Cuba has pledged to assist the Ministry of Health here conduct research to address critical issues of health.
That undertaking has been given through a new technical cooperation agreement signed between Roseau and Havana.
The pact initialled by Health Minister Julius Timothy and Cuban Ambassador Jauna Elena Ramos, also commits Cuba to assist in training to develop Dominica’s Human Resource for Health, and repairs and maintenance of medical equipment.
Ten Dominicans can also expect to receive specialist training in Cuba for the next two years, through the arrangement.
By September (2012), five health care providers are expected to commence specialist training in Cuba in the areas of Paediatrics, Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease, Podiatry and Oncology, according to the Ministry of Health.
It says the overall objective of the new cooperation agreement is to “strengthen the human resource capacity and the overall health infrastructure in order to meet the growing health needs of the population”.
Dominica’s Ministry of Health has been benefiting from technical assistance from the Republic of Cuba since 1979.
The Cubans are already providing specialized services in the areas of Intensive Care, Gastroenterology, Pathology, General Surgery, Radiology, Biomedical Engineer, Laboratory Services and Nursing Services.
Health officials say under the Cuban technical cooperation agreement, Dominica has seen a reduction in the number of patients referred to intensive care treatment out of state, and a reduction in the cost to government.
They have also seen improvements in the diagnostic services available at the Primary Health Care Services.
I feel that this is great! The healthcare system here in Dominica needs any and all help that it can get. I can’t believe in this day and age that you can go to the hospital (both in Roseau and Portsmouth) and there is no water, soap, paper towel or toilet paper! Everyone knows that the first and most important step in prevention of spread of infection and disease is handwashing. But that can’t happen since there are no supplies for patients and visitors! I could go on and on about things that need help in the healthcare system here in Dominica but won’t. Just say thank you for any and all help we can get….
thank u cuba and people sayin that u bad
Viva Dominica, Viva Cuba!
Great going. Thank you, Cuba!
A massive BIGG UP to Cuba and the Castro lead administration. Training, assistance, technical support, scholarships, health care, and much more. No matter how much they try to hold you down, your tentacles will continue to spread. America is not the world, and the rest of the world is bigger than America. Kudos and bouquets to all the Cuban specialist in Dominica and elswhere around the world.
