Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has made it clear that same sex marriages will not be accepted by his government, pointing out that “certain guiding principles” must be followed in that matter.
“I will make it clear that there is some things that this government will not accept and we will never allow for the state to recognize same sex marriage in our country,” he said on Monday. “If other countries want to do it, that’s a matter for them but there are certain guiding principles that we must follow.”
Local group, Minority Rights Dominica (MiriDom), has been calling on the government to take another look at buggery laws in the Sexual Offense Act of Dominica with a view to having them repealed.
According to the group the Act “discriminates against poeple because of their sexual preferences.”
“We are just asking that everybody be treated equally,” the group said.
The organization noted it has been awaiting word from the prime minister on the matter.
Skerrit said he is willing to meet with MiriDom to discuss issues, concerns and recommendation but, “I don’t think any one group should impose any views on any other group.”
He said a request was actually sent to meet with the group, but no response was received. “We are prepared to meet with MiriDom at any time,” he said. “We will seek to contact them again and arrange for the Minister for Social Services and myself to meet and discuss with them.”
The prime minister further stated that he is not aware of the police knocking on doors saying, “we heard you were involved in same sex and we come to arrest you.”
“This has never happened in Dominica and I don’t think that will be happening any time now or later,” he said.
I read these comments and I feel so ashamed to be associated with Dominica. So much hatred spoken by people claiming to be of God and the brainwashed followers who agree with them. I grew up in the Roman Catholic church but my life is certainly not dictated by every single word in the bible. I understand that people from all over the world may not share my religious beliefs or my lifestyle choices and that’s OK. I do not feel the need to condemn them to a fiery afterlife and I don’t feel the need to stop them from simple rights like the one that allows a spouse to be at the side of his/her loved one if they are hospitalized. I know I am flawed and I accept that.
I am Dominican but I cannot be like 95% of you on here spewing hate and ignorance.
The bible was written many centuries ago by the very few people in society who could read and write at the time. Those people happened to be the privileged few in power. This means they could have written anything in there that kept them in power and kept the downtrodden in their place. The moment you realize that is the moment the whole thing falls apart. Not long ago European settlers used the same book to justify the slave trade. It is amazing to believe that black people, for a time, were brainwashed into thinking that slavery was what God intended for them.
Since then we have come a long way as a people. Acceptance of our differences is what will break the chains of hate.
Your life is not dictated by every single word in the Bible
Of course many people would say that.
But if you do not believe it all how do you know what parts of the Bible to believe and what parts not to believe?
And if you decide not to be dictated to by the Bible – if you do not accept the Bible as the rule for your life – what ARE your terms of reference? Do you have ANOTHER code of behaviour? Is it OLDER than the Bible? Does it have MORE followers than the Bible?
It has been my own observation that those who accept the Bible as the inspired Word of God and sincerely TRY (nobody is perfect) to live by its precepts have a good life. By contrast those who are the most outspoken in their criticism of the Bible do not do so well.
The prophet Isaiah wrote:
“To the law and to the testimony: If they speak not according to this word it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20)

The passage of, “…For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord…” came to my mind. We could take heed from this passage, that as all genuine Christians know, God did not create homosexuals and lesbians, just as he did not create criminals/murderer. He created people, innocent babies. As they grew up into children and then adulthood, some followed the path of evil and make excuses why they have such a lifestyle, even stating that God created them in this manner.
These people and those who promote it, approve it and exalt it have ignored what is contained in Holy Scripture which is the Word of the Lord; not that of humanity.
This is a lesson to be learned for especially those who think that God is pleased with this intrinsic, evil behavior and lifestyle.
We do know how much it highly offends our God who created man and woman and for a relevant purpose. St. Paul wrote about this abomination. We also know that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for this abnormal practice.
Sadly so, this type of lifestyle has spread throughout the world to the West Indies, to Dominica with these people wanting to be recognized. It is of absolutely no benefit to the world whatsoever. Their supporters and themselves will go to the extreme of trying to get it legislated so that they could marry. Some have already succeeded.
Woe to all who are involved in this type of sexual behavior and are offending God. We know not when our patient God will rain down his fire and brimstones on the earth for immorality and increasing ones. As Our Lord said, ”It will come as a thief in the night”, just as the death of anyone.

Nobody is saying this is religious people forcing their views upon another.
The church has a responsibility to teach its people what acts are moral sins and discipline its members according church policy. But not every moral sin can be legislated against. Most of these things we must leave to the churches. The police have no way of knowing who is committing these sins or where. Unfortunately, the courts could not handle the work load, and the jails could not accommodate the prisoners.
However, homosexuality is in a class by itself because (a) it is a sin against nature (Romans 1:26,27) and it strikes at the very heart and core of the God given model and blueprint for marriage (Genesis 2:23,24) (Matthew 19:4-6). Marriage is the cornerstone of civilization. Marriage is a Holy Sacrament instituted by God from the moment He said to Adam, “It is not good for man to leave alone. I will make you a wife – a woman as company. ” He said to Adam and Eve: ”Go and multiply.”
People of the same gender are excluded from getting married for obvious reasons. It was never in God’s plans for humanity that two men and two women get married.
It is good for the country, for nationals, adults and children. God bless Dominica and keep this type of marriage away from D/ca. May He convert those who are in relationships of the same gender, who want to be recognized and to get married.

