Geothermal EIA made public

It appears that the authorities have caved in to public demand and have made an Environmental Impact Assessment of the geothermal project in Roseau Valley public.

That EIA has been at the core of the protest by many who questioned the government’s exploration of Dominica’s geothermal potential.

Chief among them is the Geothermal Awareness Committee in the Roseau Valley.

Last Thursday, the placard-bearing group organized a protest outside parliament demanding that the EIA be made public.

“We want the EIA to be made a public document for the rest of the Dominican people to see what is in the EIA,” PRO of the group, Jeffrey Charles, said last week.

The document is 447 pages long and is in PDF format.

JOE I agree with you 100%, because Skerritt Government doing it, there is a problem. Dominica have been talking about Geothermal Energy since before th 1980’s and people was for it. Why are we going against this now??? There are people who are not from Dominica hampers the Development of this country and when they finish FOOL us they will walk and laugh at the oppostition. Green Peace also gave this their blessing as the world is looking towards Green and clean energy.

Land of 365 rivers yet still “In fact, the ecosystems in the rivers of Dominica are still not well-known. Nor are there any criteria in place that will permit characterisation of the rivers’ good ecological status along the lines of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) implemented to cover French water courses by the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable development, Transport and Housing” (page 59) So where has this left us as a Nature Isle.. time to get serious with things that really matters!!!

“The potential drilling and geothermal energy production sites are not affected by
any environmentally protected area” True dat.. (page 58)the study sites do not fall within these protected areas BUT what is the likely impact that drilling could have on these sites in the near and distant future????
I guess we will have to wait for the FINAL REPORT of phase 1. exploration activities and not the EIA to inform us ass to what exactly went on during the exploratory drilling studies!!!!

Roseau River… one of the few free flowing rivers in a Caribbean capital township. We pride ourselves of having 365 rivers yet still “There is no water quality standard imposed by the Government of Dominica” (page 41). Fe real!!!!

It taking foreign nationals to tell us that “In light of this first approach to the Roseau River and based on the analysed parameters, it APPEARS that the physico-chemical quality of the water course, as regards the future catchment area, is good”.. So when will we appreciate these priceless gifts and start knowing for ourselves.. One thing that EIA bringing out a lot more than geothermal concerns!!!!

    Valley People

There is a high risk of hydrothermal eruptions in the areas of Wotten Waven, the River Blanc, Valley of Desolation-Boiling Lake. This type of eruption or explosion is linked to the presence of deep high-temperature aquifers.

The use of these shallow reservoirs may increase the likelihood of these eruptions occurring (page 45)

1.No natural hazard is likely to affect the study area. i wonder how they are sure of that.

The government have had enought time to produce a heavily EDITED version of this EIA. Only a fool will believe that this EIA, which was so ‘holy’ is now made so easily acessable to all and sundry.

I wonder how many of us are going to accept it or actually read the 447 pages

    • hmm
      March 7, 2013

why not? it’s the genuine report right? why shouldn’t it be accepted?

are you going to read the whole report? you alone that can read a whole report? why are you inclined to think/wonder if people will read the whole report?

Give people some credit. Damn condescending!

        March 9, 2013

It’s people like you who give country a bad name. I was not trying to be condescending. I’m just saying that too many of us will not take the time to read the report and have an intelligent conversation. But you are quick to become insultive and ignorant. Have you read the entire report. Are you now ready to have an intelligent discussion looking to further the development of the country. Or are you going to be one of those people who will just look to insult others and not consider their opinion but expect them to accept yours.

What kind of attitude is this? First you making noise because the EIA is not available to the public and then you complain it is too long when it finally does appear. If you really care it does not matter whether is 447m pages or 1,000 pages long. Take your time, study it and make comments after careful consideration. I am going to do exactly that.

Lol, lol…So when will you be pleased??
It’s like in an old cartoon: They say you need a licence to hunt, you get one. Now they ask is it a licence to hunt manikou? you get one. Now they ask ..to hunt manikou in the hills? you get one. Then they ask .. in the hills of Senekou? you get one…You may not get the joke …but in essence it never ends… lol lol

But fact is really they need to at least seem to be transparent and always make these documents public. However, all sides studied contradiction and know that either way it will get blows.

Boy Annon, you deep. I get it, ole Elma Fudd/Daffy sstuf. But Country Man, who I suspect might be formally Sout Man is deep too, he jus didn’t elaborate b’cause mos times you can tell by the title/subtitles of a document, w/o reading the whole thing.

Where are the specialist independent investigators we have in Dominica. If the “opposition” against the geothermal project is properly investigated, it will ocnclude that the real perpetrators/agitators behind the opposition to geothermal energy are not Dominicans. There is group of expatriates living in the Roseau Valley who do not want to see development for Dominica (ultra-conservationists ala Green Peace) who have persuaded a small group of Valley residents to voice some concerns. Do the investigations DNO.

      @ Observer

Stop that xenophobia and fear mongering. Don’t attack the messenger(s) but the message. The mere fact that the govt. panicked and started by hiding the EIA already proves that whoever stated this concern was indeed genuine.

      For them, no development=cheap land.
One of them came and met the hydro plant in existence, bought land in the Valley and has complained bitterly about that hydro plant ever since.

      March 8, 2013

You are somewhat correct, the issue surrounding the opposition to this project started off as a concern of land owners in the laudat area for which a meeting was held to discuss these issues. This meeting was hijacked and it is interesting the number of these persons who were present including residents from surrounding communities and thses persons were very vocal at the meeting.
It would be interesting to find out who are the persons who ake up the Geothermal Awarenes Committee (GAC).

I don’ think that there is any opposition to an alternate source of energy against that of fossil fuel. my understanding is that, one should not go into the exploration by any means possible without the proper assessment and off course, cost analysis. This project cannot be going on at any cost. I support any form of alternate source of energy be it geothermal. wind, solar or hydro. I am just mindful about the manner in which they could be carried out and the cost implications. That to me are the real concerns that need to be addressed.

The difference between you and Lennox is, he can and will read…and understand what he read. You on the other hand, these things are way above your level. You lack the capacity to even read and understand the first page.

        March 8, 2013

My partner i am in 6otal agreement with you….the reason i posted that it was a lot f pages for Lennox to read is because i have reduced myself to waiting for Lennox to disseminate complex information to us so i can get a better grasp of it.
Before you went chewing off my head yopu could have wondered if what i said was in a positive or negative tone. The LOL is because i am a happy person and i always include it in everything i write.

        March 7, 2013

        March 8, 2013

of course they are having the last laugh, they laughing at you too because you have not even read the document yourself to realize that the report for the production and re-injection wells has not been released. It is only the exploratory stage we are reading about here. But again, why am I even wasting my time to explain nothing to a bafoon and an empty head.

      • Joe
        March 8, 2013

        @BAFOOON

Have you read the Document?? This EIA is adequate not only for Exploratory work but for Production and Re-injection works as well..

Reda the Document and you will see what am talking about because it is obvious that you haven’t read it!!!!

ALL IN ALL THE GEOTHERMAL PROJECT IS THE BEST THING FOR DOMINICA!!! If it was oil we had all you the so-called Intelligencias would still complain because it is happening under the leadership of ROOSEVELT SKERRIT!!!!!!!!
