WAWU gains majority to act as bargaining agent for Marpin’s employees

An opinion poll conducted on Tuesday among Marpin 2K4 employees has secured a 66% majority, ruling that the Water Front and Allied Workers Union (WAWU) is to become the bargaining agent of the staff of Marpin 2K4.

WAWU represented the staff of the then Marpin Telecoms and Broadcasting during its receivership.

Following the takeover by Marpin 2K4, the Union decided in consultation with the workers who were retained by Marpin 2K4, that WAWU would wait about six months to allow the company to settle before they re-applied for bargaining status.

WAWU then applied for such on September 09, 2009, and the management of Marpin 2K4 doubted the accuracy of the claim from the Union, according to Secretary/Treasurer of WAWU Kertiste Augustus.

Augustus said following the challenge from Marpin 2K4, the labour minister had to intervene and set up a process whereby a poll had to be conducted.

“In that process we had to go through the verification of list and the poll was held at Marpin Offices at Morne Daniel and Roseau. The results indicated that the Union secured 66% of the staff employed there. Based on the law which required only 51% we are the new bargaining agent as of Tuesday,” he said.

Augustus said a letter from the Labour Ministry will be forwarded to the management of Marpin 2K4 in that regard.

“The intention of the Union is to send proposals to the management of Marpin 2K4 and we will do that after consultation with staff because we understood that staff have a number of concerns,” he added.

Wish some other Unions in DA were like WAWU, instead they have some employees begging them to take up their cases/issues, they dragging their feet and in the meantime the injustices at the workplace continues. when its election they all out there, what they going to do and not do, now election over their mouth shut!
