WEATHER UPDATE: Tropical cyclone watches or warning possible later today

Models showing possible track of weather system at 2:00 pm Eastern Standard Time

The low pressure center east of Dominica has become better organized and is close to becoming a tropical depression/storm.

This system is moving west north westwards at 15 to 20 kph and is expected to begin to affect the island by tomorrow; Monday with the likelihood of some moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds across the island.

The Hurricane Hunter is scheduled to investigate the system this afternoon.  There is a possibility that tropical cyclone watches or warning be issued later today.

Residents in low lying areas, areas prone to flooding and landslides, and fishermen particularly on the eastern coast of the island should continue to monitor the progress of this system and be on the alert.

Sea conditions are expected to remain moderate today. However, with the approach of the wave, a deterioration in sea conditions is expected by late tonight into tomorrow. Small craft operator, seabathers and residents near coastal areas are advised to exercise caution.

Dominica News Online will continue to monitor this system and bring updates when they become available.

A young boy and his dad went out fishing one fine morning. After a few quiet hours out in the boat, the boy became curious about the world around him. He looked up at his father and asked “How do fish breath under water?” The father thought about it for a moment, then answered “I really don’t know, son.” The boy sat quietly from another moment, then turned back to his dad and asked, “How does our boat float on the water?” Once again his dad answered, “Don’t know, son.” Pondering his thoughts again, a little while later, the boy asks “Why is the sky blue?” Again, his dad replied, “Don’t know, son.” The inquiring boy, worried he was annoying his father, asks this time “Dad, do you mind that I’m asking you all of these questions?” “Of course not son”, replied his dad, “How else are you ever going to learn anything?”

By now many citizens on the Island should have been finalizing their preparations for this yeas hurricane season.

All important copies of documents including all types of certificates, copies of health passports, bank books, pictures, contracts, bills, and paper money should have been placed in Ziploc plastic bags or any other similar plastic bags that can keep these documents water tight.

If by chance you have Pringles packaging – the long tubes or the tennis balls tubes these can be used to place jewelry that you should have in smaller ice pop plastic bags and labeled with a code that is known to you.

Experience has thought me that DHL and FedEx plastic bags – those used to ship documents are very good for preserving fish and other meat kinds.

If you have a cooler it will be a good idea to buy extra ice from the various ICE outlets around the Country and pack your cooler with ice but to get the full benefit of that ice you must add rock salt to the ice. Table salt you will have to add in layers of the ice cubes. If you can remember old fashion tub ice cream the way you grandparents made it and how it stayed cold over 12 hours in the tub. It was more the rock salt in the ice water that kept the ice-cream rock hard.

It cannot be overemphasized for one to have lots of water in stock. Every empty 2 liter coke bottle in the house should have been cleaned, sanitized with a few drops of bleach with some warm water and rinsed and filled with water that was boiled earlier an d left to cool. Would you have a plastic barrel – the blue ones that come from foreign? Then fill it with water for the purpose of flushing.

Are your wardrobes movable? No shutters for your glass windows? Simply relocate that tall wooden wardrobe to the eastern window of your bed room and place your bed where you can get the bed head and the left or right side of the bed along walls with no window opening there. That should give some level of safety and comfort. If you have small kids like I do make them sleep under the bed on a thin sponge. Give them a small torchlight if possible and they will not bother you.

If you have an open plan house where living room and kitchen blends then you can move items such that you can run, dash or crawl with relative ease and minimize injury to self.

If you have a baby under two years old you should have at least three bottles prepared in advance and kept in a warmer, and have a garbage plastic bag close to discard wet and soiled pampers.

Every responsible person in your household should have a key for the house. All cell phones should be fully charged. There is even a service provider offering double top-up value at this time.

Persons on the west coast – Mahaut, Colihaut, Newtown, Loubiere, Scotts head, etc should know their designated shelters. Candles and lamps should only be used if a responsible person is available on hand to monitor its performance. You can also place candles in large Pyrex with water or a baking pan can do as well with water. Thing is you do not want a fire on your hands; most persons will be attending to their own affairs and you may not find help readily forthcoming.

All expensive electronics should have been turned off long before the thunder begins to rumble. Thus DVDs, flat screens, PS2 machines, other game machines, washers, dryers, dishwashers, cookers, should have all been turned off, unplugged and any transformers unplugged and allow to cool down and taken off the floor.

In your yard if you have loose tools like garden tools – these should be secured and not allowed to be airborne and damage the neighbors windscreen or windows. Pets should be in side as well and be patient with them too especially if the dog or cat has young ones.

In times like these there are a number of things one has some degree of control over and the other things are totally out of our control – like wind speed, levels of rainfall; our aim is to attempt to secure life and minimize the expenses of starting all over again.

It’s funny how we call upon God when we are going thru our difficult times and in this case, a possible storm; but when we are having our good times, he isn’t even thought off or mentioned. Sad but true. Just making an observation!

    • Humanist

Very true. I think it’s likely due to all those people who love crying out that the world is ending whenever something they don’t like happens, from the serious event at Layou to less dire things, like politics they disagree with. With all of those people yelling out that the end is upon us and quoting bible verses in all capital letters as if they’re screaming, it’s understandable that other people have begun to feel nervous about every little thing. As to whether or not this will be a “little thing,” we cannot say for certain, but it does not seem like it will be very damaging–certainly no worse than what Dominica has been through.

All this crying about “the end of times” is not only unnecessary; it cheapens the fact that Dominica has been through worse and will likely continue to go through worse. We should be learning about how natural disasters like this form and develop, how we can prepare our homes, and things of that sort; yelling out that the world is over is not only absurd, but profoundly unhelpful. (And I ask again: what does “the world is ending” even mean? What makes you think a likely small storm in a small island affects the universe in some earth-shattering way?)

why is it that when we are in desperate times everyone seems to remember there is a god and start asking for his protection. We should always remember him, not saying you should not ask for protection during these times, but we can do much better and always remember him. With that said, i really do hope we do not get any storm/hurricanes during the season…..
I do hope all the action/beach parties etc… gets rained out, we always broke and attend all those actions, makes me wonder…..

    July 31, 2011

Together as a nation we can band as one, in faith and prayer to avert any potential ecological or structural damages that the storm can have on the island. In times like these our unity is definitely on the line.

    • SMH
      July 31, 2011

SO when you pray and the storm hits another place does it mean your prayers were answered. Or is it that the other people werent praying hard enough You people never cease to amaze with this religion bullshit.

Weather and other scientific phenomenon doesnt change because some old white man with a beard is rolling dice to see what to do next.

And you have the gall to call yourself wisdom.

      • Humanist
        July 31, 2011

Yes, this is something that too many people blissfully ignore. They pray for the storm to move, believe they have moved it with their prayers, and then when it slams into Puerto Rico or Haiti or Cuba or wherever else it goes, no one seems to care about that island’s problems. The most evil of such people go so far as to condemn the island that was hit, justifying it by claiming the island is corrupt or some such thing. This is the same hurtful rhetoric that was used when Haiti was struck by its awful earthquake, with cruel people happily claiming that Haiti deserved it and all the people who were dead had been evil. The worst of these people claim that scientists who can show how the earthquake formed are satanic entities themselves.

It’s easy to forget that the world is not just an island when one lives on an island–I mean this in all seriousness–but, come on, people. We cannot act as though we are the center of the Earth (literally or otherwise) and that nowhere else matters. Storms come and go, as do earthquakes. It’s not a pretty state of affairs–but such is life.
