Reduction in nurse migration

The number of nurses migrating annually has dropped significantly, with Dominica reporting a sizeable drop in nurse migration over the past few years.
Principal Nursing Officer Caesarina Ferrol told a media conference in Roseau on Tuesday that a manpower study indicated that while the island lost 73 nurses between 2002 and 2007, the migration figure for the 2008 to 2012 period was just 11.
“The problem is much less. We still from time to time have a little trickling of our nurse but it is incomparable with what obtained over the years,” Ferrol said.
According to the top nursing official, no one factor is responsible for the drastic decline.
One contributing factor she identified, based on her observations, is that “the international recruitment seems to have abated to some extent”, with less recruitment teams coming to Dominica in the past few years.
Ferrol added that an increase in the number of nurses here could also be another underlying factor which she said controls the level of absenteeism.

There’s one question I would like to ask. Are nurses the sole property of Mrs Ferrol, the Ministry of Health or the Government?

Nurses pay for their training and are free to go wherever they please to work just like the other professionals. If there is a problem with migration of the nurses then incentives should be put in place to attract them to stay in their country. If they are not migrating like before then something good is happening in the country and or the nursing service.

Concerned, yes you are correct. Nurses are now being recognized and awarded for good work. great job Mrs Ferrol for this initiative and congrats to all those recipients of awards.

@summa cum laude, how do you know about taxes and how people live as nurses in the US. Nurses in the US get paid very well my dear, depends on the state you live in. The reason why there is a decrease in nurses migrating is because there are not enough jobs for the nurses getting out of school. There are many nurses who graduated a few years back and are still looking for jobs in a hospital. Some take up jobs in nursing homes. If you are REGISTERED NURSE I can guarantee you, you are making good money.

    How is the pay?

    • delicespasse
      May 7, 2012

The pay for a New RN is $28 plus an hr. Each year it goes up. As you become more seasoned you can make 50 and up an hr. plus differential if you work evenings or overnight.

Well i work in a hospital, in the states and what it isis that many americans whi lost their jibs went back to school abd did nursing. Hence there have been an influx of nurses, even in nyc now it can sometimes be hard for a newly graduate nurse to get a job……hence there have been less hospitals going oversees and recruit nurses, also a lot of hospitals did close, 2 hospitals were shut down in manhattan last year and 2 in queens

Wait when the standards of education nurses in Dca change and you will see how quick they will migrate. They just not as trained as they once were, so that makes them less marketable.

No it isn’t! Once you pass the regional nurses exam, you can be accepted in almost any country!! Them nurses just getting their experience before they leave the system!!

Lady recruiters are not coming because (1) It’s cheaper to recruit the Phillipinos and other countries that are much cheaper to travel to than Dominica (2) The standard of nurse training here has gone down considerably (3) There’s this new invention called the World Wide Web and Online Recruitment applications. The recruiters caught on a longtime ago how to cut cost and save on airfares. Take a leaf out of their books

@well add to that: the grass is not greener on the other side. Some nurses are not being treated well. Some teachers too. Also the State college output is enough to sustain the balance.

Yah some of them too ashamed to come back home, but a few are back. But they’re catching hells up there. The cost of living in the States, plus the endless federal, municipal and local taxes they have to deal with. Life is not so sweet in the States after all.
