Princess Margaret Hospital to be restructured

The Princess Margaret Hospital

Health Minister Julius Timothy is promising a difference in services in a soon to be revamped Princess Margaret Hospital.

According to Timothy, the operations at the Princess Margaret Hospital will be restructured and Dominica will have a “relatively new hospital” soon.

“We are re-organising the entire hospital and we intend to have a relatively new hospital operating early next year,” he said at a recent public cabinet discussion. “The new hospital is a gift from the Chinese government and the intention is to equip that hospital with the latest state-of-the-art technology.”

Timothy said the health ministry is in the process of training nurses so that capable staff will be in place to operate the equipment and to perform services at the hospital.

According to him, a number of health care professionals are also undergoing specialized training as part of the improvement of health services on the island.

“We are now in the process of getting some more specialists. We have sent Dominicans to specialize in oncology, vascular surgery and orthopaedics among a few other fields. We are really getting that on stream.” Timothy said.

Much more cost effective to bring in a bacco, level the existing structure and put a landing pad and helicopter to take people where all the MPs go (and come out alive)

Come on, can we find a way for the birds not to poop so close to the emergency room. Real embarassing. A very dedicated Dominican siser is mopping the poop with a mop. The areas with old furniture under the cellars looks like a dump. Very disgusting. Some people do not believe in prayer but I do. When we had the lecto scare, several of the guys from Alford word were outside during the day. It was just too depressing in there for them. The atmostphere in the hospital is not very calming and condusive to getting better, I’m telling you, there’s no breeze from any mountains. The little old ladies were sweating on the ward. Very sad. This is my experience, and I do not live in DA. Love the Isle of Beauty, but let’s put our trust in God, not a hospital or a doctor. Death comes to everyone and is everywhere, but I’d rather be sick in a US hospital than DA PMH. Just my opinion. Am I not entitled to it?

This state-of-the-art technology should also include malpractice insurance so the unfortunate patients or patient’s relatives could be compensated.

Some people as ‘Princess’ give precedence to air-conditioning. She refers to the U.S. versus Dominica and A/C. Well, the U.S. is the U.S. and Dominica is Dominica. None are to be compared in this manner with the other.
The hospital windows in Dominica are generally opened letting in the morning and evening breeze, some from the mountains.
The hospital windows in those big countries are closed to prevent dust, rain, pollution and whatever else from entering the rooms. It is necessary that they remain closed. Furthermore, if it is hot and humid, opening the windows will not help. People are even told to keep their drapes, doors and windows closed to keep out the heat. There is no air circulating at that time unless it is windy.
Note the difference. The buildings in Dominica are constructed for the warm weather.
The buildings in the U.S. or Canada or Great Britain are constructed for the winter – not summer. The buildings are insulated to keep out the cold in winter. In winter, the heating system is on. In summer it is the A/C.
In those countries, if especially hospitals do not have A/C, the patients could get dehydrated even though they drink water and could die. I am certain that you have heard many people die of the heat in those countries, the majority of which occur in the homes.
During summer’s heat wave, residents are warned, especially the elderly and those who reside in apartments, if they do not have an A/C to go to a Library or other government building which has A/C be it temporarily.
I recently heard that the Mayor of Toronto said he will be looking into having every apartment dwelling equipped with A/C. I hope this is not all talk. Some landlords are cheap and may not want to spend that amount of money. Yet, some of them charge tenants when they use an A/C.
Reason being for the past three years we have had some unusually (abnormal) hot and humid weather. We hardly have had rain this summer. It may be climate change. For those previous years, winter was also mild.
This is an example to inform you that you should not compare the U.S. to Dominica. The weather is totally different. Should anyone have concerns and suggestions about equipping the DA Hospital with A/C, they should address it to the authorities. They are the decision-makers and are in charge of spending the money and how it should be spent.

