Dominica among top five in world alcohol consuming countries

Dominica has been ranked among the top five global alcohol consuming countries by the World Health Organization (WHO) in a report released earlier this year.

The global study took a look at alcohol consumption, which is measured in terms of pure ethyl alcohol to compensate for the varying strengths of beer, wine and spirits. A liter bottle of wine with 10 percent alcohol, for example, would be only 0.1 liter of pure alcohol.

According to the report Dominica ranked fifth per capita in the consumption of spirits downing some 7.20 liters per year, while Caribbean neighbour St. Lucia ranked fourth. A spirit is described as a ‘distilled alcohol.’  The alcoholic content of a ‘distilled spirit’ is higher than that of beer or wine.

Interestingly Dominica did not appear on the radar of the other categories in the study, namely beer and wine consumption.

The other countries making the top five in the spirit consumption category are Republic of Moldova (number one), Reunion (number two) and the Russian Federation (number three).

Worldwide, some 2.5 million people die each year from the harmful use of alcohol, accounting for about 3.8 percent of all deaths, according to previous WHO data.

Steps to curb alcohol use also feature three times in WHO’s top 10 “best buys” for public health policies to reduce the burden of chronic diseases, which kill 36 million people a year worldwide.

thats bull cuz im in vincy now and there ppl drink 100 times more than dominicans or lucians

      May 13, 2014

they might drink more in total but per capita we drink more. remember we have less than 70 thousand dominicans on island, and if we drink even half of what some large countries drink that is a lot for our small population size, vincy and dem places have more residents n stuff so it doesn’t look like much. is like having 3 blue marbles in 10 red ones as opposed to 3 blue marbles in 100. you will see it better in 10. they not checkin total consumption

This is pure nonsense ! How did they figure that ?
what is the sample ? How did they do this survey ? For what period ? did they survey the entire world ? I can think of some other WI territories that consume more. Take this with a grain of salt.

You see, Marijuana is not the problem!

    • March 17, 2015

People who want marijuana use the damage being done by alcohol for an excuse to overlook the harm done by marijuana.

It seems these folks have lost the ability to be objective.

They want to ignore a harmful product or practice because here are other products or practices that are even more harmful.

They would have us believe that the police should not arrest a man who robs a grocery store because some men rob banks.

It is like they think a doctor should not treat a child with small pox because there are children with cancer who need care.

Tobacco, alcohol, marijuana should all be illegal. People need to be warned about the dangers of every harmful substance, and offered help in overcoming any of these addictions. The fact that a person’s drug of choice is not he only dangerous drug in society does not mean it should be ignored.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.

It is true about Dominica being number 5, I am so surprised it wasn’t higher, everywhere you turn is an old wooden rum shops, no toilet facilities the place smelling of urine.

What does the government and people in authority expect people to do especially the younger ones, no one thinks of opening a Caribbean Movie House, no recreation park for the youngsters to free up, nowhere to go except a “sewo” all the time, is not everyone that likes to go to listen and dance to that “ole” kind of music all the time.

Open a movie house and BAN ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTES.
Put a ban on people drinking and driving, the policemen drink by the court house so what is expected.DUMMY-IN-CA IS A BIG JOKE. THE WORST IN THE CARIBBEAN.

This is the most rediculous report ever to come from the World Health Organization. Against what population was the survey conducted? When you consider the population of Russia, England and the other alcohol consuming countries (with millions of people), against Dominica, St. Lucia, with such a small population, what do you expect the survey to reveal? It’s obvious, we will be ranked very high.

That’s only because we drink stronger stuff! What I see happening in the UK with alcohol consumption, Dominica can never beat that! Of course they would put it in categories so that the UK would never come up. There is a major problem with alcohol in London, pubs everywhere filled with beer drinkers who down pint after pint after pint. Women are a disgrace to themselves – drunk, loose, vomiting in the streets every weekend after weekend. Statistics can be turned any how to suit! We do drink strong stuff but at least don’t have the effects of what my eyes seeing in England, except for the few womiel that we know off

    July 24, 2012

Two things that seems to be eluding alot of the readers is that this report is a result of a “PER CAPITA” analysis. For it’s population Dominica is amongst the top five alcohol consuming countries in the world. I for one do not find that hard to believe.

Secondly there is no mention made of alcoholics. Dominica still remains one of the most functional countries in terms of job retention. I am not saying that there are no alcoholics in Dominica, but at the same time Dominicans generally do not let their alcohol consumption take away from their other, more important responsibilities.

Take some time and read through the article. It also states that Dominicans particularly do not consume wine and beer. This is another fact. There is nothing wrong or degrading about the article.

how else can we ignore whats going on,,,,,drink and forget you worries

    • Francisco Telemaque
      July 24, 2012

      Nothing eluded me!

