WEATHER UPDATE: Tropical Depression expected to become Tropical Storm today

11:00 am position and possible track of Tropical Depression Nine

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Dominica as tropical depression nine moves closer to the Lesser Antilles.

The depression is expected to become a tropical storm later today, according to the Dominica Met Office.

At 11 am, the center of the depression was located near latitude 15.1 north, longitude 52.8 west or about 565 miles or 910 km east of Dominica.

The depression is moving toward the west near 20 mph or 32 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days.

On the forecast track, the cyclone should move through the northern section of the island chain beginning early Wednesday and emerge over the Eastern Caribbean Sea by Thursday morning.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph or 55 km/h with higher gusts.

Total rainfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are possible over the northern Windward Islands to include Dominica. Dangerous sea conditions are also expected during the next 48 hours with swells peaking near 12 feet by tomorrow.

Interests in the islands should closely monitor the progress of this system as it races across the Atlantic. Persons in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are advised to exercise caution.

Additionally, yet another wave located in the far Eastern Atlantic is expected to approach the area by the weekend.

TD 9 looks like it will hit us squarely on our jaw. This tropical storm could do a great deal of damage here in Dominica. Our soil is already waterlogged there is nowhere else for the water to go! There will be mud slides and the rivers will overflow and flood, if any of you live in an area that could be in danger please move out of your homes and stay with a friend or family! DO NOT TRAVEL ANYWHERE IN THE STORM. Please everyone take no chances and stay indoors. The storm will be with us tomorrow! Stay safe everyone!
