NYC statement on World Health Day

Alexander Paul Baron
Alexander Paul Baron

Greetings on this occasion of World Health Day, The National Youth Council (NYC) and by extension the youth of the Commonwealth of Dominica would like to take the opportunity to wish you success and importantly Good Health.

This year’s theme, “Beat diabetes” is both cautionary and encouraging. Given the continuing harmful effect of diabetes on the world’s productive youth population, it would be prudent to take seriously the issue. Diabetes is noted for being one of the most popular causes of death among the world’s inhabitants, and every day millions of individuals suffering from the diseases must seek the relevant medical attention to help ease their suffering. Not only is this a costly exercise, but it has also percussions for the labor force.

The NYC is of the view that this problem must be addressed if we are to harness the abilities of our young people. Statistically, there are 422 million people worldwide living with diabetes and it has caused 1.5-million deaths (2012), consequently Type 2 diabetes account for around 90 percent of all diabetes worldwide.

Ironically diabetes is closely linked to the types of food we eat and eating unhealthy foods can increase your chances of contracting the disease.
However, we are confident that the youth can be encouraged to make the right choice with regards to their health. We recognize that as a country we need to address the problem of obesity which exacerbates the problem. To achieve success it is important to pay particular interest in the kinds of food we eat. It is quite easy to run to the corner store to pick up a Coke or a Quenchy or an occasional chocolate bar, if for any reason you do, please consider exercising, eating well and living an active life. It is no coincidence that you are born into the Nature Island of the World where there is an abundance of fresh and healthy foods.

The problem of diabetes must be tackled at the source and the NYC appeals to, first the Family and all relevant stakeholders to make a concerted effort towards educating our nation’s youth to make the healthy choice at what foods they eat.

In closing, I would like to encourage you today to eat well, exercise frequently so that you become a healthy and productive citizen. The NYC joins you and the world in saying Happy World Health Day.

Best Wishes and may God abundantly Bless You.

I also heard that some people could have diabetes and not aware of it. There could be signs which tell people that they may have it.
Avoid too much sugar and salt.
There are some health websites which provide relevant information. Simply Google Diabetes, its symptoms etc.
Eat also fruits and vegetables. Carrots, Lettuce, Spinach, etc. Vitamin C is a must. You could get this in grapefruits and oranges and fresh juices.
Grapefruit is prohibited for those who take certain medication. Your doctor could advise you about that.
Best of all is preventative which is better than cure.
For the young ones, parents ensure that your children eat and drink nutritiously.

      April 8, 2016

      Comrade…… You brain washed fools!
Give it some time, Mr Benoit will make sure that someone he can control and manipulate is on the team. His comrade from the labor party, the new spy in the flock. Lose one spy , adding one.

No one wants to hear you all until you actually addressing the things needed to be addressed on behalf of Dominican youth. Unemployment, child abuse, education, lack of opportunities for young people, how entrepreneurs can’t get start up unless they bote red etc…

But you Mr Benoit cannot address the youth yourself ……….
      The ‘bomb’ will burst soon.

Very interesting…. What is this person’s position and role in the National Youth Council????

The president and presence of nycd has been MIA.
No one said anything about the recent scandal involving young ladies. They cannot because the president has to protect himself and his political interests so he silences the council.Nothing against child abuse or any real matters!

Now he uses someone who is NOT a youth officer. NOT a district youth council president nor executive, he is NOT on the executive of the NYCD, he is NOT staff at the NYCD.NOT a coordinator on the media team. What he is… is a another instrument for the LYO’s… which btw, nycd is becoming. As far as all of Dominica knows the the Publicity coordinator of the National Youth Council is Ms Karla Henry, the President is Mr Jahasiah Benoit and the Media and Telecoms officer is Ms Prisca Julien. Apart from these three there is an executive of what ? 9 people?where are they to release statements on the behalf of…

The article pertains to World Health Day and diabetes. Stick to the topic. Why mention anything else as you did in the first paragraph? It is irrelevant.

      April 8, 2016

Indeed, where the voice of this NGO when all other issues were going on?

Why have they allowed a mad egomaniac to silence them because he has to sing for his supper?

Why allow him to drag them down? Get rid of him and reclaim your voice young people!

      Reclaim your voice!

It is people like you and comments like yours that discourage the young people. The national youth council of dominica is not just about the 9 executive members, it’s about the the youth of the country. It’s the NYC’s job to create a platform for the voice of the youth. The NYC executive members are not the only ones to speak out, they should encourage and empower young persons to speak out and express themselves and give their views on Matters affecting the youth. Isn’t it a good thing to hear from different young people instead of hearing from the same 9 every time? So when articles like this one is published featuring a young person, instead of turning it into a political warfare or try to discredit or discourage the young person, simply respond positively or just SHUT IT and don’t respond as all.
      BTW….
great comments young man, we need to start eating what we grow, invest more in sports and agriculture. I guarantee it will result in us having to invest so much in…

        stop being so foolish.

In any proper organisation …. The executive knows that this is going to happen. Anybody doesn’t just release a statement for the organisation.

Stop letting politics speak for you. He can speak as young person. But not release a statement on behalf of the NYCD when the NYCD doesn’t know about it. Unless you are saying the NYCD is the almighty Jahisiah Benoit alone?

How does someone the executive know nothing about become the person releasing a statement on behalf of the executive? Are you that foolish or uneducated in protocol?

As far as I know that organisation has a president.
A publicity coordinator – who did not know
        A media and telecoms officer
A media team coordinator and the team and none of them knew anything about that

Are you also going to deny that he has made sure no statement was released about other matters regarding youth????
        Ignorant people!
The problem is not the message it is the silence on other topics and the…

Are you trying to tell me that no other youth voice matters except for the team of the NYC? Are you seriously trying to use protocol as an excuse? That it the issue in Dominica, protocol is only recognized when Dominicans are trying to debate or defend. I agree that the NYC should have been aware of the young man releasing an article in their name, but don’t you think that they should be glad that they are empowering and inspiring young people to release such messages. Furthermore to the rest of your concerns there are young people who speak about issues but apparently because they are not Mr. Benoit, or Ms. Henry or any of the others, it’s noticed. You speak about political brainwashed, you my dear are the one who spoke about the lyo’s, I only spoke on giving other young people a chance to represent. Question. Did you know that the RCSDYC always speak on these issues and host orange day activities every month? No, you didn’t, it’s not NYC.
