Dominica is experiencing a rise in oral cancers, Chief Dental Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Adaline John has revealed.

Oral cancer, also known as mouth cancer, is a tumour which develops on the surface of the tongue, mouth, lips or gums and tumours can also occur in the salivary glands, tonsils and the pharynx (the part of the throat from your mouth to your windpipe) but these are less common.

“In the last few months we have noticed more than four persons coming to the dental clinic with symptoms and signs of oral cancer,” she stated.

Her remarks come ahead of an oral health survey which is expected to be undertaken from the 8th of December 2015 to February 18th 2016 by the Dental Health Department of the Ministry of Health, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and others.

“Poor oral health has been proven to be worldwide to have unfavourable effects on the general public particularly in children and it is associated with pain, difficulty in eating, affected sleep, and can also influence their growth and development,” John noted. “Based on the clinical observation that we have been doing, we realize that a number of persons particularly in the adolescents and the elderly are reporting a high prevalence of abscesses, extractions…”

She said the last oral health survey was conducted in 2006 and involved clinical evaluation of children ages 6, 12 and 15 years old from 26 primary and secondary schools in the seven health districts.

This year’s survey, will be compared to the previous one and to see how best authorities can improve on the oral health conditions of the population.

A training session is planned for the members of staff from the 30th of November to the 4th of December 2015.

There will be a questionnaire that will be administered to participants and in the case of the six and twelve year olds, the questionnaires will be sent to their parents for filling out prior to the survey.

There is also a consent form to be signed before the survey is conducted.

Sucking doesn’t cause oral cancer, neither does bad oral hygiene.

Cancer starts on a cellular basis. It is the abnormal behaviour of our cells which is normally passed on by our parents who themselves got the syndrome via some abnormal interference with their bodies by foreign matters – eg., pesticide and other poisons in our food and/ or abnormal doses of radiation.

If you don’t want to get cancer, keep your body high-alkalinized (sulphur tablets and baking powder intakes are good for that. Also PEEL all your food before eating it. Modern pesticides can’t be washed off – they stay in the skin of the fruit and vegetables we eat. Try to eat food that is organic – grown/ bred in a pesticide-free environment.

Do research on glyphosate in pesticides used in Dominica – that substance is a major cancer initiator.

Cancer does not come from bacteria, it is a cellular disease caused by irregular assault to our immune system. Why not find out what that assault is dear doctor? I guess that is it too much trouble for you to work out that the likely culprit is to do with pesticides in our food? Check this out: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2014/04/08/roundup-fertilizer.aspx
    and in Martinique: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/whats-poisoning-martiniques-men/ar-BBmsRDD?li=AAa0dzB

Informed health professionals know that the culprit glyphosate which is a known carcinogenic and an important part of Monsatan’s ’roundup’ (which replaced DDT) is behind the steep rise in cancers in the Caribbean at large.

The doctor well knows that oral cancer/ prostate cancer is nothing to do with you. It is something to do with the criminals who are poisoning our food and getting…

Folks are to busy with all the latest gadgets hence ignoring their personal hygiene. Back in the days at school your nails would be checked out, your mouth, teeth, tongue even your cloth. I guess today the school would be sued for checking out such things…
Discipline is breaking down from all angles hence that’s the result…

May this not be mere words. All-round education is required and to keep their homes and clothes clean. This is part of cleanliness and healthiness.
Cleanliness is next to godliness. It is difficult to stamina the presence of those who do not practice overall cleanliness.
Based on their income, some as the elderly, children and the unemployed, due to the cost, may not be able to purchase toothbrushes and toothpaste.
I read, for oral health reasons toothbrushes should be changed at least every three months. For some, it may be less. Due to the cost, how many D/cans can afford them?
For those who can ill-afford toothbrushes and toothpaste, the government should assist them.
Another matter, the proper type of toothbrush and toothpaste. I also read and heard through the Toronto Media that some toothpastes are unhealthy. Some manufacturers copycat the real product. Beware!
Today, most people have internet. They could conduct a research into this.

