Roseau gets extensive cleanup

A bin in Roseau

The Roseau City Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism & Culture and the Ministry of Environment, Climate Resilience, Disaster Management & Urban Renewal is currently undertaking an extensive cleanup of Roseau.

This project is an expansion of the work done post-Maria to clean up the city and restore public and private sector activity in Roseau.

Phase one of the clean-up is focused primarily on clearance of abandoned lots, drains and culverts, and derelict vehicles within the city.

This is expected to improve health and safety, help mitigate against flooding risks, and enhance the aesthetics of the city. This ongoing clean-up complements the ongoing works to dredge the Roseau River and the Roseau Enhancement project.

The Roseau City Council is in the process of contacting the owners of vacant lots and abandoned properties to discuss the maintenance and utilization of available lots.

Phase two includes the installation of fifty (50) 45g litter bins around the city of Roseau. The bins have been placed at strategic high traffic areas to curb indiscriminate dumping of litter around the city. The public is urged to utilize the bins for disposal of litter (small consumable items such as styrofoam, plastics, paper, bottles etc). Residential and Commercial waste should not be disposed of in the litter bins.

Additionally, the Government and the Roseau City Council are currently rolling out plans for improved waste management, signage, improved sidewalks and drainage, and the establishment of green spaces within the city of Roseau.

It is expected that these improvements will enhance the experience for cruise and stayover visitors to Roseau and benefit all locals who traverse the city on a daily basis.

The general public is urged to cooperate with the various agencies during this ongoing project.

I hope these trash cans are cleaned frequently otherwise the odorous fumes from the dirty bins will be a worse problem than the trash itself. Keep the island clean and smelling fresh.

All these so called clean up campaigns are all well and good. But we need to develop a culture of cleanliness in Dominica. Where citizens face penalties for trashing and unlawful indicriminate dumping. Commercial garbage should also be legislated separate from household with diferent collection disposal/collection practices. And FINES for failimg for failure to follow. Also ownwers of derilic properties and abandoned lots must face fines until they clean up their act.

If we are going to live up to the moniker of “Nature Island” , cleanliness must become a way of life.

I’m also aware that politics trumps everthing here in Dominica. That government is more concerned of how enforcing a law or legislation will affect their popularity on ballot day. But I’m one who believes that government job is making Dominica better for this and future generations of citizens – even if certain actions may not be the most popular thing to do. But it’s the RIGHT thing to do.

    God bless us all.

The collaboration of the Ministries of Tourism and Culture, Environment, Climate Resilience, Disaster and Urban Renewal in their effort of massive clean up of the City of Roseau must be recognized as the way to go. However, I do believe what is needed is a cultural transformation, which must begin in our schools.
As the saying goes, “Rome was not build in a day”. I have no doubt that the combination of these Ministries will motivate us as a Nation to become better Stewards of the Gifts that we have been blessed with. Let the discussion continue as the attempt is being made to overcome the challenges we face to develop as a small Nation.

Good job! Please respect the environment and take pride in keeping Roseau tidy and clean. Visitors get disrespectful thoughts about Dominicans when litter and waste is blowing around everywhere.

Monetary fines should be imposed on those who litter and the money collected from fines can be used to purchase trash bins and pay for clean-up. If someone chooses to litter let them pay for the clean up. If the government has to clean up an abandoned lot the owner of the lot should pay the government for cleaning the lot.

Great move! Can we ban galvanize fences? They are unsightly and are missiles during storms. Let us encourage hedges instead of galvanize. After all, we are the Nature Isle!!!

The only thing that will ultimately work is when those who break the law are punished. Time to enforce the Litter Act!
