Urgent appeal for blood

Aurthurton Musgrave, a patient at the Princess Margaret Hospital, is in need of blood – types A negative and O negative.

His relatives are asking members of the public with these blood types to go to the hospital and donate blood as the hospital’s stock is limited.

I’m o positive. I understand his plight but we need all Dominicans to see the need for donating blood when we ask. what ever is stored is for public use. Go through the family tree ther must be someone with o or a negative. Advise to all know your blood group so you can be on standby you never know when the family emergency comes

There are blood substitutes that can be administered to a patient which can cause the body to produce red cells and help improve a person condition significantly. Question is, whether these are readily available at the hospital.

guys, first of all, the PMH blood bank DOES hold blood drives, however, these are done at the PMH blood bank. The reason for this is because outside blood drives require a mobile unit, as well as human resources. It is very costly to do, hence the reason why the drives are usually done at the Blood bank. Secondly, i notice a number of people say that they would give blood if they could. Yes you can give!! Mr. Musgrave just happens to have a very rare blood group, but the blood bank is ALWAYS in need of blood on a regular basis. It may be a newborn baby who requires an exchange transfusion in order to prevent him/her from getting brain damage or possibly death, it may be a hemophiliac who requires a whole lot of blood components to stop bleeding, or it may be someone involved in a vehicular accident who needs blood ASAP to survive. Bottom line, blood is necessary for one’s survival, and sadly, some people do not have enough for themselves in order to survive. So those of us who are healthy and are not high risk for STIs can and should donate blood on a regular basis.

Oh this blood group is rare, not so many people with this blood group, I have that same blood group and i remembered myself going for surgery some years ago and it was so difficult for me to get persons to donate blood, But i was so lucky to get someone with that same blood type to donate the blood but they still did not give it to me, so i guess it was given to somebody else

can we get more detail on this patient! don’t mean to put a dent in everyone’s spirit, but what happened, how old is that person? can this person actually be saved from what they have? more detail….am not gonna leave this long distance and then to find out the person is an elder, have no kids and have a failing liver or something like that! why do people fear death, get your life right with God and have faith in him…and bam if u do die you’ll be going home in peace and eternity with God!

    anyway what’s the details!

He has three sons. He is not elderly. And who knows if he is afraid to die or not that does not matter the point is the blood can help save his life. Even if he was at peace with God if he knows he can be saved why not help save his life!

Is this your best attempt at sounding intelligent. I mean, it is clear you know how to use a question mark.. but what is the relevance of this information you seek.

If you are more concerned about “wasting” 3 hours of your time at most to make the journey, perhaps you ought to question the “christianity” in the position.

The blood bank needs blood……all the time for many patients.
You either want to donate or you don’t.
You need not know anyone’s details……
Were it someone close to you would you feel the same way?
      Unfortunately compassion is lost here.
      So sad.

      February 16, 2011

well how about you go up to the hospital and donate some blood.. and then go and visit Mr. Musgrave and ask him yourself…

Donating blood may save his life or just prolong it a little longer…
He may be old or young; children or no children…

Giving blood will not hurt you in any way (maybe just a little pinch) and will give him more time with his family. If this was YOUR young SON or your GRANDFATHER I’m sure you would a appreciate beyond words a donors blood to save his life or to just give you a little more time with your loved one.

      Get well soon Daddy Musgrave!!!!

I think they need to have people sign up as voluntary blood donors. Persons have to bear in mind that in order to be a donor you must be clean from all STI AND STD’s so by signing up to be a donor you are making a comittement to your self and the person who you will one day give that blood to to be clean. Give Blood it saves life. I am a blood donor in one othe caribbean island and i have help save a mother, father, baby, husband, wife. Please people take this seriously the life you save might not be anyone close to you but another’s loved one.

      February 16, 2011

Medical regulations allow people to donate whole blood once every 56 days. The waiting period between donations can be different for other blood components. For example, donating only platelets in a process called apheresis requires only a 3 day wait before a person can give again. Donating two units of red blood cells through a similar process doubles the waiting period to 112 days.

There should be a blood drive. The hospital is in need of blood so they should go out there. The Roseau market is a great venue. I bet people would be willing to give blood, especially knowing they won’t have to go all the way to PMS.

      February 16, 2011

Was just wondering, if there is a regular and concerted effort aimed at ensuring that the blood supply is wholesome and replenished on a constant basis. Probably something we have to embark upon before long.

I pray that Dominicans heed this humane call and respond in droves and in a hurry.
