Call for change in nurses’ attitude

Araminta Thomas

A retired nurse here says she is praying that the attitude of the country’s nurses will change for the better.

Retired professional Araminta Thomas has called on the island’s nurses to uphold the nursing profession with the highest standards and ethics.

Thomas, who worked throughout the country during her active years of service, is encouraging the nurses to embrace their work with pride and professional excellence.

“Let us not forget, nurses are teachers of health, they have to cooperate with each other they have to respect their seniors and juniors. Nurses should work with an attitude of each one teach one. Nurses have to uplift each other,” she said while addressing a panel discussion organized by the Dominica Nurses Association on Monday May 14, 2012 as part of activities marking nurses week 2012.

“Remember you are called to service and you have an account to give and the account we have to give is to God”.

The retired nurse cautioned that nurses should treat others the way they would like to be treated, and reminded today’s nurses that they are called to serve with compassion and love.

“I am praying and I am hoping that the attitudes of nurses will change.” Thomas said.

i HAD SO MANY NEGATIVE ENCOUNTERS AT THE PMH EH BUT I WILL MAKE THE “PAGE LONG” STORIES SHORT!!!!!

I remember rushing my son to hospital, he had a high fever, when i reach there was alot of people, before the nurse ask me what’s wrong? she said to me “Go and sit down over there.” There were no seats, She sent me to sit right on the other side of the hospital before even asking me what’s wrong with baby….after and hour, no service, i just go about my business…….

Another time, this same child with fever again, sky high!!! shouldn’t babies given prefrence? A set of old people gone inside and my baby catching fire in my hands, the child could get a fits!

Another time he end up on the ward….Imagine these nurses were giving my baby expired Iron medication!!!!! Thanks to this one nurse who observed the medicine was not the color it ought to be…i said to her, nurse this is what they have been giving him whole week, she told me “maybe they did not know.” Can you imagine that, an obivious thing as a change in the color of the medication!! They don’t know

There is one in P/mth hospital, “”
that woman just so ignorant and fool of herself!!!

Nurses on the island are nothing but unprofeesional!!!

i think when people choose these professions they must realise that they are making a commitment to being the servants of the public. if you donot have the patience, understanding and compassion for and with sick people please choose another profession. There are some really nice nurses but there are quite a bit of some not too nice ones.just as there are some good patients and there are just some real terrible ones.

p.s the casualty department is for emergencies, and therfor the service there should be executed more expediciously.to have a sick child and to be sitting out there for hours waiting will get any parent angry,to be in excrutiating pain an sitting out there will get anybody totally annoyed, trust me i doh belive people coming to sit there for nothing. dont get me wrong this is no reason to attack the nurses verbally. another thing is that why do they put the newly trained/inexperienced nurses in this department?they are not able to handle the pressure of this department.

Oh yeah, I agree with this woman, and sadly, it is not only the nurses—some of DA’s doctors just need to go away!! I sympathize with them, because their pay remains stagnant, and when they did receive a raise, it was so small that it was insignificant, BUT, that should not compromise their duties as health advocates! The patient should ALWAYS get top notch care, because, as humans, we operate on ‘thin strings!’ Finally, there’s always hope in every situation, and if a nurse or doctor can administer that–it might just be the only remedy necessary for recovery!

but how can the main hospital on the island casualty department have one dr on call at a time nah.its really frustrating to go tho the casualty department and sit there for hours and hours to be attended too.i’m not blaming the nurses cause some of them just really try.when you go there you have to see the nurse first then u have to go back outside to sit and wait to see the doctor.trust me that is a long wait to see that doctor eh.night or day. and doh talk about if there is an emergency like say an accident.

You all Dominicans are getting healthcare free, you should not complain. If you had to go to the emergency room in the US you would be waiting for hours even days unless if you came in unresponsive or with life-threatening injuries. And to top it off your hospital bill will be thousands of dollars. So be grateful and stop chastizing the nurses and doctors. The government probably need to ensure that citizens pay for healthcare because it is not cheap.

They did not screen the nurses well. Remember the gimmick “We are training 200 nurses….” Well its not the quantity, it is the quality and character that counts. Some of the Cuban trained are good, some are TERRIBLE. Nurse Denise Edwards would serve the needs of Dominica better at nursing school than at DSC. We need that discipline in training.

It is my oppinion that every government worker should have a NAME TAG or BADGE that can be read easily from a distance of at least 4 feet.

We need to know who it is we are talking about when we make our complaints and also when we are giving our compliments.

Too many times Peter is paying for Paul in these situations.

