UK clamps down on CARICOM migrants

UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd
UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd

CARICOM nationals and other foreigners would no longer be able to take up jobs in the UK that Britons can do, while the number of migrants coming to Britain to work and study will be significantly reduced.

This was announced by UK Home Security Amber Rudd who explained that, under the new rules, employers can be jailed for employing someone who does not have the right to work there.

This means that CARICOM nationals and other foreigners will now find it harder to obtain a visa to some to the UK to settle, work, or study.

The story was told of a little white British lad (back when black people were migrating to England from where-ever) who, one day looked out his window and saw a black man walking down the street and talking to himself. The lad ran and called his mother and said, “MOMMY MOMMY, COME SEE A MONKEY! IT WALKS AND TALKS LIKE A MAN.”

No! not dat!!! You see, the British currency (Pound) is taking a pounding; They say that Baking-ham palace is consuming too much electricity and the up-keep of the gardens dat bearing no fruits, the Queen’s cruise ship and plane; Plus, the polishing of all dem brass, silver and gole that have no duss is staining Brutish economy – So now, they doe no wat fu do, so then, they turn towards we the poor people, as though that will solve dem problem. Listen, it’s hard time is every place imaginable. The rich people who use to ride on horse back and chariots, starting to feel what being poor and middle class really mean. Their convertible cars cannot roll down de streets as in times past because ……you no. Dem must be in hiding now, wi. Someone mentioned racism, it is. I can understand them taking stance against the muslin EU people that have flooded Britaiain, but to target CARICOM stinks considering they have dealt a HEAVY blow to Tourism in the Caribbean by inflicting heavy taxes and fees on airline tickets to the Caribbean, and 1/3 rd as much on travel to Australia. It now costs twice as much to travel to The Caribbean as it costs for them to travel to Australia.

What I find very ironic is that Dominicans are mad that the same thing Britain is implementing, as in giving priority to it’s counrtymen in regards to employment opportunities in their country, is the VERY SAME THING Dominicans are demanding from their own government!

Dominicans have a very convenient sense of morality….

    Damn Hypocrites!

there’s a big confusion here as most commentators have never been to England. As a commonwealth member, Dominicans are allowed a max 6 month stay without visa when travelling to the UK. we are not allowed to work or receive UK govt benefits during that 6 month stay. Of course enforcement of these rules have been lax so they are now stating that they will enforce the law.

No new rules, just enforcing the law.

all this happens when we exploit a good situation and buy one way tickets to the UK. Getting 10 pounds/hr for a particular job is a hell of a lot of money for a Dominican, but could be pricing out an Uk citizen who has taxes and other commitments to handle.

Just image if all the cashiers at Astaphans and other supermarkets where Haitian getting $400/mon. Wont Dominicans in general be mad? Its good for the supermarket business, but at those low wages its pushing out Dominicans. Image if a quarter of Dominican govt employees were foreigners- wouldn’t it be a natural reaction to demand to hire more locals irrespective if there are enough skilled workers available? That would be a hot political issue now wont it?

Basically if its not your country then one should plan to stay temporarily then move out.

And they want us to join their army. Tell them go to hell. They need to pay us for slavery.

    • Tell the Truth
      October 22, 2016

I would live and let live. One man or a group started it. When others heard they joined in. Remember they paid for who they later called slaves, to do their work.
They did not stop the influx of slavery; they did not free them and they did not return them to their country. The latter would be difficult to do. They saw a way to use them for their purpose of slavery. Since their skin was dark, they were assumed to be inferior to the white skin.
I wonder how many boat loads of them arrived in Dominica.
The person who commenced it is long gone. As it was stated, a man was bribed to catch them. What a thing to happen to people.
If this did not happen, where would we be? The majority of us from the Caribbean/West Indies, if not all of us are of mixed race. It must not be forgotten that we are not pure Africans; not a pure race. As the proverb, I would “let sleeping dogs lie” and “no use crying over spilt milk.” What is done is done and cannot be undone.

