Mother of ‘caged’ autistic child appeals for assistance

The cage

A 38-year-old mother of four is appealing for help for her 15-year-old son who is suffering from Autism.

Helen Carbon says she is “frustrated and don’t know where again to turn to” as she seeks help for her son Carvell Edwards who, one week ago, she had to  place in a cage.

“I have gone to everyone, Dr. Benjamin, (Health Minister) Julius Timothy, social welfare and all and no one seems to be able to give me peace of mind,” she said.

“The boy had to be housed in the cage because he damages and destroys everything in his way and is very disruptive in the neighborhood,” Carbon said almost in tears.

She explained that her son has had that illness from age three and now she does not know where to turn.

“Sometimes he is violent and the medication is not working, it’s left to me and my grandfather to pay for his medication…… we are helpless and frustrated and do not know where to turn and what to do so we now have to house him in a prison cage,” she stated.

The child peering through the cage

The disease he suffers from is also called “Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)”.

Autism is a disorder that is usually first diagnosed in early childhood.

The main signs and symptoms of autism involve communication, social interactions and repetitive behaviors.

Research shows that the disease “Autism” remains a challenging condition for children and their families, but the outlook today is much better than it was a generation ago when most people with autism were placed in institutions.

Edwards is hoping that the authorities in Dominica will find some way to relieve her plight.

I may seem a bit mean in my comment to some but before i do comment I would like to say I am not. First question: Why is everything the government’s fault? No I am not associated with any political party. But on a serious note. This child is 15 years old. Autism is something that can be controlled. So the mother has been waiting for help for 15 years? simple things such as loud noises or even changes in an autistic persons routine can have them go into a temper tantrum. Autism is different for every person who suffers from it. Has the mother done any research on her own in reference to the disorder or has just gone on what the doctors have told her?

Parents of autistic children have a part to play in the control of this disorder and locking them up or chaining them to beds is not going to work. It is not their fault and neither it the fault of the parents or the government. I would not recommend or support putting all these children in one home. They are not orphans, they have homes and families. A center where they can go during the day would be fine. Parents should be trained on what to do and what not to do.

Simple characteristics of being human that “normal” people simply are born with, these children have to learn them. Patience is something that parents need to have, it is your child. They have speech issues, socializing problems and some would prefer to be alone. Try to be in the body of an autistic child. It can be frustrating and so retaliating should be expected just like when babies cry when they can’t speak yet when they would like someone to understand them.

It is sort of like that for autistic children, their brains can’t make simple connections and they can’t put meaning to the words they hear.

Stop pointing fingers at who is to blame. Children are involved here and it is a shame that the first thing people do is point fingers. WORK TOGETHER, STOP BEING SO SMALL MINDED, FIND A SOLUTION AND REMEMBER CHILDREN ARE INVOLVED!

Those of you who know nothing about it do some research. And please remove this child from the cage, i can tell you he is scared, but he can’t say that to you. No he is not wicked.

We stand condemned as a nation! We spend millions on political campaigns, find the money to sponsor fetes right, left and centre. Provide first class travel for the leadership of our impoverished little country, all over the globe. Yet, we can not take care of this? Where are our priorities, our compassion. We promote ourselves as a caring, especially friendly nation. Are we?
Situations like these need to be taken care of first before we even think of the next bottle of black label.Yes I am guilty too but am more than happy for my tax money to be prioritized for spending on the wellbeing of our disenfranchised.

