Work of elderly should be highlighted Senator Benoit says

Benoit said it is important to embrace the elderly

Senator Jahisiah Benoit, in a recent statement, said that the work of the elderly should be highlighted since it is fundamentally important to the sustainable development of Dominica.

He made these assertions while delivering remarks at the inauguration of the Dominica Council on Ageing (DCOA) held at the Fort Young Hotel recently.

Benoit said also that it is important to “embrace our seniors”.

“We must highlight their work because it is fundamentally important to the sustainable development of Dominica, because your organization, the work of your organization sets the platform by which we can bridge the generational gap and harness the knowledge and the experience of our seniors as we move from one generation to the next,” he said.

Benoit is of the view that the new President of the DCOA, Gloria Shillingford, the other members, along with the new Youth Arm which was launched at the meeting, will develop skills to be successful in the future.

“It’s not only about giving back to our seniors but you will find that in your interaction with them, in your experience within the Youth Arm they will give you skills that will help you move on and to excel in life,” Benoit noted. “And when I consider the membership of this Youth Arm I have no doubt that your achievement will be legendary.”

Benoit went on to say that the youth is the greatest asset any nation can possess.

He encouraged members of the DCOA Youth Arm to work hard towards their goal and use this opportunity to develop skills through volunteerism.

The theme for this year’s month of the elderly which is being observed in September is: “Embracing the Elderly Everywhere.”

Jahisiah, are you “sot,” stupid or something?

Explain to me how, or what importance the past work of old and retired people have to do with sustainable development in Dominica!

Can’t you see how stupid are your comments?

What has the English language done to people like you, that you use it in all the wrong form?

Man talk about developing a system, where old retired people can go and legally apply for assistance, and a monthly cheque given to the elderly, so that they can sustain themselves, and not having to sit and wait for Skerrit $200.00 dollars with the words written on the envelope “From the Prime Minister.”

    That is an illegal handout!

When you decide to pop your head out, let your comments be something which contains substance; talking garbage looking for a seven minuets of fame will not help you!

Pure ignorance .Give the young man a chance to make his contribution. The retired people have made a significant contribution towards Dominica. You want to correct someone by pushing them down, is this the new teaching method?Insult and conquer is a damaging formula.

“Embrace our Seniors??” In a corrupt democracy, Benoit? We have to Embrace democracy, the decency of governance that embraces everything. To recognise and embrace a family, the parents are the key to children’s development and discipline, such is the role also of a decent government and we cannot say the same for this corrupt Labour government that you got yourself part of. What is it that Skerrit has offered you? Embrace yourself and get out of this fake government abusing the vulnerable people of Dominica. Open your eyes, you are being used and abused and that is not Embracing at all. Get out, embrace yourself away from this fake and corrupt labour government.
Get out and find role models who are able to guide to a decent life of decency, honesty in politics, if this is your future career.

Every independence the elderly are rewarded with medals. In the Public Service some of the elderly are given contracts to continue working after their retirement.

This to me highlight their achievements – after all if they did not achieve, they would not be rewarded

Happy to see their is a DCOA Youth Arm. Good luck to them. Learn and do well! The older and elder persons can learn from the youth as well. Great points Mr Benoit.

I am so with you on this one Mr Senator! These people are the key to the fountain of youth! Our elderly has the stories, the history and the advice that our kids should listen to and interpret.
