Governor of the United States Virgin Island (USVI), Kenneth Mapp, has promised a ‘high level of transparency’ in managing funds from Dominica and other donors received for recovery following the passage of Hurricane Irma.
On Monday Mapp announced at a press conference that Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has pledged to donate US$200,000 to the relief effort in the USVI.
“We really want to manage the recovery in a transparent way, and really give people access to the information, get benefits to the folks that need it, and make sure the folks that are giving it, that they see it and know that the persons it is intended for are in fact the benefactors,” he said.
The USVI Governor noted that the funds will go directly to an account created through a foundation in the USVI that manages events such as Hurricane Irma.
He pledged that the public will be able to see how much is in the account and how it is spent through an online portal on the foundation’s website.
Mapp pointed out that the USVI has a large Dominican population and he had a good conversation with Skerrit who conveyed his wishes to the people of the USVI.
At a press conference on Monday Skerrit announced that the USVI is among a number of Irma-affected countries that Dominica has pledged to assist.