After hearing this lady plight, it only reiterate to me how backward and prejudice our country is.
This is not a problem which started yesterday, but hundred of years ago.we are probably some of the most non-compassionate people in the entire world.
We are probably some of the most ignorant people in the world.(lack of knowledge). How do you expect to meet the plight of people when our attributes are all of the above? Our small mindedness and prejudices have caused us to stamp out our brothers and sisters because they are not normal as us. After we do those things we go about claiming to be called a child of God, and vehemently ague with people about where we are going to spend eternity. As Jesus would say, hypocrites and vipers. We are such hypocrites that we are even blinded from the true meaning of the world. For those of us who read the bible and say we understand it where are our balls to stand up and demand that our less privilege brothers and sisters have the god given right to live and enjoy everything as our brothers that are more privilege. Jesus, was always looking out for those who were poor, and had less and mandated that we should share with one and other, and love thy neighbor as thy self. If we call our selves god ministers we should take a stance and demand that the Government of this country must put measures in place and provide services that can bring about dignity and respect to our fallen brothers who by no fault of theirs are living in a bad predicament. How can we expect to get God’s blessings if we do not provide the great commandment? We need to be compassionate, strive for justice and get rid of our prejudices, or we will remain backward and many people will die and leave this earth unaware that life have much more to offer than our mickey mouse way of thinking. Shame on Dominica for not caring about our own flesh and blood.
Presently, am studying the degree of people with intellectual and development disabilities, and my dream is to come home in 5 years and bring a new perspective and vision, and create a voice and awareness for these fallen people. Everybody is worth the same amount by god’s standard and no healthy person have more right on earth than some one with a disability. I am destined to accomplish this desire, because it is God’s will for my life. I must succeed, because it is not my plan, but God’s, and as we know, no one can prevent the will of God from taking place. The Government need to create a special department in their government to take care of people will all kinds of disabilities. Every year the government must allocate a certain amount of funds to pay for those individuals services. These funds must be able to cover the clients room and board, day schooling, medical visits and emergencies, and entertainment.Do we not all just want to be able to have those four basic things in life? the government must set up a program within the social security whereby, they will provide a monthly check to take care of those individuals needs. Anyway, i do not have enough space to elucidate all my knowledge and ideas , so i will reveal the rest at time.

This is the second case I’ve read so far regarding challenged people. It begs one to infer there are more unreported incidents of challenged individuals who are not receiving the proper care they deserve.

We hope that these issues are reported and dealt with timely and effectively.

Very sad. But it’s still not clear, what kind of help is needed. What would help this boy and family best at this moment?

Is it a doctor to review the medication prescribed?
is it a professional caregiver to look after the boy?
is it an institution for the boy to live in?
is it a medication/money for medication?
does this boy have anything to do – books, educational games etc? being in an empty room doesn’t help his condition.

DNO, could you please provide more information or leave contact details of the family. I think there are people who wish to help, whether themselves or with finding some organizations/people, who can help.

Why is he caged like an animal?? the gonverment should have programs, or a facility to accommodate kids with disabilities,so that they are not locked up like animals. I do however, feel for this woman, because its difficult caring for an autistic child,I have a nephew who’s autistic, and see the the struggles my borthe and wife faces. But with financial support from the goverment here, they are able to put him in proograms for kids with special needs. He is treated like and equal, and is well loved. He is not locked up like an animal. The Government on Dominica needs to start really shifting their focus on such important issues instead of the petty they are often fighting about.

I feel for this mother. Dominica does not have the resources to help families affected by having a child with ASD. I work for a renowned facility in Canada that deals with children with autism. My heart lies in Dominica and I have been trying to get through to anyone in the government to see if there is funding available to start a program for these families, yet have received no response. I would be qualified to set up a facility or clinic in which I could perform behaviour therapy with these children! I could also train lots of young people on how to work with these children! In addition, the team I work with in Canada are willing to come down and do assessments for free if the government can help us get down there as we are a non-profit agency!

If anyone knows of someone I can contact, I would appreciate that information because I know that this family is not the only family in Dominica! The psyc ward with Dr. Benjamin is not the place to put these children! Please help me try to get funding from the government for these families and children!

Let me point out that autism is NOT a disease and he should not be medicated.

He and his family needed help from the day he was diagnosed, but unfortunately we do not have the facilities in Dominica to deal with it.
Unfortunately I can’t help, but I have worked with autistic children and I have seen them strive, because the society in which I live provide for the needs of their autistic children. It takes alot on the part of the parents and the community to understand what is going on with the child, inorder tht he or she can have a pleasant life.

Having an autistic child is no different than having one who is either blind, deaf or dumb.

    • Anonymous
      March 3, 2012

Yes it is different. Kids who are unable to hear, see or speak don’t have behavioural problems etc. unless they also have a diagnosis of Autism.

