Health professional Maria Moise is Dominica’s Nurse of the Year.
Moise and several other nurses on the island were recognized at a ceremony on Sunday that climaxed a month of activities organized by the Dominica Nurses Association.
Nurse of the Year Moise has been described by her colleagues as a health practitioner who has been a role model to primary health care, maintaining consistency and diligence in the execution of her duties.
Six other nurses received Management Awards. The six are Joan Deserve, Catherine Hypolite, Diane Graham, Vanya Bruney, Zahera Andrew and Terillia Ravaliere.
A special management award for dedication and hard work in secondary and primary health care went to Letitia Lestrade-Wyke and Florestine Lewis.
An appreciation award was given to the Principal Nursing Officer – Caesarina Ferrol, while an award for the appreciation of service as Nurse Anesthetist went to Dolores Sanchez.
Nurse Lorry James took the most outstanding customer service award.
The featured speaker at the awards ceremony, High Court judge Bernie Stephenson Brooks, called on nurses to treat their patients with the “utmost care, respect and dignity”.
And Health Minister Julius Timothy reiterated that the government “remains committed to providing quality health care for all. In other to achieve this several initiatives have been taken in ensuring the improvements of the lives of or nurses”.
According to Timothy, the government in 2010 approved 94 nursing positions and implemented several measures geared at improving the nursing profession.
The function was also addressed by Acting Prime Minister Dr. Colin McIntyre.