Hats off to the nurses and ward aids in the maternity ward of PMH. They made my stay very pleasant and comfortable!

Some nurses and doctors need to stop discussing patient’s personal information with their friends and family I know of one nurse and and one doctor who does it all the time. They both have been warned about it and they still continue. I feel ill one day and went to that specific doctor before I reached in my house my husband could have told me what was wrong with me and everything the doctor and I spoke about.

My god such rave reviews for our nurses. Things must be really bad at that hospital. I’ve never seen such degrading comments about your own people like this, it’s such a shame. I hope a couple of them are reading these cmments and change their attitude towards their fellow man.

I’m sorry people but I understand what the nurses are up against at PMH. When you constantly have to contend with essentially “ignorant” people who can’t comprehend much, it wears on you. However, that said, one who is a nurse in that situation, has to have the capacity of an angel, otherwise, it is not the profession for you. It is a very demanding job that demands a lot of compassion and patience to deal with an overpopulation of patients that are very needy and demanding. It is an emotionally draining job and requires extraordinary people that can handle the pressure and still be “up” and have a positive attitude.

Well Dominicans You all like to jump and grasp an opportunity when you can to BASH your own people.
You mean to tell me of all the the nurses that we have in Dominica, not one good thing you all can say about them? If so, then they need to close down the hospital then! I find Dominicans need to learn to apreciate and be greatful for the services that have been rendered to them. True there might me a few unprofessional, uncouth, harsh, unsympathetic, uncaring people working as nurses, but we also have some very good caring, loving, very professional nurses also. We should thank them and also complement them. And so, To all our Nurses who work so hard round the clock, THank you very much on behalf of the Dominican people.

As a nurse in the US I am disgusted by what I am reading. I always said I would love to go back home some day to work at the hospital but if i do, I guess the DA nurses will turn on me because I will be different and knowing Dominicans, they might say I think I’m all that. Nurses can’t treat patients like trash or not take what they are reporting seriously. Who taught these nurses? Were they taught that they are to care for people with compassion and humility. These nurses need to realize that they are not better than any of these patients and that caring for patients is a privilege.

      May 16, 2012

Well you need to pass Casualty to work just for one shift for you to get your share of demoralizing and verbal abuse for telling patients they have to wait their turn because someone else is more urgent or because you are working with a slow doctor and you are getting all the blame when they are not being tended to,for me to really see if you will still have all that humility and compassion. No matter how docile you want to be,when people start to curse you on your mother and reach on man you doh have and they start making all these derogatory statements,it must get to you after a while. The more you try to help people, the more they turn and kick you.

Thank you my Friend!!! Dominicans DO NOT utilize their Health centers. They come to casualty for any and every thing, when it is supposed to be an EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT!!

I sat outside casualty one afternoon and the nurse came to the front desk to announce that they had an emergency tending to and they will be out as soon as they are done with the patient.

About 30 minutes, You know people started making noise!!! Comments were made like, if the person dying let them die, come and check those alive ones outside!!!

We talk about the health system and the attitudes of nurses and Drs but we do not talk about how we frustrate the health professionals.

I have heard of people who threaten the nurses and doctors. Who say things like “if i had my gun i would …..all u!!!” And we expect to get 100% care after threatening dem people? ALL YOU STUPID MAN??

It’s called professionalism, regardless of what patients say or do it is your responsibility as a nurse to act with professionalism. It’s not just in DA that patients act badly, In the US, nurses are being spat on,poop bucket sent on them some want to fight you. But regardless they still have to be treated with respect. When my patients want to give me a hard time I let them know that if they want respect they have to show respect because it goes both ways. Most of the time in a couple hours these patients are apologizing for their behavior. I’m still Dominican I would survive just fine at casualty.

  14. Really???
    May 15, 2012

To be honest…….If I really pour out what’s in my heart on this post, DNO wont post it!!

I will begin by saying that in all professions, there are the good ones and the bad ones. Yes, I agree that some of the Nurses attitudes are not professional but what about the clients?

I visited the casualty department a few weeks ago and there was this man who was having stomach pain. His wife/girlfriend said to the nurse, “nurse, Dr not going to see him man? the nurse answer, you have to hold on my dear, only one doctor working here and he is seeing someone now”

The girl and the man started giving the nurse “nuff LANG SAL” on her mother and all. This was totally uncalled for. They were making comments like ‘Is so all you does let people die in that place’ etc etc
The nurse never answered, she just went on to the next patient.