I read it the first time and commented, and concluded that unless they are talking per capita, Dominica does not fit into their findings, someone responded to my comments and suggest I read before I comment, because they are talking per capita.

However, in the original disclosure written by DNO, the word ” per capita ” is not mentioned, not written; so why would one suggest they are talking per capita?

And even if they are talking pert capita, let me show you the bunk in it.

They rated your country number five, we are talking per capita now, in this case the population of the countries mentioned must be taken into consideration, so how came that St Lucia, ranks fourth; and what they term the Russian Federation first or third wherever they place it.

When you look at the Russian Federation if there was one, I would expect the United States and Canada would be involved also.

That is why it makes no sense whatsoever, except to those who wrote the report.

By the way if you take a trip to Las Vegas right now, you will find more people than all of Dominica’s population on the Strip right now, this very day: some with long tall glasses of beer wine, and all different type of hard alcohol in hand drinking and getting drunken, and that goes on day and night!

For Dominica to fit into any category here, all of us Dominicans would have to be involve in the consumption of rum, and surly we all do not indulge in alcohol beverages.

      Unfortunately I do!

  59. Observer
    July 24, 2012

While I am skeptical about the accuracies of these reports, I know a lot of alchohol is consumed by Dominicans. And a per capita basis they might well be reasobly close. The report is talking about pure alcohol NOT volume of alchoholic beverages. I grew up next to a rum shop and I know these men drink hard liquor like water, but again these hard drinkers only made up a small portion of the community. I live in the US now and I think the most common businesses are churches and liquor stores (and yes I believe churches are businesses in USA), but I hardly see people drunk on the streets, but I have seen many in the clubs, which is typically periodic social drinkers. The strong persistent drinkers could have been doing it at their homes, and were not recorded in WHO statistics.

    • July 24, 2012

      @Observer

I agree with your line of reasoning. I too, am skeptical about the details of this news article, and I see your point, pertaining to when and where people partake of alcoholic drinks, in countries like the USA and Canada for example

I live in Toronto,Canada–not that I am involve in that kind of social habit at all. But it is quite clear that those who drink heavily, they do so at home, because those people are alcoholics, who believe that the drink can soothe their mental pain.

I know for a fact that most men in our Dominica would rather go out to drink, instead of staying at home to drink until they pass out on their sofar or somewhere in the house–because most of them are not alcoholics–but they love to socialize.

My father and my brothers, uncles and nephews, and most men that I knew in Giraudel when I was growing up there are my witnesses. The women of my people do not partake of alcoholic drinks to that extent.

In the first place, most people who drink outside of their homes, in places like Toronto for sure, they do so at a night club or a social get together; those people would have to drive home–for places like Toronto is or are huge place; nobody can walk home from a drinking party, as most people can do in Dominica.

Nut the police are on guard, in search for drunk drivers–and they do not tolerate those drivers who are caught with alcohol on their breathe, for many people are killed because of drunk driving.

And so people are very careful about their alcohol intake at social gatherings unless they decide to take a taxi home.

Still for all countries like Canada maintain a home for alcoholics all over the country–that is how research should decide what countries have the higher level of alcohol intake than another.

Even if Dominicans can buy alcholic drinks from most shopping places there, I still cannot see how we belong to the top five among countries of alcohol intake of the “world” Say what!

That is a serious health problem in the making and the entire society going to pay for it. No wonder we are not producing anything. How can the workers be productive when they are recovering from hang overs 24/7. Long time I suspect the country running on Western Union/Money Gram – remittance. A large % of our young men are living in a daze and growing a gut

    July 24, 2012

Alarming, but not surprising. If you look on Face book pics of young Dominicans, say, between 17 and 28, most of them have a drink in their hand or mouth.
“Worldwide, some 2.5 million people die each year from the harmful use of alcohol, accounting for about 3.8 percent of all deaths, according to previous WHO data.” Time to ease up on the weed! If they study weed as well (and I believe they have but won’t release the results), they won’t find one related death. We rank really high, man. Rastafari has been preaching about this legal drug for many decades now and it fell on deaf ears. Who is WHO?

You know I believe something is wrong with that report: how did they determine that; are they thinking in terms of per capita?

We need to remember that we have a very small population in comparisons to places such as Europe; there are places in Europe where on any single day or night of any week if one adds up the total number of people found in Clubs drinking and consuming alcohol, one will find they total more than seventy thousand people.

By the way those are people who goes out to drink, do we know how many remain at home passed out in a drunken state?

The situation in Germany is so bad, that they have special hospitals, which treats alcoholics only, perhaps the WHO is not aware of that.