There is much, much more to an autistic child compared to a child with disabilities like not been able to hear, see or speak. Also, all autistic kids are not the same.

    • Anonymous
      March 3, 2012

An autistic child is very different than one who can’t see, hear or speak because an autistic child has a lot more issues to learn to deal with if at all compared to a child who can’t speak, hear or see.

There are also different stages/levels of autism which means that one autistic child cannot really be compared to another.

This is now becoming a serious issue, we see more and more kids being born with this disease, however, our policy makers have taken a do it on your own approach. It is a proven fact that these children after reaching a certain age, cannot live within the confines of a home but must and I repeat must be placed in a specialized institution.

Do we have such an institution? The answer is no! Do we have persons trained to deal with these conditions, the answer is no!

So many graduates with psychology training, when they come back they offer them jobs in the ministry as typist.

Government has not invested wisely in its human resource. A couple of these graduates should be further invested in, sent abroad to do specialized training to deal with these conditions, and in addition, a home need to be organized for these kids.

We have so many doctors unspecialized on the island, no one is paying attention to get these young people specialized. They waiting for these people to take the same underpaid salaries to go study. These professionals are under dire stress, they operate under dire stress, low salaries, poor working condition and no incentive for further development.

However when there is a need we see our government quick to import cuban doctors and doctors from elsewhere, who as soon as they learn the system could not care one hoot about government work they running down to Ross with government vehicle and gas to make extra money for them to get rich in Dominica overnight while the house officers which are the Dominicans who can’t afford to go specialize are overloaded with work at the hospital.

Government needs to put its money where its mouth is and stop waiting for something terrible to happen like what happened in Grammar School to act. We need to fix our health system! We need to fix the welfare division!

    • Jay
      March 2, 2012

We do not need to institutionalize children who are diagnoses with autistic tendency. First they are children, and then their diagnoses are second. They can function in a regular classroom setting as children without autism; however early intervention at our schools are needed for any child with a diagnosis of autistic tendency.

its not a disease its a disorder and if from an early age the children who have it are taught certain life skills and other social ones then there is no need for them to be caged. In the caribbean- Dominica- we do not have persons trained to early identify this disorder so as a result it becomes to late before steps are taken if any. i think the job falls on the parents you need to be aggressive in seeking help for your kids, in looking for the help that they need so that disorders like these and many others can be detected early. We can not sit and wait for the government to do it for us… one person mentioned that they are part of a program in Canada that deal with such kids. I say if you really want to make a difference you should not wait for the government to say yes you can come take up the challenge and do what you think you have to …

Autism is not a disease it is a disability and it is so sad and wrong for a mother to put her disabled child in a cage. My heart goes out to you but more to the child!! This child already feels different and knows that something is wrong with him and because this toddler is not accepted with the rest of the family he thinks that is why he’s put into a cage.
That is a form of mental abuse on top of his disability. It’s great to seek or cry out for help but mean while the child requirements are important. His requirements are challenging and needs to be met.
The government should assist families who faces these challenges and should build a special school for these children. Parents also has to educate themselves and do research. These kids need special activities/games, love, care, art, music and group activities. NOT PUTTING THEM IN CAGES!!!!

As someone who works with kids and adults with Autism I empathize with you. There are means of managing behaviors. For the record there is no treatment for Autism. While many here say dont medicate sometimes medication is a big help in addition to the behavior modification to assist families. Also the types of food you give your child. Reduce flour or wheat based products. Gluten is not a good thing for kids with autism. You want to givie him alot of plant based foods.

You can also help him by trying to be calm and soothing. What is he like when he is not having behavioral issues. While it seems like locking him up is the best approach it really is doing more harm to him than good.

    Hope this helps.

    • Anonymous
      March 3, 2012

I know a lot of autistic kids who are eating wheat based products and their behaviours are just fine so removing wheat from the diet only works for some kids. And I also know kids who are not medicated and are doing fine. These kids don’t need medications, or to be institutionalized or special schools. A lot of these medication just create side effects that make behaviours worse. We need to remember they are kids first who need to socialize like the rest of us not just lumped together and dealt with. They can attend the same schools like the average kid just need to have some classes/classrooms that meet their individual needs. Some autistic kids also function quite well in regular classrooms and some of them are even smarter that the “non’autistic” student. A lot of time, investment, love, understanding and specialized trained individual, teachers etc. is what they need. The little boy in the cage could really be a smart child but nobody knows that because he was probably labelled as retarded or unable to learn.