Majority of Dominicans have no manners and are plain MALKASAY! Yes the nurse is a professional but she was a human long before she became a nurse.

Alot of you guys come to the hospital with your preconceived ideas because of someone else’s experience. So before nurse or doctor talk to all you serious, all you talking offense.
EDUCATE YOURSELVES AND START BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR HEALTH!!!

While I sympathise the with the negative experiences of the majority of commentators, my family and I appear to have been fortunate on the four occasions (the last just a few days ago) when, during the course of the last eight years, we have needed urgent treatment at Accident and Emergency. Without exception, the nurses and doctors have been caring and efficient.

As a nurse i must say this comments are interesting plenty of we nurses have forgotten about our code of ethics. Many people think nurses making plenty money, well i can tell you that’s not so. patients are entitled to a pleasant environment not a place where your care taker behaves like a pig.I my follow nurses read these comments cause its very disappointing. Not all nurses are the same. my policy is i treat every patient like my mother or my father.

    May 15, 2012

As a Dominican nurse, living elsewhere, I am quite disappointed to read the negative comments made about nurses. At the same time I take these comments with a grain of salt as I have found that many of the people who comment here tend to see things in the worse possible light.Remember the days when nurses/people were treated with respect? I talk to nurses who I supervise and I encourage excellent Customer Service regardless of the patient/family/doctors/other nurses behaviors. Ethical work habits is paramount.I have found it to be true in all arenas – smile and the world smiles with you. The hardest person responds positively to a kind word or action. The priviledge to care for others should never be taken lightly. As a nurse you are God’s hands/voice. How can you not treat someone with kindness. Unfortunately we have compromised our standards giving way to whatever we feel that we will get away with. God bless the new matron, it will take some effort to get things back on track but it is doable. Let them know of your expectations, put them on a 30 day Action Plan. Have team building exercises. Provide positive reenforcement for appropriate behaviors or excellent service to patients/doctors/family and coworkers. Give awards for positive changes.Select “Employee of the Month”. All is not lost. DNO you can pass on my email address to the Matron. I am a Director of Nursing in the US; I can help if asked to. I would be honoured to, it is my patriotic duty.

ediquette when engaging with customers. I recall the problem have been address already and it seems that no ones is taking heeding. It appears
that you are at their mercy or doing you a favor , when is quiet the opposite. We are bring the customers bringing the business to them which the help to pay their salaries so we demand better treatment.

@LIMINGLUCY exactly did they not tell you that you are coming from overseas?

My dad had a stroke and admitted in 2006 the same day my brother flew in from Canada guess what – when he went there – he was not happy. My dad’s niece a retired Nurse in Canada she was in Dominica at the time and had to ask to see the Hospital’s Director unknowing to them she was a nurse on the same ward back in the 70s before moving to Canada.

My dad fell twice the same night a fellow patient had to get him up- he cried help the never came and the nurses never told us instead when my brother inquired he got what was coming for him.

They had the guts to be telling my brother that “when you all go overseas and come back you all coming back with an attitude” at the same time they drank all the juice my mom brought for my dad.

My dad knew what happened at the hospital HE REFUSED TO EVER GO BACK

I certainly hope that the health professionals are taking note. There is not one positive comment made about the nurses.
ALL nurses I have come in contact with are extremely Malcasey, Rude, Uncouth, common and disrespectful.
They don’t realize that they degrade the profession.
Personally, Nurses should be paid based on their performance, any nurse who has had repeated complaints from patients due to their attitude should be fired! Go and sell fish, because its your fish market attitude that stinks.

Well Nurse Thomas, I am so happy you brought this up. It is quite appalling the attitude of ‘some’ nurses at the PMH. I have had the priviledge of meeting the best and the worse. I have heard a certain red skinned nurse from the San Sauveur area tell a patient ‘just pass by me for me to kick you in your a’ This same nurse have been known for her very nasty attitude towards patients and visitors. My disappointment is in the system. Even if you report these happenings, nothing is done and so the habit continues. There needs to be a deterrent. There needs to be consequences to these actions.

All the time the nurse was spitting in a trash bin by the table..After a few minutes she looked at the thermometer and said the child had no fever..What!!! the father said..my child forehead is on fire and you are saying she has not a fever!! come he said, touch her forehead which up to that time the nurse had never touch the child.she touched the child head and walked out silently and came back with another thermometer.. still spitting in the the bin by the table.. this time the thermometer read 100+..the nurse casually said, ooh that is the second thermometer that is not working I see.. man, what incompetency and unprofessional..

