Ministry of Health hold consultation on strengthening the health system

The Ministry of Health convened the first in a series of consultations on “Strengthening the Health Systems and Engaging the Private Sector” on Thursday March 31, 2011, at the Garraway Hotel.

Stakeholders from both the Private and Health Sectors participated in the half day consultation to dialogue on priorities for technical assistance in health system strengthening and private sector engagement. They were to provide a rationale for improving the sustainability of HIV/AIDS programming and the health sector, and also to develop a framework for future collaboration between the health and private sectors

The stakeholders made group presentations on the following areas (1) the role the private sector currently plays in the health system in Dominica ;(2) what are the barriers and opportunities for greater engagement;(3) what the private sector sees as the assets of the health system and (4) the areas of the health system in Dominica which requires the most urgent attention.

The consultation was facilitated by members of the organization SHOPS (Strengthening Health Outcomes through Private Sectors) and funded by the USAID (United States for International Development) Agency

Commenting on the way forward, Sara Sulzbach, a facilitator of the consultation and a Private Sector HIV/AIDS Advisor of SHOP, plans to mobilize a team of experts to work with a group of people from the public health sector and the private sector in Dominica to formulate and make recommendations for action.

One way we can strengthen our Health Sytem is by employing specialized, trained Doctors – Doctors who are professionally trained and working in their specialites – not just General Doctors as we use to have before. Doctors who also have pursued a Master Program in Public Health is very essential also in strengthening our Health System. All nurses employed should be fully trained academically and on the job and should be eligible to sit the Registered Nurse exam set by the Caribbean Board of Heath Educators to become Registered Nurses.
