Sickout at LIME

lime protestStaff of the Sales and Customer services of LIME DOMINICA have staged protest action as the company moves ahead with plans to outsource and privatize that area of operations.

Today, LIME is operating with a skeleton crew after staff from sections of that department called in sick, thus affecting the smooth and effective operations of the company.

“LIME has taken a decision to privatize that section and staff are very concerned, fearing they may lose their jobs,” persons with inside knowledge of the situation told DNO.

DNO has been reliable informed that bids have been submitted and it was just a “matter of time” for the person/company to be announced.

Officials of LIME are not commenting on the matter at this time.

I think Dominicans should start facing the real truth… stop blaming LIME and the other companies like DIGICEL, Marpin, Whitchurch, RBC, finefoods, KFC, just to name a few and all the other businesses that have closed down including small businesses and direct the blame where it should go. your government whom u have placed in office to make the environment conducive so that there are other opportunities is not doing what they are paid to do. think about that. they dont even realize that when all these companies close down it means less revenue for the government which in turn means more taxes for the remaining working citizens. it is time u people wake up and demand that the people we put in office to make our lives better do their jobs. fine it is hard every where around the world but we can do much better with the resources we have in dominica that God has blessed us with to make our lives better. Ask yourselves this one question… how has your lives been improved in the last 10 year. or five years??? don’t blame LIME staff for not having homes, the only persons that can afford homes is members of the cabinet and those who try to build homes cannot pay the banks… its a ripple effect people… THINK

Sometimes we need to put ourselves in others shoes to understand how they are feeling. Its their bread and butter they are fighting for. We should be supporting them. Kudos Lime staff fight for your bread! Its a shame that the Dominican GM is rushing the outsourcing, while the other countries are looking and learning.

It has also been announced that the staff members who are on strike were invited to bid for the contract and were provided with the necessary information and documentation from management of LIME. My understanding is that their bid is being considered, along with other bids, are no decision has yet been communicated by management on the successful bidder. So, I am not sure what a sick-out will achieve for the workers at this point. What I do know is that it will cloud the minds of management on whether to give fovourable consideration to the staffs bid. I am also sure that DPSU was consulted by staff. As to their role in this matter, let’s wait to hear.

    • Staff
      February 28, 2013

Frank Talker you seem to be sure of many things… except the truth.
      1. As a staff I am unaware of any sick out, I do know that some staff are not feeling well. I also know that this running sickness is also affecting other Businesses such as Royal Bank where 7 of their employees are on sick leave.
      2. Are you saying management have received a bid from staff, well then you must be on management because I am unaware of any bid submitted by staff.
      3. As a staff, I am also well aware that the minds of management have been clouded long long time ago, their minds cannot be clouded any further.
      4. As a staff I am unaware that one would need to seek counsel from the DPSU to take uncertified sick leave, in which law books did you see that?

So Mr. Frank Talker, get your facts straight.

@ staff – u singing for your supper

      • Anonymous
        March 1, 2013

No consideration was given to local staff as an option. Management felt that they were not good enough.

      • Frank Talker
        March 1, 2013

Thank you, “staff.” Thanks for de inside info.
        1. As to whether the absence is a sick out or not is all about definition, so I will not go further on this. Interesting that you are making a comparison with the RBC. Is this a clue of your identity?
        2. You are correct on the point made that retail staff did not submit a bid. I misunderstood my source and therefore I apologize for my original statement to the contrary. But since you did not deny that retail staffs were invited to bid and were provided the necessary information from management, then maybe this is still being considered by those staff members.
        3. The point I made about the minds of management being clouded is a relevant one. The mass absence of staffs will be interpreted by management of any enterprise as a loss of trust in those staffs. If those same staffs were to put in a bid, how on Earth do you expect management to consider it favourably? That’s the point I was making. The mass absence will cloud the minds of management.
        4. Of course, you DO NOT need to consult your Union to take sick leave and I know this very well. I was not however talking about sick leave; I was talking about sick out, and in this context I will say it again, “I am also sure that DPSU was consulted by staff.”

Does “sick out” does not solve the problem. They are going to send home people if they have to. The employees are just proving to LIME that they can operate with a skeleton staff. LIME is regional. I don’t think they worry about employees drama but only about their company and keeping it running smoothly.

Hallie Berrie, which self respecting adult would allow people to walk all over them, disrespect them, insult them, abusing them and then kick them out with out putting up a fight. How many managers do you know gets a salary of $20,000. a month in Dominica. Only one, and no, its not the Prime minister. LIME just spent $950,000.00 on renovating a new store, don’t you think that if they were considerate of staff that those managers would at least take a pay cut. JB was asked to take a pay cut to save jobs, he said no, he will send people home instead.Selfish greed and pride.

For along time now I have wondered whether mr. Baptiste was running an entertainments company instead of an telecommunications company. So much sponsorship of fete in such a small country, spending money like water. Obviously this must be at the expense of cutomers and or shareholders and appears now also at the expense of employees. Keep on spending money on festivities Lime and squeeze your workers to pay for it.

LIME HQ allows a certain sum for corporate sponsorship. As long as LIME DA doesn’t go over budget they can spend. Therefore, its not fair to use this argument to explain why they are releasing employees.

Lime has taken a trend past ten yrs in making its staff redundant an option they felt that would have reduced operating cost of the Company. BUT it begs me to wonder a million dollar Company trying to reduce cost but yet still they go ahead and pay millions to its shareholders…a million to carnival…a million to Creole in the Park and millions at Regional Activities..Lime needs to go bck to drawing board.

“Lime” in Dominica is owned by Cable & Wireless Dominica Ltd., in which the Govt. have a 20% stake.
This shareholding was paid for in the form of a loan by Cable & Wireless to Govt., which has not been repaid and is subject to dispute. According to the lates available figures, for the financial year ending 30 June 2010 Cable & Wireless claim the Govt. owe them E.C.$. 21.6 million in respect of this loan while the Govt. maintains it is “only” E.C.$.17.8 million.

      • STILL
        March 1, 2013

Let me see if i get you the government owns 20% of the shares by taking a loan from lime. So they got money and shares? Now with 20% of the company they would not have much say. This is not a cooperative

From what I understand, the other islands are giving push back because they think its a bad idea. The General manager in Dominica is going ahead and not giving the staff the option to run the shop.
The question is, why would a giant company like LIME wants to outsource a key department like Customer service? Isn’t that they do not care about the customers?

what does the palace have to do with Lime story?… well i think 27 million could be better invested in manufacturing plants of our home grown food, making food products….. boosting income for farmers thus giving them an incentive, many of marpin and lime workers could get jobs managing the business, technical aspects…. many able bodied young men n women could work at the plants…

kudos to Mr Baron for acquiring the water bottling business and employing some locals… this is the forward thinking initiatives needed in dominica…. and i don’t want to hear we can’t compete… rubbish, in a billion dollar market, there’s space for everyone, don’t be fooled… even fish can be manufactured etc….