To Ms Carbon, please get your son out of that cage and rearrange your home to suit him. He pulls things down keep them out of his reach, read to him, teach him when you can and love him more and more each day.

@Sad. This is exactly what I was thinking of. We as Dominicans need to return to those times when we really cared about and looked out for each other. We can no longer rely on the government to solve all problems, but rather should come together as a community and nation to assist.

Another blogger earlier mentioned the setting up a link on DNO to source funds. That’s great because not only can these funds be used to assist the mother in need but also it can be used to source qualified persons in the region to give the necessary training for these parents.

I feel sorry for this mother. She has a crucial and valid concern which she cannot handle on her own as well as taking care of her other children. It is a sorry sight to see a child in a cage. She had no alternative but to place him in there. The government must assist this lady.

She is in dire need of government assistance for her autistic child. The thought crossed my mind that he may be frustrated. He is a person too. Due to his situation, he is unable to relate to anyone. He may also be indoors all the time, unable to communicate with others and of his feelings. This could frustrate him which is why he throws a tantrum and damages the household items. Consider a baby or young child who has not yet learned to speak and communicate performing the identical act. Obviously something within him is causing this behavioral pattern. Whatever is in him needs to be released. He should be among people, to be able to laugh and talk, the latter, in whatever manner he could, with especially those who have the identical or similar problem. A special home and/or a special school would aid him in this respect.

Medication may work for only a while. The body gets accustomed to medication and then will no longer react to it. This occurs to adults who suffer from an ailment. It also depends on the type of medication which could be effective to calm him and deter him from throwing household items around. The doctor who administers to this child should be fully aware of this and try some other medication which hopefully will stabilize him.

In bygone years parents who had retarded, handicapped and autistic children did not receive assistance from the government. They were the ones who took care of their children with (probably) no help, financially or physically from the government welfare services. I visualize that this could be expensive, tiring and frustrating for them. Furthermore mothers are becoming older and they may not have the strength as previously to take care of the children especially in the case as her son.

I view the present situation in Dominica as more progressive than in former years. The government should look into the possibility of having a home and also a school constructed for these children where they could be properly cared for and probably learn something. This should commence when the children are able to attend school

From the moment parents recognize the problem, they should consult a doctor to examine and diagnose the child’s condition and provide confirmation that the children suffers from this ailment and is in need of help; that the parent(s) would require medical and physically help.

What a coincidence! At this moment I am writing this, the Holy Mass on Eternal Word Television (EWTN) has commenced on Catholic Radio. The prayer at the commencement of Mass is for “Autistic children, their parents/family and doctors who take care of them and that a cure will be found for this illness.”

Continuing, some people may make the statement that the government does not have the funding for this purpose. This is an important cause which should not be overlooked and caste aside. The government must take care of its people and especially those who are “special needs” ones. In time and hopefully soon enough, the government will have to find the funding to aid those children. The government should present this concern to a relevant non-profit Agency. They should seek advice and with the hope that the Agency will assist with the funding.

The workers in the home would have to take a relevant course and be trained in order to administer to those children whom, today, are considered “people of special needs”.

I recognize that this would be an expensive undertaking. Another suggestion is that a school should be constructed for those children with special needs. This would also require specially trained employees who will be able to administer to them. When they are old enough they should be enrolled in such a school. There they would participate in activities suitable for them with other children of special needs. Parents would notice a marked difference in their child of special needs.

The government should conduct a research on how many children of special needs there are in each village and town and the possibility of opening such a home/school. May this be done, in Jesus Name, I pray.

God’s blessing and peace to the parents who have children of special needs and who are taking care of them under difficult circumstances as this lady and mother and also to others who are taking care of those children.

May a cure be indeed found for autism and all other ailments as downs syndrome, cystic fibrosis and other ailments. There are many.

