Insurance company, Sagicor Life Inc., has presented twelve scholarships to six high school and six college students at a total value of $9,000.00 as assistance towards their academic journey.

On Friday September 8th 2017, at Sagicor’s office in Roseau, Jaielle Laurent, Khaleed Williams, Lujuan Esprit,Jermale Esprit, Shadila Leblanc, and Dwight Pinard have each received $500 for secondary school education while Turrell Christmas, Jaide Laurent, Kande Charles, Sandrin Elizee, Faith Daisy, and Jeron Morancie were awarded $1,000 for expenses at college.

Brenton Hillaire, Agency Manager for Sagicor Life Dominica, said that this presentation served as a way of giving back to the policy holders of the insurance company.

“Sagicor is committed to our clients, and this is a very effective way for us to give back to you the clients whilst also benefiting your children whom we believe will be future policy holders with Sagicor, and also contributing to the education system of Dominica,” he said.

He encouraged the parents of the recipients to push and support their children while being the best that they can be for them.

“We see what is happening in society and this really shows us that we need to play a bigger part in their upbringing,” he stated.

Meanwhile Principal Representative of Sagicor in Dominica, Sheryl Rolle, said that as policy holders, the parents of the recipients have paved the way for their children to receive such assistance.

“First of all I want to congratulate the parents…if you did not believe in protecting your family, you would not be here today receiving anything…it is as a result of you being a policy holder of Sagicor and making provisions for your children in case you are not around to provide for them financially, that is the reason why you are here today,” she said.

She charged the students with the task of keeping education as the key to success in all their endeavors as it helps to “remove yourselves from most challenges that you will encompass.”

One of the recipients, Jaide Laurent, who majors in Biology and Mathematics at the Dominica State College is studying to become a neonatologist (Doctor specializing in medical care of ill or premature newborn babies) and she sees this sponsorship as a great help.

“That will help in purchasing books because books are very expensive at the college and in transportation to and from the college,” she said.

Laurent remarked that the distance one reaches in academic and personal success is based upon the level of determination in reaching those goals.

“Push to what you want to become, always do your best, and always have that person to support you and [who] will always be there for you,” she said.