I agree with nurse Thomas. If one has no love for people do not join the nursing profession. Do not join just for a job. I remember my dad had this terminal illness & there was a particular nurse who would come in & not even greet him mainly because she figured that he should be at his home waiting to die since they could do nothing more for him. One day the nurse made a remark to another patient saying “you self should not be here” but I know it was not the patient she was referring to. One thing I know all of us will have our time. This is one thing I am sure of. A patient with a terminal illness, in so much pain, is this the right attitude for a senior nurse. I am sure she would not be able to do this in any U.S. hospital. All the guilty ones, change, change, change. A patient should not be your friend to give them quality care. Happy Nurses’ week.

There are a few good nuses. I can mention Nurse Lloyd and Nurse Julien when they worked in the district. TYhey were wonderful.
There are many nurses who need to change their attitude. They need to understand that they are giving a service and ned to treat people with respect and dignity. If one cannot be nice, repectful and tolerant they should not be in the nursing profession.

The nurses really need to change..I myself have been victimized by the nurse at both the pmh and the health centre..I remeber this time I had an issue with my toe and a supervisory nurse actually told my sister and I why is it the hospital the one to deal with my issue and argued with us that they are not going to help and that we should go by a private doctor.how does she know who can afford to go by a private doctor and who can’t. She even refused to lend another nurse her pen to write a referral for me. Its like they believe the hopital is there’s.and its not only wat they say but its how they address you. As if because they are nurses they are sooo much better then you. I remeber another incident at the health centre where a nurse told a patient if is satan that send her go back where she came from, and that same nurse indirectly curesed and as you would say’ throw talk’ for an elderly couple. They really need to be patient and be empathetic and also need to become passionate towards their jobs. If you are not passionate about your job how will you do it properly.

SOME NURSES SEE THE NURSING PROFESSION AS AN ENTITY TO EARN A FAST CASH BUT THE EMPATHY AND SYMPATHY WHICH SHOULD BE PART OF THE PACKAGE IS MISSING. THIS IS HOW I SEE IT.

Not only the nurses but some of the so-called doctors too. Like the one from marigot who turned away the former Chairman of the village council when he went to her at the clinic. After she turned him away he fell. This man went to the hospital and never returned.
These kinds of so-called doctors need to be disciplined. His family should have taken action against her. Hope she never comes back to work in that community.Doctors get sick too. How would they want to be treated?

Every business sector in D’ca needs an attitude change. The minute one lands a job in Dominica, it gets to his/her head and as such whenever one is “served” that one gets a side of attitude as a bonus- no choice.

Generally, there is an urgency for good customer service training programs in the country. Although one of the solution is ostensibly more competition among businesses; however, culture may have a part to play – so if change must come it must start with the individual.

Is there a difference between a nurse and a doctor?
Too many Dominican nurses behave as if they are doctors. They need to know their place.

I for one totally agree with this….I wont go so far as to say that all the nurses have bad attitudes, but there are quite a few who need to learn that the way they deal with patients needs to be more professional and cordial…..Just last week I went to the RFA hospital in Portsmouth and simply asked the casualty nurse on duty whether or not she could take my medical records book so that I could wait and be further assessed. She looked through it, asked me how come the doctor didnt write that I had to come for a follow up visit and handed me back my book. I tried explaining that I did not know the Doctor was supposed to write that I had to return, I cannot presume to tell the Doctor how to do his job, only that he tol me I must return for follow up on that day….to make a long story short, she took my book about an hour later when she got tired of hearing me tell everyone how rough, rude, disrespectuful and hasty she had been towards me. As I enetered casualty, she started immediately to tell me in a not so pleasant tone that they work on shifts and she wasnt rude. And by the way……it wasnt a junior nurse………from her appearance, and the way she carried herself you could easily tell that this nurse had been in the profession for several years.

SO who do you want to make the determination as to what is a priority, the patients? Everybody who comes into the emergency department thinks their case is a priority, otherwise they would wait to see their doctor.

Every emergency department has a triage nurse who sees you on entering the department. They make an assessment and decide who should be seen first. The emergency department does not work on a first come first served basis. Every case has to be priortized.

Nurse Thomas I REALLY hope they have listened to you and if they were not there that the message will be passed on. These young nurses of today (not all but alot of them) need that love, caring attitude and tenderness especially to patience coming in to seek treatment. If we could attend to our own selves they WOULD NOT have a job today. Some of them are there just because they can get a quick job but as to having that skill they dont. Time and time again people complain and its not just because they want to. All I’m saying every dog is strong in its own yard.
