Parliamentary Representative for the Salybia constituency and Minister of Kalinago Affairs Casius Darroux has said plans are in place to establish the Kalinago Territory as a Health District.

Darroux made that statement while addressing the second in a series of town hall meetings to discuss the 2015/2016 National Budget.

“We are putting documents together so that we can have the Kalinago Territory as a health district on its own so that we will not have to be depending on an ambulance from Castle Bruce or from La Plaine or depending on an ambulance from Marigot,” he said. “We will have an ambulance stationed right here in the Kalinago Territory especially at the Salybia Health District.”

Darroux revealed that the government is also working to have a resident doctor in the Kalinago Territory.

“So in case of an accident we will not have to be travelling all that way to Castle Bruce or Marigot to receive that service, it will be right here in Salybia…” he noted.

Meantime Minister for Commerce, Enterprise and Small Business Development, Roselyn Paul said the people of the Kalinago Territory will benefit from a half-million-dollar small enterprise development project.

According to her the project, which was also announced during the presentation of the 2015-2016 National Budget, will assist in generating employment in that community.

“You have the Kalinago Small Business Development Fund, half a million dollars and so we will continue to partner, support, collaborate with the Ministry of Kalinago Affairs to ensure that you can access these funds and maximize the results,” she said.

Paul describes the program as a special one which targets the Kalinago Territory.

“You better than me would know that you have special situation in terms of access to credit, you own land in common, for example, which you cannot use as collateral and this is a strategy to assist you in creating employment and increasing economic activity within the community,” Paul stated.

She continued, “And so all persons would be qualified, it would be administered through the Ministry of Kalinago Affairs with our support and partnership and I guess the criteria first have to be developed in consultation with the relevant stakeholders.”

Stupes. Just trying to fool people as usual. They cannot even employ university graduates from the Kalinago Territory, is doctor they will put in Salybia. Creating employment my ass, employment for people that are Labourites, not others. A lot of politics involved which is rather stupid.

Skerro you just heard the kalinago chief had a very successful kalinago cultural festival, you and your accolytes did your very best to prevent it from happening, you refused to give funding to it, claiming that you are within budget t is Castlebruce feast not happening just 1 week later, where did you get the money to fund them and you could not get to fund the kalinago festival? is this how you demonstrate your love for the people?
Well the chief is showing you together with his people he can!!! thumbs up to him and all the kalinago people who worked hard to get their festival off the ground and don’t try to come and pour cold water on his success by calling town hall meeting and pretending you care for us; truely your goal is to keep the people poor and they will see you as a savior so they can continue to vote you in position to bring the country to #1 poorest country in the world. Shame on you very poor political strategy only people without a conscience will do such a thing.

This is a good idea.. I’d like to see it expanded to other villages so that those in need of medical aid do not have to wait too long for an ambulance. Hopefully it’s not lip service like everything else from the DLP.

Dominica is one nation made up of Dominican nationals. All who are born in Dominica are Dominican nationals.
For too long they who were once called Caribs were ignored. Of course, no pun intended, they preferred segregating themselves.
I am pleased they are now recognized and will one day have a health district. However,it should not only serve the Kalinago people but also other D/cans in neighboring areas. Therefore, do not practice segregation but desegregation. This is healthy for all concerned and contributes to harmony, peace and unity among all Dominicans.
As the words of the songs: “Reach out and touch somebody’s hand, make this a better place . . . ” to live and “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.”
Let us all keep this in mind and practice it for the benefit of ourselves and of others – for Dominica.
    God bless!

Why? Are Kalinago people more prone to illness than others? Are they physically different. They are part and pareel of our population and should be treated equally, not differently or separately. I even find it offensive that we have a Minister of Kalinago affairs. They do not come from Mars you know.
