An over 1.5 million dollar upgrade to the old Acute Psychiatric Unit, APU, building at the Princess Margaret Hospital is aimed at providing greater access to healthcare in Dominica.
The ongoing project will see the once dilapidated structure transformed into a modern facility, housing services never available before in Dominica.
Hon. Julius Timothy, Minister for Health and Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau North Constituency where the hospital is located, has described the project as “a step in the right direction”. Minister Timothy said this is a testimony of government’s commitment to improving the lives of the Dominican people by creating greater access to health services which previously had to be sourced overseas.
He stated further that this compliments other measures already put in place by the government. When completed the old APU building will house a diagnostic centre, including mammogram and CT scan machines, oncology unit, health information unit, conference rooms and situation room.
But wait a while. I thought the old Psychiatric Unit was being repaired to house Drug Prevention Unit offices. Election is around the corner and they start to go crazy so when they wake up whatever they dream it making news. Time will tell.
Modern health facility with diagnostic center, (my big toe)! Boss, I heard more than that already. Remember all what was said about the upgrade at the Portsmouth Hospital? How is was going to be equipped with the latest bio-med equipment and will be the number 1 diagnostic center in the whole eastern Caribbean? Dominicans were told that we won’t have to travel overseas for many of the imaging and diagnostic services we now travel for. What became of all that hoopla?

It’ a shame though you have to go all the way to a CHinese website to see renditions of the plan for this ‘new’ hospital. I thought it was going to be a totally new project, but seems they are just going to ‘rehabilitate’ the existing structures… kinda the same way they ‘rehabilitated’ the west coast highway.

Because had we read the article we would have known that the upgrade is to the OLD APU BLDG(no longer used for that purpose) for the provision of new services like oncology(cancer) and other diagnostic services.

That is some great news. Because there are lots of mad people who pretending to be sane who will now check themselves in. I think they should speed it up before next election because there will be a great wave of mad people emerging.

Please note that a brand new building by itself does not make any facility into a “modern facility”. They have to have the proper systems in place before they can lay claim to that boast.
If you have the same limited equipment, limited staff, limited training then a new building will just be only that, and the same old beat will go on.

Sadly this is not about upgrading psychiatry it is about converting the old APU building into Oncology etc. Very welcome as it moves chemotherapy patients into more secluded environment. However we will have to wait a while for modern psychiatric services with a day hospital outpatient counselling and detox and rehab services for substance abusers
I hope Timothy will take his brain therapy there. I hope skerrit will take his compulsive disorder treatment there and I hope savarin will do his grey matter surgery there. Mervin will be the prison officer attached to the unit.
If election is in March 2014, then they better step on it with four thousand workers so that before March it will be all complete.
They should make a jail downstairs of the unit to house all the ministers, lawrence, kamala, philsbort and daryl. King Herod will take care of Tony. Mervin will pull the rope.

Thanks for making the Psychiatric Unit more comfortable in preparation for us “high and mighty” folks who are definitely going to make their our residence soon.
