Tour De La Dominique promotes competition among youth

tour de la dominique

Tour De La Dominique is a new initiative, which promotes not only friendly competition among the youth, but a healthy and vibrant lifestyle as well.

In this segment of ‘Tour De La Dominique,’ six riders from villages in the northern part of the island challenged themselves to take on Morne Espanol, from Dublanc unto the town of Portsmouth.

This guts and glory story of finishing this race took riders an average of 40 minutes to complete.

If done by bus, the journey takes between 7 to 10 minutes.

Riders had fun and pushed their limits to conquer the mighty mountain all earning the right to claim victory when they reached the finish line.

We must do things like reponsible people…every one’s safety is the most important in life because without good health none of us can move on in life the way we really want to…protective gears are needed in order to decrease the impact of any fatal injuries…especially to the head ,joints such as the fingers, knees and elbows..as we can see the young men are not well equipped in proper cycling gears ….the gov’t should make sure that they have life insurances so that in case of any accident they will be well covered for any medical ,hospital and their own every day live expenses…nonetheless it is quite interested for the youth in order to keep them occupied in life ,by doing so this might keep out of trouble, better health and relationship among them..

This is an initiative of Club 007 a young enterprising group who clearly have vision and purpose in organizing this, they may not have known of the previous initiative with regards to external groups participation however its a rebuild to something greater so kindly support and quit with the comparative to what existed before.

superb activity Dominica has some real comparative advantage when comes to this event. Anywhere in Dominica will attract the best of the best. There is also the potential for dirt bike riding competitions – that’s one I want to get going soon.

So this is what we’ve become? What happened to the real “Tour de la Dominique” of 2000 when PM was Minister for Sports, now President Savarin presented the awards, other then ministers like Ambrose George, and Timothy attended. There were 34 participants and photographs can be provided….The first Dominican came in at 14 a despite poor a bike compared to those from Martinique and Guadeloupe. Have we forgotten? Why was it stopped after two editions? The prospects of TV exposure for the island was enormous. 64 foreign clubs were interested in training on our hills…DNO we can provide you with all the details, most of all pictures that speak louder than words. This effort is probably commendable, but pale compared to what was set up before with the same name.

George, that was a fantastic idea but things like that should never be organised by govt because it will turn into a acmel with five legs, two heads and three humps designed by committee. Of course, govt. can facilitate but it should be a private organisation. I’m even thinking of a cross bike race in Dominica, an international one, using both dirt tracks and roads. We could start with Martinique and Guadeloupe because they are next door and those guys love their cycling.

Guys I love ya’ll ideas but simply talking about can be great but let’s try following up and acting on what we can do to make it even bigger.
CLUB007 was the one who started doing it and I think it’s a nice way to start but try to collaborate with these guys. They are on Facebook so if you guys want to link up with them, please do so.

Delbert Paris is also one of those you can find on Facebook. He was the one handing out the prizes at the end.

@ Titiwi, You are perfect right! such events “should never be organized by government”, AND IT WAS NOT! Don’t be too quick at defending without the facts. This event was organized for the first edition in 2000 just after the DLP took office. It was organized by the Dominica Cycling Association that went through all the hassles of having the word Dominica attached to the name. It comprised mainly guys from the Layou area who had cycling experience in Guadeloupe. The association nominated an organizing committee which was presided by the then Hon. Ron Green who was in opposition and maybe that’s the stupid reason for the failure of government to continue “facilitating” the event which costed absolutely nothing to the National Treasury. The event was “international” from the word go…As you may have seen in pics of the first edition, the Regional council of Guadeloupe was represented, Clubs from the French Islands, local companies and sponsors, the Police…it was a huge success…

This is a great initiative I always believe we should have a tournament like this and invite Martinique, Guadeloupe and France and make it as big as the Tour de France and get Discover Dominica on board and market it as a tourism product to attract riders from all across the world to participate through our rugged terrain.
