Outgoing President of Dominica His Excellency Charles Savarin has described new President-elect Sylvanie Burton as a leader in her own rights.
Mrs. Burton won the majority of votes in Parliament on Wednesday morning over her opponent Anette Sanford and created history by becoming the first duly-elected female president of Kalinago descent.
“Mrs. Sylvanie Burton is an exceptional person in her own rights,” he said. “I have known her for more than 20 years and she has always struck me as being a very level-headed person, very well-informed, and a leader in her own rights.”
Mr. Savarin continued, “A leader in her community, somebody in the various issues in which she gets involved in, whether it is community development which was one of her responsibilities, or foreign affairs, and a person who rises to the office of Permanent Secretary in the public service, rises to the pinnacle of the public service.”
According to him, there are only two positions in the entire public service higher than that of permanent secretary and that is cabinet secretary and financial secretary.
“Other than that, each ministry has a public officer who is in charge of the ministry and that public officer is called a permanent secretary,” Mr. Savarin explained. “Mrs., Burton has been permanent secretary in several ministries and nobody can challenge her competence, her leadership, her eligibility to be President of Dominica.”
Furthermore, he is happy for Mrs. Burton, on a number of levels, as someone he knows and respects.
“I am happy for her because she is the first woman in Dominica to assume the office of President,” Mr. Savarin noted. “I am happy for her because she is the first Kalinago woman to be elected to the office of President Dominica which says a lot for Dominica.”
He went on to state that there are issues for indigenous people all over the world, but here in Dominica, “we have [not] only said but we have demonstrated that we consider the Kalinagos to be an integral part of the Dominican society.”
“They can hold any office; they can rise to any occasion and I think that this is an excellent demonstration of that fact and no one can dispute that from henceforth.”

Those who believe it to be anything more than that are only deceiving themselves.
You Mark, I believe the people should have a say in electing the president of the country, rather than an appointment.
Hence there should be some power vested in the president.
The Dominica President doesn’t have any say in any matter, except being a rubber stamp.
I remember once Lennox suggested that Charles fire Roosevelt, all Charles could have responded is to ask Lennox to point out to him the chapter in the constitution that gives him the power to fire Roosevelt!
In any event if we are a republic, the country should be run by an elected president by the people, and maintain a similar system to that of the United States.
Term limits for one to serve as president would not exceed two terms or eight years.
As such no one in the country could make the presidency there estate.

At a recent press conference, Roosevelt flippantly revealed that Dominicans debt to GDP ratio was about 100%. I know it is over that fictitious percentage. This is alarming. It means that most of the revenue that the government collects goes to servicing this monumental debt. It also means that hardly any money is left to take care of healthcare, salary and wages, infrastructure, agriculture inputs, etc cetera.
What is even more alarming is that none of the local media houses or reporters has commented on this significant revelation. What a country of incurious, lethargic journalists!

Matt knows there is no damn truth in Skerrit’s propaganda press conference that most of q95 listeners don’t care to listen to. But somehow that’s all Matt wants to replay on his hot seat that’s already taken by vendors and talk on the block. Skerrit found a way to distract q95 listeners from real hot issues to his corrupt lying agenda.

I was elated when Lennox Linton repudiated Matt’s nonsense about the opposition parliamentary opposition members were caught with their pants down. He (Matt) has refrained from repeating this frivolous and disgusting statement again.
In my honest opinion, Matt does not have the intellectual ability to conduct probing interviews. His knowledge and vocabulary are both limited. He then resorts to throwing ‘red meat’ at his audience. Luftus does much more thorough and adept programs and interviews. Matt is an intellectual straw weight (the lightest weight in boxing).

Sean Douglas turned out to be the joker in the house as he knew not what he spoke of. An why is Annette Sanford a better choice than Mrs. Burton? Annette is a member of the UWP, she is a former UWP senator and a candidate for deputy political leader of UWP, how does this qualify her to be elected when her party is not even in parliament. And if Skeritt had nominated her the UWP would not have supported her, they would say that she was bought and paid for…..and the same things they are saying about Burton they would say about her.