Thanks for the reference but you make no sense. A human being is a human being regardless of where they are. If you talk about climate, there are some states that have the same tropical climate as Dominica. That is the least of reasoning why patients should be sticky and humid and frustrated in a hospital.

I concur with the comments of Miss Bronx abd FLORIDA. We know exactly how this works. I’ve been to hospitals in DC, NY, Florida and Maryland. We know better and have seen better. We can’t compare to DA. Any improvement to PMH is welcome. I love my Fellow Dominicans, but my greatest fear is getting sick in DA. I just cannot fathom the system, lets’ pray for better… Please better late than never, but we need this like 20 years ago.

They also do not reply except in certain circumstances. If you are aware of that and comprehend it they do reserve the right to post them or not. They should not be questioned or reprimanded about it.

I love DA dearly but before we even go to the hospital the first place we have to give personnel training is the customs, port authority and immigration. We fail miserably in customer service. That is the fist impression we give to visitors and as the saying goes we rarely get a second chance to give a first impression.
Vaya, the whole country needs a course in courtesy!!!

The Princess Margaret Hospital is a National Embarrassment, so it is with joy and gladness that I read this news. I cannot understand how any logical thinking politiican would not see this as a priority. Hopefully to come with the building is a makeover of the nurses attitude. I apologize for the nurses who are pleasant and sensitive, but there are more unpleasant ones than positive ones, so please forgive me.

As much as we speak of bad customer service in Dominica, the worse I have received was at PMH. The casualty has to be priority. Patients in pain, patients who are dying are asked to sit and wait. No sense of urgency and priority for some nurses. Thank God some doctors who happen to be in the front are there to quickly pull in some patients, other than that, crapaud smoke the patients pipe.

OH yes, a restructuring is much needed, better late than never, so we welcome it.

      @ Princess

Please do not state that the P.M. Hospital is a national embarrassment. People in bygone years put up with it, why should you not. The government can only do so much. Repairs, restructuring and constructing cost money which does not grow on trees. The money has to come from somewhere. Do you know the saying, first things first? You must be understanding and patient.

      • Nunya
        March 27, 2015

“first things first”…like a stadium an un-needed president mansion, a road widened, a school, then and only then we look at a “refurbished” pit toilet of a hospital???????? Not the new “State of the Art” hospital promised, just a polished up infested mess + a likkle training. The staff is not the glaring problem here. They can only do so much with so little.

    • Veronica
      January 24, 2013

I have to agree with you on the customer service. I had the worst experience at the Doubeni ward ( please excuse my spelling). I was verbally abused by a so called nurse who added insult to injury by implying that I could not read. After having traveled for almost two days to see a sick relative, I truly felt like smacking this child and putting her straight. Behind a drawn curtain I then heard another nurse verbally abusing my 84 year old aunt. When I pulled the curtain back she at least had the decency to look ashamed. The hospital was in a terrible state… Ants everywhere, including on the patients. If there has been restructuring…this needs to be applied to the insolent attitude of the so called nurses.

        August 10, 2012

        @ Princess

More people should love and serve God with all their heart and soul and love one another. They should also pray for God’s protection and ask him to help them health-wise, to put their faith, hope and trust in Him also that He will guide the hands of the medical profession. How many people are doing that?
It is stated in the book, Imitation of Christ, “Some people want to live a long life (with health and strength) but they do not live a holy life.”
As Our Lord said, “Render unto Caesar, the things that are Caesar’s and render unto God the things that are God.”

    • Justice and Truth
      August 10, 2012

      @ Mrs. B.

The level of deaths has nothing to do with the restructuring per se. It has to do with efficient doctors, nurses and nurses aide. The ambulance team (paramedics) should quickly respond when they are called for the sick and in cases of accidents. Dominica may need a few more ambulances.
On the other hand every one is given an allotted time. Sadly, when that time is up, it is up.
In addition, throughout our life, we are to take care of ourselves, take charge and care of our health. People tend to blame others for their shortcomings but not themselves and for their negligence. The doctors cannot do this for us. They can only advise us and prescribe medication.
We could be negligent people who allow our health to deteriorate by an unhealthy lifestyle. Much more could be stated about that.