    • Tell the Truth
      October 22, 2016

Money cannot erase what was done. It is history. Anything done should be done in the name of the slaves; not this generation but dating back to some generations ago during the time of slavery and emancipation.

To be precise, I do not think they begged people from the Caribbean/West Indies, India, Pakistan and other countries to come to Great Britain. People voluntarily came. Some were interested; others not.
Great Britain opened its doors and what an influx of people they got, by the boatloads. I bet the authorities were overwhelmed but could not stop the influx, for a while at least.
At some point in the past GB had to put a stop to it. Today, more so due to what they are experiencing; no exception as other countries.

    • Tell the Truth
      October 22, 2016

Look at it realistically. Do not blame them. Just think. In the past some Caribbean/West Indian people came to Canada illegally. While here they could apply for landed status within the country. Many did. When some heard about it, they followed suit. Others sponsored their family. Canada got many immigrants in this manner from all over the world. Later, it was not easy to get landed status and from within the country. Today, it is worst.
It was also easy to obtain citizenship after five years if interested. Later it was changed to three years. All which had to be done was to swear on the Bible. Today, prospects must study. They must at least speak proper English and French, wherever they reside which is the primary language of the Province. They must know some Canadian history and other relevant matters.
It is not that easy to enter Canada and to remain there, if illegal.
As time goes by, everything changes. Great Britain is no exception.

All commonwealth citizens joining the Britsh armed forces do so voluntarily. There is no compulsion. People have a free choice, they can stay here or leave our country and if the way out is to join another county’s armed forces, who am I to blame our young folk. This is rather sad because we are not of terrorist countries. Unlike the Muslims who get in without much problems at the airport and they are the ones who are high on terrorism. Why do they always have to throw us out in the ditch like we’re nothing. All we do is try to better ourselves when we go to the UK, we don’t plot and try to attack their country with b**bs. Why are they being so difficult? if Britons don’t want to work then its a foreigners best interest to take on the job. That’s just plain selfishness!! Where’s the baroness to defend us for real!!

Don’t forget our government is also promoting the sale of citizenships, giving Dominica passports, to applicants from countries like Syria, Iraq and so on, which give them visa free access to the U.K. and the E.U. Expect that to change soon also and all Dominica citizens will be required to apply for a visa before traveling to the U.K. and the E.U. This is inevitable and unfortunately the government’s reliance on income from passport sales will collapse. Those who made their money already can go and live elsewhere but local Dominicans, with no second passport we will be left to stew in their own juice

    • Tell the Truth
      October 22, 2016

Times change. Today, no one enters in any of these countries that easily unless they escape immigration eyes.
As for Muslims, in view of what occurred in 9/11 and with ISIS, they will not enter that easily, no where in Canada, US and Great Britain. Their entry must be through legal means which is a long process for others as well.
Here is another problem. In view of the economy and unemployment situation, some are unable to obtain jobs and are dependent on the government.
Some are involved in gangs and drugs. Once caught, they are criminals. Some of them spend their days in criminal activities.
Great Britain has statistics on all nationals, employed or not; also on criminals, who they are, how long they are in the country, employed or unemployed, etc. In addition, some never worked and live a life of crime.
This is why today Great Britain clamped down on migrants. I am certain it is not only from the CARICOM, even though it appears to be targeted.

You must look at the in-depth of this; not only on the service.
If England was racist, people of color would not hold important posts in GB.
The EU was dictating to them. Now they do not have to answer to the EU. I speculate, this is also for the influx of refugees.
Have you not read what is occurring in Europe? Refugees march over to those countries. I feel sorry for the displaced people but there are costs in accepting them. It costs the government an exorbitant sum of money, taxpayers’ money.

Their citizens come to our country, they are called Expatriates and are paid the highest salaries on Island, “because we need them and their expertise and as such we need to pay them more then they would make in their country” such 4 king double standards. When Dominicans work the same job that they do, they tell us we cannot receive compensation tantamount to what they receive because our market say we should not get compensated at that level. Yet when our people out of work and cannot feed their families, the market remains silent.
Now they shut down our being able to move to their country in attempt to improve ourselves and by extension our circumstances.
So we are stuck on this Island with some 4criis laws that do not support Dominicans moving forward, unless you spread your legs, man or woman. Revolution, revolution, Revolution, the time is now.!!!.

