BREAKING NEWS: Dengue alert

Dengue is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito

The Ministry of Health would like to inform the public that there is an outbreak of Dengue which is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito

There were 15 confirmed cases of Dengue Fever for the last month.

The majority of cases are within the Roseau Health District which includes the Roseau South, Roseau Valley, Roseau North, and Roseau Central up to the Mahaut area.

We are also awaiting confirmation of nine other suspected cases

The Ministry of Health wishes to inform the population that vigilance should be maintained to avoid the increase of cases.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever include High fever, rash, severe headaches, back pain, eye pain, muscles and joint pain.

The time between the bite of a mosquito carrying dengue virus and the start of the symptoms averages 4 to 6 days, with a range of 3 to 14 days.

An infected person cannot spread the infection to other persons but can be a source of the dengue virus for mosquitoes for about 6 days

Persons with symptoms should report to their Health Center, doctor or to the Princess Margaret Hospital.

The Environmental Health Department and the Health Promotion Resource Center with support from National Pest and Termite Control Ltd. and other stakeholders continue to reactivate  the National Dengue Emergency Plan  including :

•    Continued mosquito surveillance
•    Fogging operations
•    provision of chemical to eliminate breeding sites
•     Investigation and surveillance of both suspected and confirmed dengue cases

The Ministry of Health continues to urge the general public to practice safety measures such as keeping drums covered, disposing of tires appropriately and keeping your environment clean to ensure the prevention and spread of dengue fever.

I stand corrected but HIV is NOT transmitted by a mosquito! EACH INDIVIDUAL MUST ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY for his or her sexual behaviour!

i did not say it was transmitted by mosquito, what i am saying it is a massive health risk, bigger than dengue, but we seem to not be able to give our people education in this disease, or any other sexual health education, hepititus is just as deadly, or clamydia can lead to infertility, gentital herpes can cause blindness to a new born if de mother is in an active stage of the infection while she gives birth vaginally, it is all education, and wit de way of de world we need to educate on every subject no matter how taboo people may think it is, these are just as life threatning.
yes induviduals must take resposibilty for there actions, but they need to know what there action may lead to wee….

The majority of cases in Roseau.

Well one main cause could be the amount of rubbish left on the roadside/in gutters. It always amazes me that the city council could actually get people to clean the gutters, chop down trees/bushes AND then pile them in neat little heaps and then LEAVE them there for months on end . This half baked exercise only means that when it rains the rubbish goes right back in the gutters forming little islands which then gets filled with water. The perfect resting/breeding place for mosquitos.

I would like to know if some sort of vaccine has been created to combat this Dengue disease.
In addition, I would recommend that persons clean their surroundings and burn whatever can be burnt, since smoke may cause these creatures to disappear. People, please be careful

The test done to diagnose Dengue Virus is (CBC) complete blood count. Drink lots of fluids if there are signs of dehydration. Tylenol for fever, for aspirin causes stomach bleeding in most people.

In severe cases one might need electrolyte replacement. The small kids need to always wash their hands.