Perhaps they should review what is happening in England also, what about Denmark, those who do not know may believe that crap, but this is a very narrow world, and there is nothing one need to find out on their own they can’t find out. False information usually comes from organized religion , and other organizations too!

Because WHO made that claim does not make what they say true; nor factual

Someone should ask them to prove their theory, tell us how long their research took, and the method they use in gathering their information prior to coming to their conclusion!

It is my opinion that the report is flawed ( defective in a sense ) in every sense of the word, and I render it a very week report.

    Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

    • Observer
      July 24, 2012

My friend read before you comment nor. The report clearly stated “per capita”. You that is the only way Dominica could rank so high.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        July 24, 2012

Even at that my friend that report is still flawed, because you see, them are concentrating on hard alcohol, fact is beer is brewed in Dominica, I do not know what the volume rum been distilled on the island these days, less than in the 1950’s I assume.

So it might be reasonable to think that we would be drinking more beer in the country which to me would be more economical than imported whiskey, and wine.

If you have the ability to analyze it do so on your own reason it out before you accept the crap people talk about your country!

Let the WHO present to you the scientific method they use in collecting the facts on that which allowed them to derive at their theory.

You cannot form a theory by simply noticing people partying at a dance, or people on a family and friends picnic, drinking some white rum.

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahaahhahaha!

        Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

      • July 24, 2012

At observer, I used a point that you made after this one, to express my opinion of this news article.

But now, I am not sure about what you were saying above; because of your objection to Francisco’s, opinion here.

Per capita or not, I do not see how Dominicans can have a heavier intake of alcohol than those countries in the world with almost half a billion, not to mention those with more than that– people in population. Dominican are not even a 100,000 people.

How does the comparison from one to one, or each to each, become effective through a world survey, with Dominica being part of this world survey?

As I mentioned above, and so did Francisco, did the people of that research check with the number of places maintained for rehabilitation of alcoholics in the certain countries of the world compared to Dominica?

That is why I agree with Fransisco! This research is fallible; it is indeed a flawed survey.

Not that I am not encouraging my fellow Dominicans to continue with their heavy intake of alcoholic drinks–those of us who do so.

I tend to agree with you totally. This report is misleading at best and even if it was reported by WHO, does not make it credible. With a little more details as to their research methods, I will be more convinced but for now I view this as propaganda and poor handling of research.

      July 24, 2012

Francisco, As usual you are taking cheap shots from the cheap sits. Have you read the actual report from which this news item was obtained? Where is your evidence that the WHO study is flawed? You have not even taken the time to carefully read this news item. So while you are certainly entitled to your opinion, you should at the very least offer an informed opinion.

      • July 24, 2012

        @Farner’s son

I read the article with full understanding. And so I do not see what is cheap about Francisco’s report–he has a good point of objection.

Dominica cannot be compared and rated above all of those mega countries of the “world” in regards to population and functions–of whatever. The report is about a conclusion of research done in countries of “the world”. Please consider that!

When we talk about Per Capita, we are talking about “one” to “one” or each to each; head to head–according to my understanding–I don’t think that I am wrong, and we are talking about people’s behaviour or function.

I have calculated our “Dominicans” as one person–through her population of 70,000– to the USA, being 4100 persons–through her population of 300,000,000. Divide 300,000,000 by 70,000 you will see that I am right.

How do we compare what one person–like Dominica–can do with what 4100 persons–like the USA can do? There will always be no comparison! Those kinds of research are always fallible, I will not accept their conclusion for my Dominica–no matter what the stature of this conclusion is.

On a serious note when did the WHO change that report? Months ago they had Luxembourg in 1st place, Ireland 2, Hungary, Moldova, Czech Rep, Germany, Britan etc in that order, nowhere in that report was any caribbean island much less Dominica featured. So unless they are now ranking Dominica against other Caribbean islands,as part of the Caribbean Basin, or using population for a further ranking I want to know how they came up with this? This is the kind of stuff that can drive me to drink!

Well, we really do not need a report to show us that we are massive consumers of alcoholic drinks. A very recent worrying trend is the number of young persons who gather «on the block» Sunday to Sunday to drink their lives away.

In the end, every Dominican pays for the bad habits of the heavy drinkers when our taxes go to paying the costs associated with heavy drinking. So, i say…make the drinkers pay for their habits: Tax them!

This is not in the least bit surprising. Last weekend I was apprising a young lady of the qualities of Dominican men. They work hard, take care of their families, bring their checks home to take care of their responsibilities, are respectful, honor their parents, but if there is one drawback (if it can be called that, they love their waters. Especially on a weekend after a long week of work.

One thing I will add is that for the most part, Dominicans are responsible drinkers for the most part. I do not drink and have not done so for years, but when I do hang out with my compatriots here in the U.S, they rarely cause any ruckus. They like their liquor and that’s about it.
