Don’t drink and drive – official warns

Dominicans are being encouraged to be cautious and to make health choices this Easter holidays.

That call is coming from the head of the National Drug Abuse Prevention Unit Jacinta Bannis.

According to her, the public needs to be cognizant of the dangers of drug and alcohol.

“The sales of alcohol to minors and to persons who are already drunk are offenses punishable by law. Drinking and driving is a deadly combination therefore motorists are being encouraged not to drink and drive,” she advised.

She said those who will be drinking alcohol are being asked to have a sober designated driver.

“Let us as a community support each other in best practices, as we continue to be response as a means of reducing the demands for drugs in the nature island,” she said.

I suggest responsible persons with legitimate driver’s license should volunteer as prominent drivers to other persons who wants to party over the weekend. A name should also be provided to these designated drivers with acess ( mobile phones) so that they can be reached. A number should be made available to the public ( these drivers should be committed to the cause)

during the weekend party goers will be having fun by which I mean ( drink, dance and food) they can call these responsible drivers to take them home. thus preventing any accidents by driving themselves while under the influeunce of too much alcohol consumption.

this is how we should act as a close knit community during these times, so as to prevent our loved ones, families friends, nieghbors from falling victim to harm during these festive periods.

    thanks

Cello, I think, in the spirit of being a tight knit community a best practice is to help each person be responsible enough to be responsible drinkers and not to drunk that they are a out of control that they can’t drive. If that is taken into consideration not only will such persons avert accidents from drunk driving but also the financial, moral, health, and family burden of drunkenness. Let us not enable deviant behaviors and make allowance for them, but challenge such persons to be mature and responsible.

It seems to me that it would be best to get more people who are part of the problem to become part of the solution rather that adding more work on the few who are volunteering and giving their life to help and serve other. They have families too. and they have to enjoy life too.

Merely telling the driving public that they should not drink and drive will not work. This statement must be followed by police officers enforcing the law and the use of Breathlizers. Setting up police check points on major holidays and weekends will go a long in creating safer roads for the general public.

They should not even be drinking because that’s not what the Easter holiday is for. If we notice, Jesus and his disciples only took a ‘sip’ of red wine at the last supper- not vodka, appleton, gyn, etc. or weed or anything like that. They were not fete-ing or sewo-ing either.
Stay focused on the significance of ‘Easter’.