        @ ….

It is obvious that this writing is not for people as you and also does not pertain to you. Just bypass such writing for you will not comprehend it.
You give me a lot to write about. What goes around comes around. Fools laugh at their ownself. This is one reason why some people do not progress in life. They are not willing to learn from others and those who are more intelligent than they are. I feel sorry for you unloving, senseless, and inconsiderate person that you are. Learn something from intelligent people.
The world consists of intellectual people and less intellectual ones and everyone should know their place and where they belong in this category. This is in addition to minding your business, knowing your place and where you fit in and not offering advice to those who are educated and intellectual than you are. That is the problem with you who are less intellectually- inclined as you have admitted.
There are some people who are envious of others, their intellect and what they write. Intelligence could be hereditary. It could commence right in the mothers’ wombs and after they are born through their parents discipline and education.
It is like being envious of ones “mortal and spiritual gifts” as endowed by the Holy Spirit. This is one of the sins, a grievous one against the Holy Spirit. You are in dire need of mortal and spiritual education and enlightenment.
You must first learn to speak English, spell and correctly and be articulate prior to utilizing a computer and posting comments, criticism and negative ones. It indicates that you are a jealous and an unhappy person who also lack peace and are unable to generate it to others be it in writing.
This is the problem with some people of today as you who own computers. These days nearly everyone owns a computer, educated and non-educated and who do not know how to operate or as much as search for the correct words and spelling.
I do believe that prior to purchasing a computer, they should learn the above. They are the ones, as you who become the laughing stock of those who read your “poor language and spelling.”      Do you think that we who are intellectual/educated are not laughing at the poor language and spelling that you post on this Website and which make no sense whatsoever, giving others a poor impression about some of you who also laugh at intellectuals? I also believe that you disgrace this Website. I do think that you should be ashamed of yourself.
Intellectual people would appreciate what intellectual people state and write. They would comprehend them and never laugh at them. You need to be transformed but I do believe this is beyond you and you will never change.
You are in no position and out-of-place to offer advice to those who are more intellectual than you are. Do you think that intellectuals would take advice from non-intellectuals? Know your place. You fail to comprehend common sense and important and sensible writing.
The writing is long for people as you who may not comprehend certain jargons, educational and medical terms because of your limited capabilities.
Advice is needed for some people, no exception government – politicians, doctors, etc. and people as you.
Dominica has a grave problem and this is also assisting people who are vulnerable as the disabled and those who take care of them. This needs to be rectified.
It appears that something is radically wrong that the mother of this poor child who is autistic is unable to receive government assistance. If people as you are not able to comprehend that and what is written, then you are still “a baby, a child who still needs milk and not solid foods” (Holy Scripture) who also need to return to elementary school and learn the basics. May God assist you accordingly.

        @ kush

Life is a growing and learning process. Bypass it with no derogatory comments. This is the problem with some of you who have been insulting and demeaning others on this Website and who try to prohibit their human right and freedom of speech as dictators and cause them to respond.
I hope the new regulations of DNO will curtail these insults.
Some of you who call yourselves Christians need to learn love for others, consideration for their feelings and to treat others as you expect them to treat you – The Golden Rule.
You have much to learn about communication, respectful dialogue, exchanging ideas, providing your comments be it objecting due to your mentality in a courteous manner, learning what is beneficial from others, On-Line etiquette and good manners.
Retain what is good for us, appreciate it and discard what is not good. We need to accord others their due rights and dignity.

Sir, on a serious note your comments are too lengthy. Summarizing your points would be a much better approach.

Additionally, your writing reflects hardly any topic sentences that informs us what the rest of the paragraph says thus makes it tiresome for one who simply would like to get the gist of what you would like to communicate.

Lastly, if you choose to write lengthy paragraphs I suggest they are more organized.

I feel your pain. Having a child with autism is something that only another parent who has the same situation can understand. Society has no clue how painful this can be be. I would suggest:
    1. That government conducts a survey of this current situation to find out who are the families affected
    2. Develop a thorough program with ABA therapy and the likes for children during the day
    3. A night care program for those who are severely affected
    4. Reduce the level of tax paid by families for children suffering with this disorder or similar one
It is time that this government directs its attention to those who really need help and stop giving out handouts or fulling their pockets, i am in tears reading this article. THIS COUNTRY IS IN PAIN, I AM IN PAIN!!!!!!!