More than happy to hear about the upgrade. I hope the senior doctors who are so stuck in their ways, and refuse to update their education nor allow the newly qualified doctors to practice in a modern way will either change or be upgraded as well. They refuse to listen to the younger surgeons and doctors who are newly qualified. What is the point of the education then? If you learn and when you enter practice you are forced to work in a way developed 30 years ago you will surely forget what you have recently learnt. I just hope we empower some newly qualified doctors and surgeons because the death rate in Dominica toward diseases and injuries can surely improve. Well done to the gov for educating our young, now let us take it to the next level and make the education work for dca.

They need to put time clock machines so people have to clock in and clock out in all the government agencies and department. This will greatly alleviate and eliminate the late comers and people always calling in sick. Once their money will be affected they will chance their attitude towards work whihc will make the system more efficient at the end of the day.

They promised a new 4 lane highway with bypass facilities at massacre and Mahaut. What we got was a resurfacing of the Portsmouth road, with the basic 2-lane and no bypass at all.

So We can expect dem to change a few galvanize on the hospital and paint. Just think of it logically, the hospital should be the most massive and complicated building project, yet Tim-tim says that it will be available by early next year, which is lest than six month away. The only thing that can be done in that brief moment is to change some galvanize and paint the building.

    • Anthony P. Ismael
      August 9, 2012

You’re right on. I too was trying to decipher exactly what Tim Tim meant in his statement. But then again, it is very clear. If all he talks about can be accomplished in less than six months, then you’re dead on. Change a few sheets of galvanize, paint, add some new machines and now we give you, the new PMH. Same as the old one.

In that case he has no faith in the abilities and powers of angels because I would have expected tham to have it ready in a matter of minutes, if not an instant. $50m is being spent on a state malice and it takes years to complete but a better hospital which is urgently needed will be deilvered in months, what a laugh.

Nurses need to be trained in Patient care and Patient confidentiality. Patient conditions should not be discussed with their friends nor other nurses on another floor/Award.

The Oncology floor/burn unit should be air conditioned, in fact all the floors should be air conditioned. A proper x-ray dept. and patient records dept. All patient information should be on a data base/scan and computerized.

I hope there will be elevators!

The hospital should be run by A Board Of Directors/Doctors. We also need a real Emergency Room/Unit.

I hope part of the training is in manners and customer service. All nurses need to take that course, but then again there will be a 98% failure rate.

Will that include using the CAT scanner and hyperbaric chamber as they should. Or will they just remain idle?
Non diving injuries are the main use of a chamber, it cost 900,000 dollars, USE IT.
CAT scanner lies dormant, as does (so I hear) the Mammogram machine
Allow helicopter access on the playing field and we could have the only “A” rated hospital in the region, if, and only if things work as they should.

and I do agree to disagree. But honestly what about
the article that deserve these negatives comment? We all know the PMH where I was proudly trained
is in need of modern tecnology.I am happy that

Many lives can be and will be saved if these new tecnologies are put in place, someone comes in with a heart attack or a stroke the new tecnolgy
help the physicans to diagnose the problem treat it and save lives. It could b mine it could be your

I visited Dominica I became ill. I was proud to see one on the ‘Young son of the soil” provide me with care. I did not pay a cent. Come here to America Health Care is a business. U do not have
insurance u will die. and if u are take care of the bill has to be paid. They ask u for ur INSURANCE before they ask u how u feel. While I was at the ‘Casualty” some of the people were cursing at the nurses. The felt they were not being treated on time.As i sopke with them and had a dialogue not one of the people needed “Emmergency Care” I say all of this to say
we are all Dominicans we are the ones to help our
country.U may say if I am a nurse why don’t I come to my country and I have retired and i am doing just that. Giving back to my country and the heatl care system.God bless us and God bless Dominica.

