Taking on the Electoral Reform challenge

The Concerned Citizens Movement which is making electoral reform a key priority, has given itself some tough challenges.

“Our aim is to stand as a defender of our country, upholding its democratic principles. To be a voice for the voiceless and to be championing the cause of injustice without fear or favour. Our vision is to ensure that Dominica remains a Democratic country irrespective of age, gender, social background, economic status or political affiliation, in so doing, ensuring that Dominicans will be able to enjoy his or her constitutional rights,” the CCM says while articulating its intention to continue its electoral reform campaign.

According to the organization it has already taken its campaign to several constituencies, with the Marigot area next on the agenda.

“This Saturday 10th March from 5pm the Concern Citizens Movement will be at Weirs Flat Marigot; and the junction called Central in Wesley from 7:30 pm. We are inviting all persons from the neighbouring communities i.e. Concord and Woodford Hill communities to attend this important event and come prepared to share your concerns, suggestions or comments at this event through our open mike session”.

The organization is seeking public support to accomplish its goal of electoral reform: “Through words and actions, we are calling on Patriotic Dominicans to help echo the call: – ‘There will be no general elections without the necessary electoral reform’”.

I am calling on the Citizens of Dominica to continue their struggles, because the harder the fight -the sweeter the victory. God will deliver us from this dictator one day
Just like Martin Luther King , and many others have told us, “The ark of the morale universe is wide , but it bends towards justice.” So these guys who are stifling Dominica from its growth will get out soon .
I fully support your efforts and will be at every meeting .

Very good initiative by the Concerned Citizens of Dominica. I just think it is so sad that they do not have the kind of support from more people who know that this is the right way to go for there to be progress in the land that we all so love.
Electoral reform should not be something that people have to come out to beat drums to sound an alarm! This is the democratic process that any decent respecting Government have to follow.
If the current Gov’t do not want to follow the rule of law , eventually the walls of justice will close on them.

They went to parliament to pass the necessary laws that were needed to have Electoral Reform, what did you guys do? Collected a parchay stones and preached violence until the PM had no choice but to cancel the house. Now you want reform. My brother there can’t be reform without the laws. It is the same now like Linton saying there cannot be CREAD with the law so put that in alu pipe and smoke it.

Let elections call now and let us see UWP not contesting. Sort alu Sort alu not seeing all LINTION IS CONCERNED ABOUT IS TO BE THE PM OD DOMINICA.

Electoral reform has nothing to do with Linton, it has everything to do with good governance and the strengthening of our democratic practices. The electoral system should be beyond reproach so which ever party wins there would be no controversies or court cases. Electoral reforms don’t favor one party over another. It makes the electoral system an even playing field. Only dishonest, corrupt and rogue politicians would scoff at a fair and just system to elect our parliamentarians. Anytime, any government fails to implement reforms that would improve an electoral system, this gives rise to suspicion. One can convincingly come to the conclusion that the government is engaging in skullduggery and political shenanigans.

In a time like this I do not believe we still have minds like yours in Da! Have you been outside since “Maria?” The land has been at a stand still and there is no one in Governement coming to tell us what their plans are to develop the country.
So as a normal person we have to be Concerned and do things for ourselves. This is the way we were taught to be independent.
Sad that the ministers have been travelling more so now than before the hurricane when we had more income coming into the land. That credit card will max-out one day and I want to see who will stay in Dominica to pay the interests.

What high order of garbage! Are you not ashamed with this level of idiocy?.In any parliamentary democracy, the Electoral Commission,a state institution has to do its duty, unimpeded by anyone. So stop your fixation in patriot Linton.

That group is an arm of the UWP, When the PM announce the date of election stay at all you home and do not come to the polls with all that foolishness all you talking, All u will see the amount of seats Labour will gather. In 1995 when UWP won the election there was no Voters Card. UWP is a lazy party like there leader. No political strategies, get rid of their best politician Joshua Francis. Rosie Douglas in opposition would sponsor football clubs, netball and rounders’ team. He would assist poor people children with education, assist farmers. That is y there was no electoral reform for him to win a general election. UWP must put there buts on the ground and start to work to win an election in Dominica. Isaac warned about the personal qualities of Lennox instead the supporters took it serious they listening Matt like that does not matter, UWP will be beaten worst at the next general elections.

The electoral system is pivotal to true democracy. A government that gains power due to electoral fraud and through wanton abuse of loopholes in the system cannot govern the affairs of the country satisfactorily. This present government has been urged by the Commonwealth Observers to make some necessary changes to strengthen the electoral system to no avail. This indicates that Skerrit is willing to win elections using an antiquated electoral system, fraught with problems, and has no intention of stitching up the loopholes that give rise to fraudulent activities.

The commission should be made up of members from all political parties to be effective. In any other country this would be possible, I doubt that could happen in Dominica. Free and fair elections should be of importance to everyone. One should be able to make their party affiliation known with out any repercussions. If one choose to keep their party affiliation to themselves that should be respected also.

Whilst I applaud your initiative I have to say that it won’t work. Electoral reform needs passing by parliament and Skerrit has a clear majority there. So that’s the end of that. Furthermore Skerrit has started campaigning already by handing out money, building material, relief items, etc., all of which were to benefit all citizens of DA, to his supporters. The only way to dispose of the Skerrit regime is to either vote them out or force them out with an ongoing and TOTAL strike. The UWP and your party should get together and plan this carefully and raise funding so that you can reimburse all the workers that are on strike for them not to loose out financially. It’s doable with determination, civil courage and a clear understanding that the entire effort is for the good of our beloved country. We can do it!!

It will be too little too late. elections will call and you all will still be scratching your heads. Ian had said they cannot implement unless it is legislature. Just remember 2019 is the latest for elections. If i know PM, he calling it this year or early next year to take advantage of the lack of reform. After that, the legislature will be passed, with a big celebration.