People must think beyond and not be biased. There must be an unemployment crisis in the UK. No exception in Canada and the US. In bygone years jobs were plentiful. It was easy to go from job to job. Not anymore.
In addition, due to technology and ever-increasing systems, jobs are scarce Many are unemployed; not able to obtain same.
Consider how many in those days migrated to the UK. Children have been born there. Today, some are adults and probably some are unable to obtain employment. The government has the burden of providing financial assistance and health care to them.
In recent years, the UK must have taken in many refugees. Other Europeans and others migrate to the UK to seek employment and the list goes on.
The above poses a financial burden on the government. I do not think this has anything to do with prejudice. In terms of employment, I do think it is high time all governments of the world first think of their own.

If a government wants to clamp down, a directive must be issued as Great Britain did to inform and warn the people so that they do not take a chance, leave their country and migrate to Dominica of all. In other words, it must be known. If they are not aware of it, they will continue to migrate to Dominica.
Dominica cannot afford, is not in a position to financial assist them. For one, if there are no new jobs creation.

I would not be indifferent about people of the Caribbean applying to serve in the UK military. As I have previously stated, a war is not on at this time. Why disappoint those who may wish to join the military, be it that they reside in the UK?
I would think it is different for those who serve in the military and there would be an exception for employment. When their stint is complete, they could get free higher education. They could choose to remain in the military until they retire.
Many apply to serve in the military for that reason and for employment; likewise those in Dominica who apply to be a police officer. Today, where the money and education are, this is where most people apply. There is money, a salary and benefits to be derived in these careers.
A hindrance to applying to serve in the military is that, interested people would have to pay their way to attend an interview rather than the UK send its officials to recruit them.

You have asked a very pertinant question as to the deafening silence of the Baroness Scotland, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth on this matter. She might still be recovering from her luxury stint at the Olympics.
I really doubt she could make the slightest bit of difference so she merely enjoys the ride with her husband and lines her pockets as is the current status quo – all the rest can suck salt, to quote.
David Cameron only came to the West Indies to see where his ancestors made their money and to build a prison so England can send the blacks from their shores.

Hi Shaka Zulu: I agree with your comment above as relates the military – that is the way of the British. But do you recall our conversation on DNO 1st July 2016? See the link: https://dominicanewsonline.com/news/homepage/news/general/brexit-among-agenda-items-of-pm-skerrit-as-caricom-chairman/.

I was indicating that this is a very serious shift in European and global geo-politics and trans-continental trade that could never be ignored. I was highlighting the epic shift in global trade relations and the repercussions it WILL UNDOUBTEDLY HAVE on CARICOM Economies. I highlighted the impact on immigration and free movement. I indicated that geo-politically this epic shift will shake up Britain and the entire Europe – CARICOM REGION TOO. I hope it allows for a realigning of our development vision.

All the aforementioned has manifested in quick time. even those who are there legitimately will find difficulty. Again, I just hope it allows for a realigning of our development vision.

The Commonwealth serves only one purpose I believe and that is to defend the British if the need arises. European s will love you as long as you in minority and don’t pose a threat to their existence. Note here am not against foreign nationals working in Dominica, but I believe we can have something in place where a mandatory percentage of locals should be employed. If the later is achieved, then we can sustain our declining Social Security programme to pay retirees. One need not look further that DSS funds are declining, given the retirement age was increased to 70yrs. Further, increase local employment will be a cash injection into the local economy. I mean everything is related and less government expenditure for handouts for practically young able body men and women who can now find a job. Also, government needs to stop using the excuse of low skills personnel on island. Come on if that’s the case knowing that is half the battle won, so what have you as government done to fine the skills upgrade war? Remember the Nike Logo?
