The East Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists join the Caribbean Union in Hands across the Caribbean on Sunday, September 19 at 7 am with a massive Health Walk throughout the Caribbean.

Twenty-five countries will participate in that walk. It is estimated that over 50,000 persons will be participating from Suriname in the south to St.Croix in the north.

“Hands across the Caribbean” is an initiative of the Caribbean Union Health Ministries Department. The Seventh-day Adventist Church has been promoting Healthy Lifestyles for over 100 years. Back then it was called Health Reform.

Members of the church are encouraged to abstain from the use of tobacco, alcohol, coffee, narcotics and other mind-altering drugs. The church emphasizes the use of a plant-based vegetarian diet low in sugar, salt and fat. Fruits nuts grains, vegetables and beans are recommended as the diet to maintain health and promote wellness and longevity. This type of diet was recommended along with other natural remedies such as regular exercise, 6-8 glasses of water daily, adequate sunshine, fresh air rest and trust in divine power.

As Caribbean islands developed and adopted Westernized lifestyles, becoming more and more sedentary, eating larger amounts of meat, sugar, salt and fat we have seen a shift from communicable diseases to chronic non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, respiratory illnesses and cancer.  The church therefore is doubling its efforts and joins with ministries of health in the region to encourage increased physical activity healthy eating and smoking cessation.

In Dominica and Barbados the walk is organized according to Pastoral districts 8 districts in Dominica and 16 in Barbados and begins at 6:00 am.
