Salisbury residents display community spirit, repair main road

Residents hard at work on the project

The people of Salisbury recently got together to repair the  main village road which they say was in a deplorable condition.

The road has been in a serious state of disrepair for several months and according to residents numerous attempts to get the Ministry of Public Works to address the situation failed.

And so, according to a release from Salisbury MP, Opposition Leader, Hector John, villagers took matters in their own hands, got together to purchase materials while some made their tools and heavy equipments available for the project.

The release states that bus drivers, The Salisbury Enhancement Committee, contractors and others worked together to bring this community building initiative to  completion.

Snacks and refreshments provided by residents, states the release,  contributed towards the success of the undertaking.

Residents say the repairs will go a long in making the road safe for motorists and pedestrians.

They say the project also demonstrated that the community continues to display the true spirit of Koudmen (Self Help).

I have read with much interest the comments posted by all. This forces me to make this comment. The people of Salisbury have always been hard-working, progressive and together. It does not surprise me that they have banded together to repair the village roads. They pay their fair share of taxes just like the other present government supporters and deserve to be treated like Dominicans, fairly and justly. The fact that they had to make these repairs on their own without any help from the government just goes to prove that unless you vote for the PM in power, you will receive no help from the government. I wonder what happened to our freedom of choice. The government should be ashamed of themselves for being so transparent. The people of Salisbury are not asking for any handouts, just some assistance.
    Bawi ahead!

A similar project was done in Stockfarm a few weeks ago, it is time that folks come to realize that no one govt can do it all,self-reliance is the key to any form of development.

Well, well, well. Finally the people of Salisbury and more so the UWP supporters have displayed a sense of true community spirit; something they have done so well in the past. It must be noted however that the news did not say the initiative was that of their Parl. Rep. What it also missed was that the people of Salisbury heard the call of the Prime Minister, Hon. Rossevelt Skeritt, when the decision was taken by Cabinet to limit the Community day of service funding and replace it with an Island wide beautification campaign that would extend for not just one day but for years following. Mr. P.M the people of Salisbury proved you and the Government RIGHT AGAIN. Spags take note. Do not let the “DOOR” hit you on your way out – of Parliament – that is. BOOOOO !!!!!!

The People of Salisbury continue to demonstrate the importance of Building Community Together. Despite the lack of support from Central Government they came together and proved that they can achieve in Unity.

I hope that the people of Dominica take a page from the people of Salisbury and Build their Community together.

I also hope that the Government will be more proactive in responding to the basic needs of the people.

Two Thumbs Up to the People of Salisbury for taking up this great initiative..

@Smh You are so right. Village Road should be maintained by the community. It was obvious it was something that they good deal with . I really don’t see the big deal. Other comunities should follow ‘suit’. Too much dependency on government for things that should be a communtity effort.

Every Majour road project comes from project funds sorced from out of Dominica, where is the V A T money? going to red clinic or to Govt ministers who is always on overseas missions just to fatten their pocket.

For Anonymous and others who do not know the history of Salisbury concerning Feeder Roads.

During the 1960s and the 1970s, the people of Salisbury with their own money clubbed together and hired a caterpillar and roller, plus professional caterpillar and roller driver to build feeder roads in the Macousherie, Grand Labou, Gros Morne area and in the heights of Salisbury.

And they did it all from scratch. I was a minor and witnessed it all.

From the people coming to collect money from my family, to seeing the road being built with my very own eyes and climbing the mound of sand!

The village of Salisbury was built on Self Dependency.

It is a crying shame that this kind of attitude to life is dying in Dominica.

Dominica is a very, very rich country but we Dominicans are too blind to see it. We all want someone else top provide jobs for us.

Well done Salisbury and well done to all the other communities who are helping themselves.

For, if I help myself, my community is helped and if a community helps itself the country Dominica is helped.

    My two cents:

    1. Kudos to the people of Salisbury for coming together and taking up this project. Great job!!

    2. I support the current government (love de PM) but why did the matter have to be resolved by the Salisbury people using their own resources? Infrastructure development is clearly the role of central government. I am all for people helping themselves and not waiting on the gov’t but come guys. We can do better than that!

      July 12, 2012

The road they are working on is a simple village road, not a “main road”. Many communities across Dominica undertake similar projects on a regular basis.

Good job Salisbury people, keep it going… it is for your own benefit!

Labour should not even bother to send up a candidate to contest that constituency during the next election. Mr. John has just secured hie seat. He could take a good vacation during the campaign and he will still win.

Very smart move there Mr. John.

Were you in Dominica last election? is it only now that Spags have secured his seat? absolutely laughable…anyways thats ok we will still have our 18 seats…well actually 19!
