Prostate cancer takes heavy toll on Dominican men

The Dominica Cancer Society Inc. will join the rest of the Caribbean in observing June as Cancer Awareness month.

The Society continues to be alarmed that Prostate Cancer continues to take its toll among the men population in Dominica. Statistics show that in 2008, 49 men died of Prostate Cancer. In 2009 45 men succumbed to the disease and in 2010, 37 men.

The Dominica Cancer Society Inc. is please with the awareness and response that the on going “Breast Campaign” has brought. However, much work still need to be done to raise the consciousness of the Nation that Cancer is preventable.

The Hoop for Hope Family Fund Day, carded for June 12, 2011 is hosted by the Society in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Youth and Sports and will serve as medium for raising consciousness of the deadly disease.

The high light of the Day’s activities are; 1. Hula Hoop Amatuer Championship #2. And secondly, “A Candle Light Ceremony”, which will end the day’s events.

Prostate cancer is a form of cancer that develops in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system. Most prostate cancers are slow growing; however, there are cases of aggressive prostate cancers. The cancer cells may metastasize (spread) from the prostate to other parts of the body, particularly the bones and lymph nodes.

Prostate cancer may cause pain, difficulty in urinating, problems during sexual intercourse, or erectile dysfunction. Other symptoms can potentially develop during later stages of the disease.

Now the topic is about prostate cancer ,you stupid people are concentrating on gays, wake up and smell the roses, gay life is not a new form of life.We eat to much factory or chemically grown foods which we now call processed foods..eat food from the soil and use compost such as rotten vegetables, animals dung or poo instead of using chemicals,i hope “gramazon” is no more allowed to enter in the country, kfc, macdo should be banned, raise your own animals ,at list you are sure of what they eat,..Hope this helps..and good luck to those who are going through such pain and men get yourself tested …

Please get educated before responding. How does “bogarring” like you call it have to do with prostate cancer? There are straight men, and I mean straight like an arrow who have or either succumbed to prostate cancer and I cannot see how you have drawn such conclusion. I am a female and I have family members who are dead today because of this cancer and YES, THEY WERE STRAIGHT.

I disagree wholeheartedly that this comment (bogarring) contributes to prostate cancer. My father and borther died of the disease and neither was gay or “boggared”. I know of countless other men who currenlty suffer from pc and are fighting for their lives. Some people think that they have to commect on EVERY story read on DNO whether their comment makes sense or not. It’s such a strange phenomenon.

Guys, please understand your risk factor.

If your father or brother has prostate cancer and you are of African descent, you are twice as likely to develop the desease as the rest the population.

Get yourself checked. This digital rectal exam, although not the most dignified procedure, only happens once a year for 1 minute. Don’t let that get in your way.

don’t hesitate. get checked now and as regularly as advised by your doctor.

The Prostate exam can also be done through a blood test, but if you have to take a finger up your ass to save your life, i really do not see the issue. Lets get over these fears.

    @weh

Maybe we should take a look at how we go about growing our ‘local produce’.

Cut down on all those imported herbicides and weedicides that are band from use even in the country it’s manufactured in. That in itself should tell you something.

Some of these chemicals even remain in the foods that we grow. I’m sure many of us have observed some yams and other root crop that have rotten spots growing from their core…

All of those chemicals have also been seeping into our water supply…

Dominica is supposed to be the nature island of the world so let’s sit down and have some dialogue
with our educated and experienced agronomists to find natural alternate solutions to weed and pest control.

It appears that the numbers are going in the right direction. That’s a great sign. Lets keep the awareness going and hopefully, one of these days we can contribute to finding a cure.

********* Let’s start in reducing the many crazy type of processed foods we import!!!*********
