Males dominate HIV infection in Dominica

Coordinator of the National HIV and AIDS Response Programme, Julie Frampton, has revealed that males continue to dominate the list of persons becoming infected with HIV in Dominica.

According to Frampton despite the “feminisation” of the epidemic in other parts of the region, this is not the case in Dominica. “In the rest of the region, we see a feminisation of the epidemic, in Dominica we do not see that we still have a male dominated epidemic,” she pointed out. “Over 70 percent of the 396 reported cases are men and the age group most affected is our 25-49 age group and that remains the most affected.”

Frampton noted out that 20 new cases were documented in 2012, 15 of which were male.

She added that the age group most affected last year was the older age group ranging from 30 to 50 years which may result in a shift in priorities for the response program.

“In 2012 the number of positives came from the older age group ranging 30 to 50 years, so in terms of targeting intervention, do we need to shift our priorities? Are our young people heeding the call and using their condoms more? This is the data that we not have to try to find,” she noted.

According to the strategic plan in Dominica men who have sex with men and their male and female partners, young people, commercial sex workers, and prisoners are most at risk for contracting HIV.

Meanwhile, Frampton also disclosed that Dominica should be proud to boast of its 0.75% prevalence rate in HIV.

According to her Dominica has less than 1 percent epidemic rate which she described as “significant.”

The main problem here is that the older men and women with these viruses are sometimes the popular names with all the money and cars, who in turn get th eye of the younger generation…

Let’s be honest all these “internet/blackberry children” will jump at the chance to sex a man with a bmw or suv no knowing it is these men who have the viruses spreading around….

The poor farmer out their struggling to have money in his pocket so women wouldnt take him on…but his blood will be the cleanest along with his heart

HIV tests should be done islandwide to derive at the true status. that is in every ministry, private sector too. statistics donot have all the information. I personally know some persons with the epidemic and never went up for treatment. consider that miss Frampton

how do you know that they have it? did you see the results? and if they tested positive here, it would automatically be sent to the database as part of the public health policy.

actually what it says is that men are more promiscuous than women thus increasing their chances of contracting a disease. this is not 1985. AIDS is not a gay disease. In fact more heterosexuals have contracted the disease than homosexuals.

you should not be allowed to procreate and if you have done so already and the children live with you, then you should be arrested for passing stupidity on to minors i.e. contributing to the delinquency of a minor

yes. the antiretroviral drugs are given free of charge to HIV/AIDS patients

    • Tina
      February 27, 2013

Yes if you enroll in the hospital based care program then the medication for HIV can currently be accessed at no cost to the patient it is paid for by the Global fund, long may it last….However not everyone who is positive needs meds and those who start them MUST take them as prescribed or they can get resistant. Send anyone who needs information to the National Unit on Hanover Street. You can get a test there too and have results in an hour.

Coordinator of the National HIV and AIDS Response Programme, Julie Frampton, stated the following:
“In the rest of the region, we see a feminisation of the epidemic, in Dominica we do not see that we still have a male dominated epidemic.”

This is the data that we not have to try to find,” she noted. 396 reported cases are men. The jist of this article is very confusing….

      February 27, 2013

Don’t be confused. She pointed out, “70% of 396 reported cases are men, and are in the 25-49yrs. age group”.
In a nut-shell it seems like they are passing the virus on-to their likes more than the opposite. I’m afraid these numbers may not depict the real picture. But that is left to be proven.

In Dominica we do not see that.We still have a male dominated epidemic.

You mean in this day and age and the amount of information there is out there, men over the age of 25 are still being infected with HIV?

I can understand a teenager who by nature is impulsive, allowing his hormones to get the better of him, but adult men aught to know better.

Wrap it up. If you willie does not respond to the condom, go to your doctor and have him prescribe Viagra or Cialis. There is no need to put your life at risk for a disease which you can prevent.

    • Not a herd follower
      February 27, 2013

Clearly, you don’t understand why doctors prescribe Viagra and Cialis.

    • Reader
      February 28, 2013

Viagra and Cialis are supposed to do what now? Protect against HIV? Yeah right. These medications are for erectile dysfunction and do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

      • Jim Hendrix
        February 28, 2013

“Reader” you obviously have a problem with comprehension. OK let me go over it again. Some men have trouble maintaining an erection when they are putting on a condom. Therefore they can take medication to increase their erection so that they can wear the condom without loss of erection. Is it clear now. You should understand what you “read” before you respond.

WE NEED TO BE MORE CAREFUL ABOUT HOW WE LIVE OUR LIVES

    • Concerned
      February 28, 2013

We do….We are only passing through this life, so we need to think of ways to enjoy life but to do it in a pure manner. At the end of our rope we will have a lot to answer for…..We should keep in mind that our bodies are supposed to be temples of God.

      • January 3, 2014

If people want to eliminate HIV/AIDS let them stop fornicating and buggering.

No program of prevention is complete without teaching God’s moral laws. Anything less is simply not honest. To put the Divine code for sexual behavior into practice would end the “epidemic” in a very short time.

Before the sexual “revolution” of the 50’s and 60’s there was no AIDS. The other sexually transmitted infections did exist but they were not epidemics and they were non-existent among those who followed God’s plan for marriage and His moral code.

If they would simply expel the sexual nastiness from their lives the existing HIV/AIDS cases would run their course in a few years and the disease would be stamped out.

But of course it is not politically correct to tell people this. The PC thing to do is teach the public how to enjoy breaking God’s laws (Romans 1:26,27, 1 Corinthians 6:9,10, Galatians 5:19-21, 1 Timothy 1:9,10, Jude vs. 7) without getting caught (read infected). But there is always a price to pay for violating the Word of God. Read Galatians 6:7,8.

When people do get infected the only right and proper thing to do is to compassionately provide comfort and the very best medical care available in a non-judgmental way. We thank God for those who are doing this, and all who are offering hope by letting the public know of the progress that has been made in research and the available drugs.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.