You should have migrated to Canada. We do not pay for medical care. There are some things we pay for but for certain major operations which are not covered by the Hospital Plan. However, we are comfortable with the Plan as is.
As for the U.S., I do not know why those politicians could never establish one. There is so much arguing/bickering about it.
President Obama, with much objection from the opposition, implemented the HHS Mandate and some people are not pleased about it to the point of wanting to repeal it.

Sounds good. Realistically though, I can’t see a new hospital facility ready by EARLY next year. So far no specific plans or details have been released, and as hard working as presumably a chinese contractor could be we know it takes more than the civil works construction to bring it into effective operation. A new hospital or facilities are always welcome but lets give our people a time that is more realistic.

I welcome the initiative for improvements to our health care at PMH however wee need to ensure that the people they put to take care of us are “caring” people. My best friend was suffering from chronic chest pains and went to the hospital over the weekend during the storm. when she arrived, she could not speak so kept knocking on the glass. one nurse peeked from the back, and slid her chair back with no response. she continued to knock, another nurse came and stood in the door and said “Mam, please have a seat and make yourself comfortable”, she did not even ask what the problem was. Mt friend sat their for almost ten minutes before she decided to get back up to see if anyone was even still in the department. as she was getting up, the same nurse who told her to have a seat passed by, watched her in her eyes, turned around and proceeded to make her way to the door, with her bag and other belongings, it seemed like her shift was over. she never asked anyone to attend to my friend nor did she inquire what was wrong with her. i have nothing more to say but SHAME SHAME SHAME!!! i watched as the entire scenario went down. I called the lands and survey department outside DA, and the way this girl answered the telephone i was shocked, not even a greeting, good morning all i heard was hello, them girl lack professionalism, when asked for some co-worker, them girls talk like you are calling to talk to their man, some of them talk very angrily

You say hospital….? what about the airport? You cannot change peoples personallity..all they need to do is put vidio camaras..at the ER, informations department and the phamacy..or tell them you will send them a pair of white shoes, topup their phone or better yet you’ll send them school bag for their children, when you go back overseas…you’ll see how fast they will smile..

but to be honest the upgrade is needed…

The nurses there are rude, insensitive and I would not put them to watch over my pets. The became nurses because it was one which almost guaranteed a job and maybe they like to wear white, other than that, i can’t see any other reasons.

You must learn to read and understand…..

“The new hospital is a gift from the Chinese government and the intention is to equip that hospital with the latest state-of-the-art technology.”

Didn’t you read that part or ypou was blinded by your foolish senseless politics??

        August 10, 2012

ok, let’s read and understand. The first thing the minister said is this,“We are RE-ORGANISING the entire hospital” no mention of buildings, maybe he missed something there or I do not understand but to my small mind re-organise means to change things around. Then he says the new “The new hospital is a gift from the Chinese government and the intention is to equip that hospital with the latest state-of-the-art technology.” so, which is it? is it a new hospital or an RE-ORGANISED one. “the INTENTION is” what does that mean? will the facility, new or re-organised, be equiped with latest state of the art technology? this sounds just like the 4 lane highway and least we forget, we were promised a new hospital at a different site to be built by the chinese.

Did you not read that the hospital will be revamped? Utilize your common sense if you have any. It goes without stating that it will include all necessary and modern paraphernalia to efficiently operate the hospital.

not so fast, we are talking about Dominica here. It is possible that they build a new facility without any thoughts of paracetamol. Trust me, i live there, I know.

A new hospital by early next year?????? The most important part of what the chinese gave Dominica was left for last. Now it appears as if it will be a half job.

Dominica needs a new hospital – a state of the art facility – not a piece meal – outdated building with new equipment in it.

This government is selling the people of Dominica short. In areas where they need the help and facilities they are completely ignored.

Shame on this labor government

I guess that you are one of the people who would have been happier if the government had not even attempted to improve the present hospital facility. There would have been more meat on your anti-labour bone.