  8. The Real Facts
    November 22, 2015

There are various reasons why some develop oral cancer. How often do they brush their teeth, gums and tongue? I would think it should be done at least twice a day, morning and night. In some cases, three times a day, after eating.
General hygiene and nutrition must be observed. Do they drink milk? How much per day?
It is amazing how many adults do not practice oral/general hygiene. Some will leave their home, be it at nights and never consider brushing their teeth. If there is one thing I cannot stand is bad breathe/body odor. It is also bad for those who are subject to inhaling them, as second hand smoke.
I am one particular person. This dates back to childhood, my parents’ upbringing.
On occasion, when in company, it is necessary to hold my breathe when the stench is overbearing.
Dr. John, they must also be taught to take a Detox to cleanse the blood. The blood accumulates toxins from their very food and drink. You could suggest the type of Detox.

Poverty plays a pivotal roll in all sicknesses and diseases all over the world. The CHEAP toothpaste which is mostly made in China should be avoided. Read the label on the toothpaste the same way you do for other products. Remember, every time you brush your teeth/tongue, some residue makes it down your stomach. Also, toothpastes are loaded with dyes of different colors which are carcinogens. Which means, they are cancer causing chemicals. Brush your teeth with guava leaves, charcoal, cane peel, and chew on a cinnamon stick for the perfect breath.

Mouth can occurs when cells in your mouth develops changes or (mutation) in their DNA.These healthy cells die due to the changes and unhealthy cells grow.Pipe smokers, cigarette smokers, heavy alcohol drinking, lip or mouth long exposure to the sun,or HPV which is a papillomavirus which is transmitted during sexual activities, snuffing tobacco through the nasal cavity etc ,skin to skin contact..To many people think that what ever trash they think of first might be the best thing to say,you might not have bad breath and have oral cancer, you can have bad breath due to eating a lot of spicy foods with onions ,this doesn’t mean that you have oral cancer. If you always smoke around your children and they end up having oral cancer ,will you say they suck a penis? I don’t think so ,well stop speak crap and educate yourselves to better yourselves and be more attentive and caring to those around you.I’d advise every one to make a dental check at list once every year and good luck ..

Dominica is also experiencing a rise of obesity and the sad thing is, some of the obese have medical background.

    • Dominicans are Great!
      December 28, 2015

Obesity is also linked to glyphosate intake as the substance causes our cells to behave unpredictably (as the lady doctor’s photo shows :)). Do your research on gylphosate used in pesticides in Dominica.

Also, obesity results in the intake of a high amount of non-natural sugars in our food – our livers simply can’t process them, so they end up screwing it up and making it store them as fat.

You want to lose weight? AVOID:-

      Artificial sweeteners (especially aspartame)
Peel your food to get rid of the glyphosate
      Avoid non-natural sweeteners (glycol/ sucrose-fructose, saccharin, etc.),

Sucking was my favorite, I have to say that I got an infection in my mouth due to sucking only to find out that my partner was sucking with four other suckers, and one had STD, without antibiotics and other treatments I would not be here today, people trust no one when it comes to sucking, I brushed, used, used mouthwash, yet my mouth had a bad odor, sucking is playing with fire, diseases, infections etc, the only thing I suck on today is my watermelon, not even sweetie

Why such a gap between surveys(since 2006 to 2015?) What is the purpose of those who are in the health field? So if there was not a rise in oral cancer perhaps there would not be another survey?
Why are we presenting ourselves to the world as being so incompetent in so many ways than the eyes can see?
Our people need to be educated to take care of their health, including oral hygiene. Poor diet could well be a reason and also the consumption of too much sugar(a drug), alcohol and cigarettes, known as gate-way drugs. The government needs to put a ban on these drugs which sometimes cause people their lives(example of one young man who lost his life in South City last year and another one, not too long ago.

    PEACE
