The Environmental Health Department of the Ministry of Health (MoH) is warning members of the public that they should immediately cease using the Roseau River, from the Bath Estate Bridge to the sea, because that section of the river is contaminated by sewage and other pollutants.
This, according to the Ministry, is due to damaged sewer lines below the Bath Estate Bridge and the Dominica/China Friendship Bridge.
Until further notice, no one should fish, bathe, swim, wash clothes and household utencil or collect water for the washing of vehicles on that section of the river.
The Ministry said DOWASCO is ‘working expeditiously to rectify the problem.
Bla bla bla. Everyone with an office position wants to pitch in. Before Erika sewage was being deposited in the Roseau river. Did the environmental people ever checked out the water quality before? %#@ No.
God point Zandoli. We must preserve our water sources. We do not want this to happen. http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2015/07/drought-5000-californians-dont-have-running-water . There should be a law which provides for people who litter and empty their waste into rivers to be arrested/charged. Unfortunately while the numbers may be small, there are still some buildings in Roseau and some other areas which do not have running water and proper sewage facilities in the 21st century. e.g. Although the area near the Roseau public cemetery, has a public shower and toilet facility, people sometimes still throw their waste into the cemetery. (Perhaps they could not get up to go to the facility in the rain at night..) Whatever the reason, that’s not good. The Toilet program (not a laughing matter) can target these people, or the building should be boarded up until that is done. This program is useful. We need to be very strict about hygiene.
If one is to look at the bright side (if there is any) of TS Erika is that the Roseau river got cleaned up. Let’s hope people do not use it as their dumping ground in the future.
…anyone for titiwi??
