We shall not be moved – Glanvillia residents

A resident expresses his concerns at a demonstration last Sunday

Glanvillia residents involved in a land dispute in the north of the island have vowed that they will not be moved to a new location as stipulated by the government.

Residents have occupied a piece of land called Georgetown and in a recent protest have made it clear that unless they get the land, there will be “no vote.”

On Sunday they took to the street to again register their discontent on the matter.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, has pointed out that the action of the residents is illegal and government had purchased 25 acres of land, with about 101 lots, in Cotton Hill for them.

But the residents say they will not move from Georgetown and MP Ian Douglas has sided with them.

Below is a video of the protest on Sunday.

How John Van Geest gave you guys land in Dominica when he did not own any land on the islands where he did business. That includes Dominica, St Lucia, Grenada and St Vincent. The guy was a dutch business man with ties to England. If you want govt land go about it in a better way. Skerrit have his ways but sometimes we have to do it the right way. The people that occupied the land know it’s govt land. Instead of driving around in high end cars and SUV that money should have been used to secure land. As a child growing up my mom would say don’t use concrete this is govt land

I suspect when members of the corrupt cabal meet next week, they will gang up on Ian and TOO FAY HIM for taking such action. WAIT AND ALL YOU WILL HEAR… Remember these are not men in here you know. They are pieces of plastics, that the dictator can handle like puppets on a string. They must do as he says. Ian my advice to you is when leaving Possie have two busses of Glanvilla people infront you ,two behind you,JUST IN CASE. Prevention is better than cure. Dying TOO FAY is not easy.

i support Ian for standing with the people, I just hope it is not all a big show and when the prime minister give them the land everything is nice and dandy. The prime minister will give them the land so that the government will look good and they will say in the end, “we the govenment looking out for our people”. Pure bull, the pressure the people put you under made you have a change of heart.
I wonder if people know half of what is really going on. The cotton hill land was for lagoon people because the chinese were suppose to get all the beach front land from in lagoon and the people were suppose to move but a certain advisor to the prime minister told him that land is too good for the lagoon people so they held back a little bit and all of a sudden it is for the glanvillia people. Man there is something fishy going on there, we are not being told the truth of what is happen around us and where we the people of Dominica stand.

You are being given free land, housing, road, drainage and you are dumping that to stay in a slum squalor…how could you have done this IAN…

If you were a needy Dominican like most of the people at Glanvillia you would not be saying that. tell the DNO reader what free land the people were getting. Be careful, the people are determined and well organized take heed and don’t look to intensify the situation. We want a peaceful resolution

I love the threat against the Labour Party when things don’t go their way. Politics in Dominica is so fickle; everyone wants something in order for their vote.

I can’t wait for the leader who doesn’t promise handouts and actually forces the general population to achieve their own destiny, rather than just give it out.

You mean to tell me, if I have a piece of land, which I intend to build on in the future, and retire, and it sits for 5-10yrs, and a squatter comes along and squats, you mean to tell me it is his, and not mine, give me a break here, squatters have no rights on other peoples land, PERIOD.

    • aa
      July 23, 2013

I think the law states that if the land is occupied by the squatter for 12 years and more, he/she has a legal right of ownership. This law was enacted by the Labour Party to protect poor people, after a similar situation occurred on Rosalie Estate where the people were thrown out of the then Rosalie village. The lands were sold to two white men.
Any lawyer care to clarify this?

” We were born Labor and we will die Labor” – Oh my goodness that is ignorance. So even if Labor drown your a$$$$$ Portsmouth people will still vote Labor. Sakwe Sort qui zor yais. This is what the corrupt Labor Party know that is why they are taking Portsmouth people as jokers.Look at Lagoon people they haven’t said a word – a lot of these people are just waiting for election to get a hand out and then wait another five years for another portion of handouts.
I witness a certain Parl Rep hand an old lady a $50 bill and then told her pa obilier chuliere la and I said Oh my god. I wanted to punch him in his fat face but I don’t condone violence so I walked away.
T0 the young generation it is time to revolutionize the political game in Dominica. The game as it is working against the people. I looked at fire in the video, a young man that I went to school with and thought yeh a fifty dollar bill will have him shouting Labor Power once again.

I am hearing about squatters rights a lot these days. I want to know about land owners rights. If I buy land and then somebody squats on it for 20 years, the persons has the right to just take y land, just like that. What is the message? Work hard, Buy land and lose it OR Sit back, wait for somebody to buy land and then take it.

What are the land owner’s rights? What incentive do I have to buy land?

Right now, the politicians have to decide if they will continue to always side with the poor man just for votes or if they will pay attention to the rights of the middle class who pay the taxes that run the country.

    • P
      July 23, 2013

Yes it belongs to the person who’s been on it for 20 years if you’ve made no claim to the land, or not asked them for rent. It’s in the books.

But this is a different story. If Geest left the land to the people its there’s. The government needs to listen to its people.

Wondering where is the free land for the hundreds of young professionals burdened by educational loans, and who struggle to find suitable jobs to facilitate repayment of debt? Where is the assistance for those who constantly display effort and work hard for what they need and want? I support government in assisting those who are in need, those who have fallen through the cracks due to circumstances beyond there control and otherwise, but not this, not in this way. The minister’s support for this cause is questionable…particularly given record of performance in constituency. But alas….we are in Dominica

So “Geest” gave them land without title? There had to be a better way to address this matter. What for them to demonstrate for they ignore. As it seem right now, these people are willing to sell their votes for a piece of land – not really concerned about the issues facing their country. If Skerrit say ‘yes take it’ he wins Portsmouth in a landslide. To me that’s just playing into Skerrit’s hand. What a shame!! Selling your Country for a piece of land is similar to Judas selling out Jesus for 30 pieces of Silver. Mark my words – Skerrit will find a way to appease the squatters to win their votes. Bribery as usual.
