Remembering the Morne Prosper tragedy

Curious spectators looking over the cliff on the Morne Prosper road where the accident occurred. (New Chronicle, 24 May 1975)

Today over three decades ago Dominica suffered its worst road tragedy when a truck plunged over a precipice in Morne Prosper.

On 21 May 1975, an overloaded passenger truck departed from village with some 35 pilgrims aboard, bound for a Pentecostal “Christ is the Answer” crusade at Windsor Park in Roseau. Minutes later it got out of control on the hill before a sharp bend on the Morne Prosper road and shot over a precipice.

Twenty eight men, women and children were hurled to their deaths.

Throughout the night and the next day, police, firemen, Defence Force personnel and volunteers searched for victims among trees and branches on the cliff face. Bodies were loaded onto trucks and taken to the Red Cross Headquarters on Federation Drive, Goodwill, where they were laid out for identification and preparation for burial.

It must be remembered that in those days there were no funeral homes and burials had to take place within 24 hours of death, if not earlier. Prisoners worked feverishly all day to make enough coffins out of whatever wood was available.

The following afternoon on 22 May, two huge funerals were held in Roseau, one at the Roman Catholic Cathedral and the other at the Pentecostal Church.

Individual graves could not be dug in time so excavating machines dug out two long trenches, one in the public cemetery and the other in the Catholic cemetery, to lay the coffins and then covered them all together.

One of the survivors is often seen in Roseau today asking for assistance; he is tall, has one leg, wears locks and walks with crutches.

As many as nine members of the Deschamps family died on that night, including the truck driver, Lennox. The list of victims as published in the press at the time was as follows:

Magdalene Deschamps
Ivinia Deschamps
Paulina Deschamps
Everad Deschamps
Claudia Deschamps
Cynthia Deschamps
Lennox Deschamps
Isaline Deschamps
Orius Deschamps

:( I was 14 years old and lived in Goodwill, Roseau. It was a very sad day. I went and peeped throught the window at the Red Cross and could not sleep for days after seeing so many bodies. Sleep on in christ. He will wake you up one day. Surviving families find peace in our Lord and Savoir Jesus Christ

My parents were Dominican, and I consider myself to be a fellow Dominican. My heart goes out to all the families for their loss. I am disappointed to hear that the road was never fixed – and perhaps DNO publishing the events of the tragedy may open the hearts of all Dominicans as to finding a way to sort this outstanding matter out.

My grandmother Madeline Timothy (Goodwill) was married to a John Timothy and I noticed their is a Agatha, Mona and Reginald Timothy and I am wondering if they are my family – because if they are I would have been too young to understand the events and mourn the loss of them and all the others that were injured or passed as a result of the tragedy.

Keep the love flowing always – Dominicans let us not to forget how hospitable, loving and helpful we are – let us reach out to each other especially at this difficult time.

    My love to you all

I’m a surving child of one of the victims of the tragedy of the Morne Prosper accident, and I don’t think it’s appropriate to have the bodies so exposed, and even though I did not know my mom it still hurts to see them like this. Also besides my mom 5 of my aunts are lying there I don’t think this is honoring them.

Thank you DNO for reminding the world of this tragic accident. I have vivid memories of that night. The small community on the mountain has rebounded well. After many years, it was under the UWP that a descent memorial was erected at the site. Perhaps because the then UWP Parl. Rep –Norris Charles lost his sister in this accident. Mr. Charles worked closely with the Morne Prosper village council, to erect the simple memorial. Sadly, due to the present condition of our main road and village roads –god forbid-another accident could occur at the same place as the present Parl. Rep has completely abandoned the people of Morne Prosper- until the next general elections are called. May th soul of all who perished in this horrible accident RIP.

It’s been so long living with this. Not only a memory.. but a personal experience. Knowing you lost someone of such importance in your life and have to relive it year after year. It’s hard.. and it may seem simple to let go off. But it’s only after going through it yourself, you get the actual idea of how it really works.

To those who have their parents i urge you… Do not take them being part of your life lightly. Cause the moment their gone, you begin asking what if… but it’d have already been over.

Sympathy to all those who lost someone special in this horrific event. Their souls are resting safely…

I was back home then just waiting to leave for England. On the following day,of my forthcoming departure I heard the news and hearing it now still saddens me.For this reason I Ask all Dominicans to join in my Prayer.

Dear God,please accept this apology from all my fellow Dominicans for we still don’t know what have we done wrong. We have always been your humble servants serving nature and keeping it green unlike our other brothers.

It is acceptable that sacrifices has to be done.
The path that they have chosen are smooth and unwindy.

We ask you Lord please guide all your children towards the perfect light and shine this same light onto the living things so we can grow with no fear and hate to others.

Help those who are in struggles with themselves and give compassion to their enemies. For this is the message of our lord.

    Amen
    Forever ever Grateful Lord.

And 37 years later, the Morne Prosper road is still one of the worst roads in Dominica, with endless pot holes, no guard rail whatsoever, no lights and very narrow.
So, what have we learned in terms of road safety I ask? Absolutely nothing. If any road in Dominica needs a serious upgrade, it is the Morne Prosper road.

    • Just saying
      May 21, 2012

you mean to say neither Pj’s, Mamo or Edo’s administration foun dit fitting to improve on the roads? We can then agree that It is all left to Skero’s government to work on infrastructure that should have been done about 37 years ago.

THE MEMORIAL HAS MORE NAMES THAN THOSE DNO MENTIONED. WHY IS THAT??

    • Reader
      May 21, 2012

Valid point. But I think that there are more names on the memorial than in the report because several died later as a result of their wounds than on the night itself.

The report seems to give the names who died on the night and the memorial gives all those who died overall as well as those who survived.

My mom was just recently telling me the story – she was a young girl when it happened but she remembers it very well. It gives her chills to this day.

No matter how long ago this was, it still brings a sense of sadness. Although I was just one year old at the time, I grew up hearing about this tragedy. So sad.

Just wondering, how many persons survived that accident, and how many of these survivors are still with us today?

I lost 16 members of my family in the accident and the pictures provide some comfort as children we were overlooked and not allowed to witness or pay our respect. For me the pictures have filled a void. Thank you DNO!!

I remember that tragedy – as a 10 year old then, it was something curious then to me, but the gravity of the accident eventually set in and i was moved. It is very very sad indeed. May their souls all Rest in Peace.

Looking at that current-day photo,I am obliged to ask – why aren’t there guard rails on that curb? Don’t they think this type of tragedy could revisit itself upon this community? He who fails to learn the lessons of history or the mistakes of his predecessors is condemned to repeat them.

What a day that was! I was still a kid but remember quite clearly. The sad songs on radio, the calling up of the DDF Members-my dad being one of them- to aid in the rescue operations and the prayers for the dead and rescuers. Hopefully we will never have to live through this again as a nation. May they continue to RIP.
