was the seventh day. There is not one text in the Holy scriptures that places holiness on Sunday. That came from Rome and we all follow it not because it is Biblical but because most of us were forced to attend church service on Sunday. With that being said I would hope and pray that the Gov’t does not legislate any laws forcing people to attend church on any particular day. That has to be between man and his GOD.

So what! whasts the point did Gods ask us to keep it or did he command the Jews? am sure the only place you can go to try prove that are the old testament scriptures which are written history of the Jew religion and not instructions for Christians. Where there Christians under the Old Testament? NO. They were not followers of Christ. But the were of the Law. Christians follow a new rule brought to them by Christ. Col 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Col 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
Col 2:18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

Its hard when people have to deviate from their customs (traditions)but the question is because I was raise to believe one thing does that make it right? every so many generations the demographic balance of society change starting with the villiage then the family, now is it for the better? maybe not but life goes on. If we go back in history, the only day of rest there was is only biblical day of rest which is commonly known as Saturday and that was changed by the christians (Roman Catholic church, I believe back then there was ressentment and maybe demonstrations but here we are thousands of years later still do their worship on saturdays while others go to work. What makes Sunday any defferent, the world is changing like it or not. Mostly all businesses in America and other contries work on Sundays and all churches open also and thats not stoping them from going to worship. The family structure is being undermined for years now by the world leaders you are awear of that, but the silence of the evangelical churches of greater matters affecting our Island is intriguing.

It’s time we start to adjust to change, the big fuss of Sunday being a day of worship is to the Christians, I can understand that, hey! it’s there belief. But if is to worship God you don’t need Sunday, you worship God as often as the others like to sewo. God knows all things and he knows what Dominica needs, we are not asking for it, wisdom, knowledge, understanding and love.we must prepare to be flexible in this times. It is not our grand mama days, it is a global village.

I agree with what the pastor said about having the biblical day of worship. My disagreement with him is where he says that “Sunday however, is recognized by most Dominicans as their day of worship which is a biblical requirement”. This is untrue. Sunday is not and has never been the biblical requirement for rest and worship. The Biblical requirement is THE 7th day of the week. The last time i checked the calendar, the 7th day of the week is Saturday. By the way, be honest Mr. Pastor, your biggest concern is not the effect of sunday work on the family, your biggest concern is whether this will affect the offering bowl.

the real issue here would be a lost in the collection basket for the pastors or priests….why not work on sunday? we need money…Is the church or jesus paying our rent? no! we have to work for money to do that. open all the stores on sunday….let our economy flourish.

“Families and especially single parents are under tremendous challenges seeking to balance work, home and personal life. In their attempt to maintain this balance, the lack of time spent with family is minimal and as a result children and young people remain unsupervised which leads to a new set of challenges.”

True, I do agree with this.

“The proposal therefore to make Sunday a normal working day will undermine the family structure, the church and the society at large.”

What the HELL are you talking about? So all of a sudden working on Sundays will destroy families?

“The DAEC therefore, is not in support of any change to make Sunday a normal working day and the perceived economic gain will never outweighing the spiritual and social loss that this change would bring to our nation.”

How will being spiritual benefit the nation?

I respect your opinion greatly, you must understand that, and I do understand why you/he has said what you/he have/has said. HOWEVER there are somethings that I believe cannot be stopped just because it is Sunday. You could get a tremendous amount of work done on Saturday, and the weekend in general you know!

Dear Bill, I really don’t see the problem. There are other Christians in Dominica who choose to rest and worship on Saturdays and… guess what: Saturday has long been and will apparently remain an ordinary working day. Nobody makes a fuss. Life goes on. The seventh day people simply take their day off from work to attend church etc; so why can’t the Sunday people simply do the same? Everyone should be allowed to worship freely in accordance with their beliefs. The real problem would be if the government enacted legislation REQUIRING people, on pain of… whatever, to work on their chosen day of rest and worship. That would open the door to a greater tide of evil–intolerance, polarization of society, and even persecution.

Don’t you see the population of persons who go to church on a Sunday is much more that those that go on Saturday. What will it be if you have all these people taking off on a Sunday? It would lead to no work at all. Go BILL I’m behind you 200%. If the government go along with that then they will see how much our country will deteriorate economically. People need to respect God and if we don’t then we won’t see good… Dominica is a blessed nation; God has protected us from so many dangers because we acknowledge him. If we decide to change that, then things will definitely not work out right for us, I can assure Dominicans of that fact. PLEASE OBEY GOD!!!! He has ordained that man should work for sixth days and on the seventh day rest. He rested so who are we to not do the same!!!!! What is this world really coming eh; I believe the end is closer than we think!.

You are obviously content to look at the issue from one side of the coin.

Dominicans did not choose Sunday as a Day of worship, it was forced on us with the gun by the Jesuits, in the name of Isabella of Spain, the Kalinago people were not Sunday worshippers, as they worshipped the Great Spirit, by never seeking to own the earth, was Earth was mother, and Sky was Father, they worshipped every day. African people had a similar religious background, and actually worshipped on the seventh Day of the week, before Rome penetrated Africa. Since the bible prophecies that all things have to return the way The Creator intended a seven day cycle, with the Seventh day of the week as the Sabbath to the Lord our God and Creator, then the evangelical alliance would be best suited to proclaim the people return to the ways of God by keeping the Seventh day Sabbath HOly.

What foolishness you talking there? Just because Catholics operated like that does not mean that all Christians worshiping on Sunday do so in ignorance, some do it through biblical example and authority as Christians only Jews kept Sabbath days, Saturdays.

The Question now to you is, was your Christ a Jew? and if so is he your example? and if he is your example what other things that e did are you willing to reject? The love he showed for others? the way he said we should live? by making that statement you are rejecting the very Christ that you claim as your Saviour, because you are saying to him in that instance he was wrong

abroad, did GOD ask u to worship him on sunday?I know he said to worship him in spirit and in truth,he also said six days to work and the 7th is the SABBATH.Unless we choose the the 7th day as the sabbath we would be worshipping in vain and not truth.

Yes Saturday is the Sabbath and has always been. So what! whast’s the point did Gods ask us to keep it or did he command the Jews? am sure the only place you can go to try prove that are the old testament scriptures which are written history of the Jew religion and not instructions for Christians.
