Steps taken to develop an environmental health policy

Chief Environment Officer Anthony Scotland

Stakeholders on Wednesday morning attended a workshop to begin the initial planning of an environmental health policy for Dominica.

The workshop was geared at analysing the situation of environmental health in Dominica and prioritising areas for the development of the policy.

Chief Environmental health officer Anthony Scotland explained that the Environmental Health Department would like to see the policy take effect by 2013. According to him, restructuring of the Environmental Health Department is a major part of the 2013 vision.

The policy will address the strengthening of legislation particularly concerning soil, air, pollution, food safety, plant and animal act and registering the department as a professional body, according to Scotland.

He stated that at a meeting with the Caribbean Environment Health Officers it was proposed that the basic educational requirement for an environmental officer should be a bachelor’s degree and emphasized the need for training officers at the PHD and Masters levels since there is frequent emergence and re-emergence of diseases.

He added that the environment issues are not confined to environmental health but to all sectors inclusive of the utility companies, the Bureau of Standards and Port and Custom Departments.

“We are looking to get feedback from all the stakeholders gathered, put it into document and from there we will make the proposal to the Ministry of Health to get a consultant to work on the policy for Dominica,” he said.