A SPECIAL PLACE SHOULD BE BUILT IN DOMINICA TO WELCOME HANDICAP CHILDREN DURING THE DAY ,WHERE PEOPLE THAT ARE SPECIALIZED OR EVEN THEIR OWN PARENTS CAN BE EMPLOYED IN THAT SAME PLACE IN ORDER TO CANALIZED SUCH A DIFFICULT SITUATION WHICH IS NOT CONCERNING ONE PERSON BUT ALL THE ENTIRE SOCIETY.KEEPING THESE AUTISTIC CHILDREN AT HOME WITHOUT ANY ACTIVITY GETS THEM MORE VIOLENT AND IRRITATED BECAUSE THEY DO NOT SPEND ENOUGH ENERGY WHICH COULD BE SPENT IN DOING CERTAIN EXERCISES OR LEARNING DIFFERENT SKILLS .
GOV’T IS RESPONSIBLE OF EVERY ONES WELL BEING. WHO FEELS IT KNOWS IT ,WHEN EVER YOU ARE STILL CAPABLE OF HAVING CHILDREN YOU DO NOT KNOW WHETHER YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE A HANDICAP OR NOT.YET WE MIGHT BE BORN AS A NORMAL CHILD AND SOME DAY BECOME A HANDICAP…I WISH THE BEST TO THIS LADY AND HOPE THAT THE GOV’T WILL HEAR ABOUT THIS MATTER AND GIVE HER THE HELP SHE NEEDS.

STOP FREAKING MEDICATING HIM; that’s worsening him! I see this so many times, having worked with children with behavorial problems, and the doctors only remedy is to medicate the child. That is bad, because WE ALL know, those medications bring on additional symptoms that is doing more damage to the child! Though, I certainly understand how this illness will drive parent(s) to settle for medication to get a “break” from the actions of a child. My heart goes out to her as a mom myself, but I’ll tell you one thing; NO ONE will label my child nor will they medicate him! Every child is different; many times, children act out to get attention and love, because they feel deprived of it! My suggestion to this mom is–more time with this one; he needs more quality time than he’s getting.

I agree with your comments here. However, when people are not properly educated, it becomes difficult for them to make conscious decision. We are taught to trust doctors, priests, teachers, preachers, politicians and the like. She only wants to help her child. She is doing what she thinks is right, because she has no other recourse. Oh Jesus. I feel the lady’s pain. I am happy that she is finally speaking out in her quest to get help. Hopefully the authorities step up to the plate and do what is right for the sake of the child and family alike. In the meantime Mrs. Carbon has to be very careful because the laws on the books “Children and Young Person’s Act #17 of 1970” can send her to jail in a minute if it is found that she mistreats the child in any way.

May god give her strength and the authorities give her the help the rightfully deserves.

  43. Totally Psyched
    March 1, 2012

Oh my! I feel for the family. Autism is something that should be treated at a very early age and treatment includes intensive behavioral therapy to mold proper behavior. This poor child obviously has fallen through the proverbial cracks. However, please take this child to a psychiatrist to treat his symptoms of agression and agitation. Antipsychotics, antidepressants, and medication for ADHD usually work very well, but therapy to teach him social skills is very important. I know caging him is probably a last resort for the family and that they are obviously overwhlemed. But it is inhumane to keep a child in a cage. So please get help from a psychiatrist soon. Good luck to you.

  44. Stupes

Dominica has no institution where you can take kids with these problems so they can learn to channel their illness into something meaningful and at least contribute to society in whatever way they can and this is sad. I can understand where you are coming from.Keep trying your best. but putting him a cage might only make him worse.

