Site clearing for the construction of the much-talked-about Marigot Hospital began earlier this week, Health Minister Dr. Kenneth Darroux has said.
The Marigot Hospital was shut down in 2016 due to mold and fungus infestation. Before that, it was shut down because of a severe termite infection.
“In fact, as we speak work has started on clearing of the site at Marigot,” Dr. Darroux said at a press conference this week. “The last time I spoke to the press, which is about one month ago, you would recall that I said a contract was about to be signed…”
He pointed out that one of the major issues which caused the shutdown in the first place was termites.
“We would have had the place treated and we would have received clearance from the pest control people, environmental health that this site is safe to rebuild,” he said.
The Government has already announced that the Government of Mexico has committed US$5-million for the construction of the hospital.
In March this year, Darroux said the government was awaiting the designs from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to construct the hospital.
Why are they relying on money from other countries to build a hospital? What happened to all those hundreds of millions from the sale of passports and donations. That money should be in the Dominica treasury not in nefarious character’s pockets or their overseas bank accounts. All that money could have built a 10 story modern hospital with all the modern test equipment. Trustees from all over Dominica should be appointed and in charge of all the money for full accounting. An audit needs to be conducted to determine the whereabouts of those millions.

Whenever election approaches, we hear of this mountains of projects that are slated for the island, only to see not one completed on time to provide much needed service to the people. The boys took all the passport money and jollied around the globe. We do not have proper garbage trucks or a much needed hospital in Marigot to service citizens in the East. No matter what, the sheep continues to sing “Labor is working.” What a sad state of affairs.
That’s all these guys do: clearing sites and break ground and that’s where it stops unfortunately. Just a gang of incompetent thieves and liars.
It is about time. Long overdue. However, we will get excited when the hospital is built.