Do not be surprised if when MiriDom finds they are unable to get PM Skerrit to give them same sex marriages they ask him at least to allow Civil Unions so they can have the same privileges and benefits as married heterosexuals. This will be their plan B when all else fails. MiriDom really does not care what the domestic arrangement is called just as long as it gives them what they want.
Legally, two men or two women could have a document that looks like a marriage certificate but instead it says they are joined in a Civil Union. Legally, it may give them all the rights and benefits a married man and woman would have. No, this would NOT be O.K. It would still be something God calls an ABOMINATION
Two men having sex or two women having sex is a sin. No government has the authority to give them permission to do what ever it is they do! No certificate signed by the head of state or his or her representative makes it right or puts the seal of heavenly approval upon it.

Civil unions were never acceptable in the sight of God. Governments are the ones who legislated it. Today, more people are having civil unions. I often visualize those who predeceased us where are their souls. Consider the number of people, those couples they misled straight to Hell and now homosexuals and lesbians are following. Marriage is a holy and honorable estate instituted by God for the mutual comfort of the husband and wife, the propagation of the human race, and the nurture and well being of children. It is the cornerstone of civilization.
Marriage is not the result of trial and error, or social evolution. It is a gift given by God to mankind at the creation of the human race. In the beginning God ordained marriage to be one man and one woman. Listen to the Word of God “And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. This marriage model given at the beginning by God the Father was reaffirmed by God the Son when he was on earth 2,000 years ago. He said “…Have ye not read, he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother. and shall cleave unto his wife; and they two shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more two, but one flesh.
What therefore God hath joined together let no man put asunder.” (St. Matthew 19:4-6)
Homosexuality is forbidden by God in the Old Testament.
It says, “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: It is an abomination.” ( Leviticus 18:22) It is also forbidden in the New Testament. It says “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? What if there was a law that prohibited heterosexual intercourse? As a heterosexual man/woman would you be at ease with the fact that you’re committing a crime every time you perform an act that you believe to be natural and just? Yes, you can have sex in the privacy of your own home and no one would know. But would you be comfortable knowing that someone with proof that you’ve had sex can provide it to the State in order that the state charge you??

Marriage is a contract between two people and so there’s a legal debate to be had. Some homosexual couples would like the legal protection and privileges afforded to married couples and so would call it a “union” and not necessarily a marriage, which has religious bearings.

On to the subject matter in question. I take issue with the Prime Minister’s stance on same sex marriages. His argument, as outlined in the article above is quite weak in explaining why his government refuses to even consider any changes to a law that effectively makes persons of a different sexual orientation a second class citizen.
I appreciate the fact that they are willing to have a dialogue with the minority rights group. However, if his government agrees to go to the table with the view to not change a single thing, then, how useful is the exercise? I’m not saying that the government should make a commitment to change anything (although that would be appreciated by the minority group in question), but, to outright say that they will not accept any change seems to be distressing to the exercise.
The PM is quoted as saying: “If other countries want to do it, that’s a matter for them but there are certain guiding principles that we must follow.”
I’d like to understand where the PM is coming from, grasp his argument. However in order to do that I need some clarification on what “guiding principles” he is referring to here. What are the origins of said principles? What do the principles entail or require from the PM and his government and by extension, Dominica? And why must all Dominicans follow this principle when every one of us is a different human being with different ideologies and different sexual orientations?
The article goes on to say: Skerrit said he is willing to meet with MiriDom to discuss issues, concerns and recommendation but, “I don’t think any one group should impose any views on any other group.”
That is exactly what MiriDom is fighting against:

But what’s on the books? Someone can be held legally liable for performing same sex acts. Sure. it’s not a witch hunt. But, can citizens of the Commonwealth of Dominica who fall into the same-sex bracket (LGBT, etc.) feel comfortable knowing that a private, consensual act of love or lust (that harms none involved much less for the PM and his government) can lead to legal repercussions and lasting social stigmatization?

I often wonder about the concept, ‘SEXUAL ORIENTATION’. Who coined it and how do they know it exists in reality?
‘Homo sexual, bisexual, heterosexual, are all names given to people sexual preferences. Preference does NOT mean orientation, does it?

Maybe the Buggery Laws should be revised in terms of adult men having their rights to choose who they want to be with in the privacy of their own homes , but not in the public and with minors. Dominica is not for that .
Sometimes I wonder what is Skeritt’s priority. I believe meeting with the electoral office in order to dispell the allegations that an email was sent to certain members of the electoral commission in an effort to distabilise the runnings of the office would be more important.
