Govt to remove duties on biodegradable items

The ban on Styrofoam and plastics takes effect in January 2019

In preparation for the implementation of the ban on Styrofoam and plastics, the government has taken a decision to removed duty on bio degradable items.

Hon. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said this measure will take effect from January, 2019.

“The cabin has taken a decision and legislation to ban on Styrofoam bowls, cups and plastic food utensils and remove the duties and biodegradable items so that our citizens can have access to it in a cheaper fashion. From January, we will have that in full effect and we look forward in everybody cooperating and collaborating.” he stated

The prime Minster also expressed concern over the indiscriminate littering which is taking place in Dominica.

“There will be other actions that the government will articulate in respect to biodegradable items but also the littering, because we have to address this in a fundamental and serious way as a country. Too many people are just throwing things on the streets, on the side of the road and ravines with no admonition and those that do not listen, will feel the full extent and wrath of the law,” Skerrit said

The Prime Minister encourages everyone to work together as a country “if we want to see a pristine and clean Dominica.”

Dubai is well known for its luxurious lifestyle. The hotels, travel and rental car agencies use it to their benefit and try to exploit the tourists. They bombard the tourists with lots of hidden charges that the person would not have even imagined. The largest of those hidden charges comes with renting a car.

Unfortunately this is an admission that this measures will not be in place by 1 Jan. 2019, an undertaking given by the P.M. In his budget address. It would be helpfull if he were to give a difinite time line, even if it has to be redefined. This should not be an impossible task for the government. We do not want this to drag on if we are not to lose our credibility with this initiative, part of the much touted resilience drive..

I’ve heard really wonderful things about Japan! Ugh yeah here in Taiwan people aren’t that rushed either but Korea was a whoooole different story when it came to riding the subway or bus! Sad story, we actually had a CS lined up for Busan but then our host crapped out on us the last minute 🙁 I would have loved to try CS there but guess it wasn’t in the books for us to do it.

The govt has a dire need to remove or drastically lower duties on many items particularly vehicles. This will lower the cost of living in Dca.

Good. What I’d like to see is a ban on ALL plastic soda bottles. Government can remove the duty on machinery and glass bottles and go back to the old method of bottling soft drinks.

    No vision

Why jot keep the fees and create a collection industry where fees are returned when waste is returned to a depot? This would create sustainable employment, in essence encourage proper disposals and cost less to the state in cleaning etc…

There is zero intelligence in this administration. We need fresh blood.

Presently the ban is specifically related to Styrofoam and plastics connected to food packaging.

All paper, card, wood and natural fabrics are degradable whereas all plastics and synthetics are not.

Either way, I will continue to use my home-made canvas shopping bags, eat off ceramic plates, wear cotton clothing and make my own windows and doors out of locally sourced hardwood..

Dominicans do not like to dispose garbage properly. Passing the law will make little or no difference. Parents complain when we instruct students to clean up the school yard. It has been like that for at least two decades. I think we can try to get our ‘young’ bands to create songs with lyrics that support that activity in a positive way. Instead of the crap they have the youth listening and dancing to. I remember Burning Flames had a very good one and it really got the youth going. Also we need to educate Dominicans at large about the positive and negative effects littering has on Dominica especially our visitors.(tourists)

If you are so concerned about littering, have you placed bins around the island to collect the garbage?
