WEEKEND FUN UPDATE: Name the plant

Thanks to all our readers who participated in our Weekend Fun activity.

It is good to know that so many Dominicans have a good knowledge of the medicinal purposes of some of our natural resources.

Our Weekend Fun plant is known by many names but the common ones are Inflammation Bush, Koklaya, Shine Bush, Silver Bush, Wall Cress and Zeb Kouwess.

The scientific name of the plant is Peperomia Pellucida and it belongs to the family Piperaceae.

Many people across Dominica use the leaves for making tea for ‘cooling down’ purposes, for bathing babies (as a guard against prickle heat), for inflamation, for salads and the like.

See you soon on another exciting Weekend Fun installment.

Oh. This is Coclea or cocria. It is amazing how many different spellings that we put to this one little plant. But this little plant has multiple uses. Salad, tea(brew), rub, and this list goes on.
Is this plant native to Dominica? I have lived on several Caribbean Islands and I have never seen this plant anywhere else except Dominica. By the way DNO can you find out the biological/botanical name?

    • Sorrel75