Some of you love to find faults and to criticize. You do never have words of encouragement.
You have read what the Minister stated. Those in authority know what they are doing better than those who are not and who do not have the expertise. They have plans on what will be done. They do not need such advice from you. Save your time for what you state are mere words which are blowing in the wind.

      • Princess
        August 9, 2012

The reason being is that we have seen that you all do not like to take advice. You think you have it covered and at the end of the day, it look like there were no thought putting into the plan. Stadium for example, no thought of training all-round athletes, the roads- no drains.. etc etc etc.. so i guess people are just putting this out there so tht someone will actually be reminded to think before finalizing the deal. It is not criticizing, it is based on what we see.

That is the problem with Dominica, everyone is too grown to take sensible advice. People are so angry and ready to fight, everyone wants to be in charge, people are not doing what they are paid to do. Everyone wants to be on a platform or on a TV camera or hear their name called and they are not really adding anything of substance. Sometimes, it pays to listen, it will make you look good.

Mr. Timothy sir, when you speak about a “new hospital” are you saying that the currently standing PMH will be totally broken down and re-built? Or are you just getting new equipment and specialists to house in the same old raggedy building? I need to get the facts straight.

    Thank you.

When the work is completed you will see. The chinese built a new stadium. I bet they did not patch the old windsor park and told you they ‘that’s a new stadium’.

      • Papa Dom
        August 10, 2012

Well that is because there was nothing to patch because the old infracture was already broken down. You must also never forget that millions of dollars of building materials was thrown away or left to rot.

THEY NEED AIR CONDITIONING AT THE HOSPITALS

    • @WELL
      August 8, 2012

Are you willing to pay for this service? Healthcare not cheap you know?!!?? This is only necessary in certain departments of the hospital like A&E, the intensive care unit, operating rooms and the baby section for pre-matures and the like. And as a tax payer I can’t afford it.

      • Elsa
        August 8, 2012

I agree. The hospital is desperately in need of air condition. All sections!!

      • La Pwet
        August 8, 2012

The way I see it if you complaining about air condition stating who will pay for it I presume you mean the energy costs… if you ask me electricity should be free of charge at the hospital… pretty sure Domlec can absorb the cost with all the profits they continually make each year

      • Choice-X
        August 8, 2012

        @WELL

That’s why they have geothermal, to get electricity cheaper. By the time the hospital is done the geothermal will be ready. So the best time to put it in is now, whilst the chinese are footing the bill.

      • Princess
        August 9, 2012

no vision. Of course the hospital needs Air conditioning. Only a myopic thinking individual would doubt that. Your health is priority. You should think the best for your health.

    • Justice and Truth
      August 8, 2012

Is the temperature of Dominica hotter than in previous years? Is it humid by this standard?
In years gone by air-conditioning did not exist and the patients did without it.
Whenever I visited at the hospital I do not recall anyone of them with a fan and who stated that they are hot. They all did without this system including the doctors and nurses and all appeared comfortable. They were not sweating.
Keep in mind that modern equipment and technology cost money as also hydro costs. Consider, from the heat to cold air-conditioned rooms, as well as being constantly being in such a room could cause people to get sick and also develop nasal and lung problems especially if they are not accustomed to it. A lot of ailments are due to new/modern equipment as mentioned which the doctors may not be aware of. In other words air-conditioned rooms are not really healthy ones. If eventually, implemented, for now air-conditioning should be last on the list. Do your research.

      • Princess
        August 9, 2012

maybe its time to put individual rooms with ability to increase and decrease A/C level. I can’t even imagine going to the hospital in the US with no A/C for the silly reasoning you are giving. If we talking going back in the days; There are lots of things we used to do differently back in the days before technology was so advanced. So it is not a very strong sensible reasoning. Different temperatures/different patients.

  50. August 8, 2012

That is a plus for Dominica. There are some doctors that need to learn how to be tactful when communicating with their patients.