  45. SaylC

omg…not only is that parent going through alot bt that child is hurt also..to be cooped up in a cage like an animal is no joke..and he cant do anything about it… Allas that’s real sad…well my prayers out to that family

  46. March 1, 2012

Housing the child in a cage will only make situations worse. He is most likely angry from the sheer frustration of coping with trying to communicate in a world he cannot truly comprehend and which does not comprehend him. The mother and family must research ways to provide him either clinical therapy that could teach him skills to help him communicate and manage his anger, or they can research online and learn ways they could teach him to cope and communicate. It is a tough and rough road but better late than never. And certainly better than caging him. He may also need to be removed from using the medications he takes. While it may have helped him at a younger age, his growing body and severe hormonal changes at this age of his life can often interact and cause problems with medication. I hope someone will pass this advice on to the mother. She must access all the medical help she can get him, but most of all she and her family must learn how to teach him to cope and help him develop more communication skills. I wish her the best

    • OH Boy
      March 2, 2012

@Kalinago Woryi…so why do you think she is appealing for help? And further more were you not able to comprehend from the clip that she has been seeking help and that she is at the disadvantage of the poverty syndrome. Those in authority perhaps just sees her and her son as a lost cause. Not so long ago on this same DNO site there were two reports which had over a hundred comments in reality how many of these commentators actually tried to offer help or contacted DNO to ask them to set up a donation page for this cause? Well now I am asking DNO to try and set up a donation page/link in favor of this autistic child and all of us who have so much commenting to do can spend less than a minute donating a dollar or more to help this family seek the appropriate care for their child. Too much BLAH BLAH BLAH and no $$$$$$$$$$$ and direction to the right place to go and the right people to speak to. All you keep getting from the Health Department is that we are looking into it and trying to source the finance. So much intelligence and no common sense. Please DNO let’s look into this link and see how we can raise the funds and select our own people to go and help this family. Not the Ministry of Health or Dr Benjamin let us do it ourselves because if we give them the money we won’t get the satisfaction we need. They are just going to pump him with pills and put him in a room at the PMH mental health section; we want more than that.

      • March 2, 2012

@Oh Boy – notice that my comments were geared towards the family empowering themselves with the information needed to help them learn how to help the child themselves – IN ADDITION to whatever clinical help they could get. I agree that the family could benefit from public donations, but if they do not learn how to to cope themselves, and how to help the boy cope and communicate, then no money can help. And please do not assume I spend my time posturing from an armchair. If you have the know how, then create the fund and and advertize it. Berating people about sharing their thoughts and opinions is no way to garner support for this family

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. While it is true that autism is not something a person simply “grows out of,” there are many treatments that can help children learn new skills and overcome a wide variety of developmental challenges. The government should have services to assist in-home behavioral therapy and school-based programs, assistance should be available to meet the child’s special needs. With the right treatment plan, and a lot of love and support, your child can learn, grow, and thrive.
Become an expert on your child. Figure out what triggers your kid’s “bad” or disruptive behaviors and what elicits a positive response. What does your autistic child find stressful? Calming? Uncomfortable? Enjoyable? If you understand what affects your child, you’ll be better at troubleshooting problems and preventing situations that cause difficulties. May your child likes to draw or listen to music.
The DSS should assist you because your child falls under the Disabilities Act. The government should assist children in need and their families in receiving medical evaluations, psychological services, speech therapy, physical therapy, parent counseling and training, assisted technology devices, and other specialized services.

Her situation is a sad one. If only I could help her. I do not know what medication he has been given. My instinct informs me that her son may not have been given the correct medication or that his medication needs to be changed. Surely, there should be a medication which could stabilize him. There are children who are autistic who appear to function in a docile manner.
All I can do is to speak to someone or probably a pharmacist who may be able to help and offer a suggestion. I will do this as soon as possible.
My dear lady and mother you are not alone. My heart goes out to you. You really need help. I hope and pray that the DA Social Services will be able to assist you.
Many children worldwide suffer from this illness. I wished that Dominica had a medical home which could house him and others who may be suffering from this ailment where they could receive appropriate medication. For the time being all I can state is to keep praying to God and also ask Him for patience in dealing with your son.
Do not feel guilty about placing him in that room. You did what you had to do under the circumstances. God knows what you are going through. He has seen your effort in taking care of your son and obtaining help for him.
May He bless you and send you help for your son. My best wishes to you and for peace of heart and mind.
