UWP donates medical supplies to PMH

The donation was made on Tuesday afternoon
The donation was made on Tuesday afternoon

The Opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has donated a 20-foot container of assorted medical supplies to the Princess Margaret Hospital, following a successful appeal to the diaspora community in the United States of America (USA).

The appeal was made after the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

The donation was accepted on the behalf of the PMH by an electrician, Denroy Moses, and was presented by Senator Dr. Thomson Fontaine, on Tuesday 17th November 2015, a the UWP’s headquarters in Roseau.

“Following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, we reached out to our friends in the diaspora and thanks in large part to the efforts of Dr. Dale Dangleben and the group of Dominicans in the Pennsylvania and New York areas who spend very long days loading this container of supplies … we are pleased at this time to give to the Princess Margaret Hospital,” Fontaine said.

Moses thanked the party for the donation.

“On behalf of the hospital, I want to say thank you,” he said.

Fontaine described the donation as “critical” and one that will benefit the country.

“I think it is critical because what you will find, for example, a lot of the supplies have to do with stuff to treat wounds and broken bones and so on. So we believe that this will go a long way in meeting some of the medical needs of the country,” he stated. “In addition, the PMH will also be distributing to the various health centers across the country because we know that often there is an acute need for these types of treatments.”

He explained that the medical supplies were the most important need following Erika and relief was sought in that area.

“We realized at the time that there were a number of people who were involved in getting food and in our view food was not the most immediate need, the most critical need,” Fontaine said. “It was important, yes, but then the medical supplies are often in short supply and they are often very expensive. It was a very good time we thought that we could reach out and see what we could actually get.”

Senator Fontaine added that he hopes the supplies will be put to good use in the country.

The shipment arrived on island about one week ago.

When something sounds too good to be true; or seems out of place, it normally is. Even so it is very hard to believe. I still somehow expect better from the UWP. I am still waiting. They are the party, who would like us to believe are all above board.

However, each and every time they disappoint. Why is this so? I dare say there are some supporters on the board who will try and say what? I cannot even imagine what because there are scrambled eggs all over the place. Shameful.

What I would like to know is it only UWP supporters that contributed to this medical supplies? if not what’s the big deal this should be sent to the government of Dominica not the UWP headquarters Is it a hospital? Medical supply should be sent to a medical facility not an office so one might say it’s a low key affair hence the SPARKS

  5. November 19, 2015

I wish to revise and extend my previous remarks, based on the emerging fact that the medical supplies were not presented to the PMH or any other health facility on the Island. Why this childish approach to the delivery of emergency medical supplies? Is there any evidence that the supplies were delivered to the PMH? Why wasn’t the entire contents of this 20 foot container delivered to the central medical stores for proper distribution? Was the UWP denied access to PMH to make this delivery? Just asking….

First of all on behalf of the nurses and doctors I would like to thank Dr. Dangleben and his US team who worked tirelessly despite their busy schedule to source these useful medical supplies. I would like to thank the UWP members who received the supplies and completed the process of having these supplies handed over to PMH and the Health districts. Thank you Mr. Denroy Moses for extending your warm appreciation for the donated medical supplies on behalf of the staff and patients who will benefit from them.
This is where the niceties end. It is a shame that there was no one higher up in the administration echelon of the Ministry of Health or the Hospital who could avail themself to receive the donation. What is going on in Dominica? What example are we setting for the young people? We must behave respectfully to all Parliamentarians!

M D …..If seems that there are a lot of information missing. Why is the donation made to look like it is coming from the UWP. Was the Government invited to attend. Why is DNO post slanted to degrade the “electricion”. Like he is not important because of his job.
I have not seen anything that donation was accepted at the DLP Hq. I think the gift from the Dominican diaspora to the people is being used by the UWP to gain political points. We do not need to polarize donation for relief.

Skerrit and company can you reasonably tell me that this small country is moving or can move forward with that type of discourse m disrespect and discord to and for each other?

Really folks I have always thought at Skerrit as PM was an accident and when accidents happen bad things happen and lots of pole get hurt. It takes along time for the injuries and memories to heal – if they ever do. This is what Skerrit, Loreen Bannis and the other characters and jokers have to our country.

All donations are welcomed and thank you all for your kind consideration. I believe even a senior nurse could be assigned to accept this donation, not knowing the facts surrounding the presentation, I am subject to correction when I say that this was disrespectful. Mr. Fontaine has admitted that very early they identified that medical supplies was both a critical and immediate need yet it took almost 3 months to make these supplies available. Why did they not speak Alex Bruno as he and others seems to have had the know how of how to ship relief containers in an urgent manner. Or is this another situation where the UWP is exposed as a bunch of fancy talkers that can’t deliver. Just imagine if these jokers were in office, the country would still be shut down.

It make no sense supplying medical supplies which have short shelf life span. Most of these supply will expire within a six month period. These gifts are presented without the consent and authorization of the Ministry. Medical supplies coming to Dominica must have a minimum eighteen (18) months shelf life span.

These donations are usually collected from hospitals in other countries that are willing to dispose of them because of their limited life span. So while the UWP is making such gesture and must be welcomed. It must be noted that these supplies have a very short shelf life and has to be disposed of within a six month period. That is why no senior health personnel was willing to come forward to accept the donation.

  31. Itassi too
    November 18, 2015

What a big shame! In previous donations made to the hospital the government received it in grand style. As recent as October 15, 2015, Brazil made a presentation and it was received by Doctor Martin Christmas on behalf of Minister Daroux. Today because the presentation is from the UWP they sent an electrician to receive it, because I guess the janitor was not there?

Take a look at the leaders of the ministry of health: Dr. Darroux- The minister and Mrs Helen Royer – Permanent secretay. Both individuals must understand what it means to Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold. A circle is round, it has no end.

They need to remember that it was UWP that sent both of them to educate themselves, while Skerrit and laborites were criticizing the UWP for sending them to school. I know they both have a job to perform, but they must never forget their roots because without the education they would not be qualified. Don’t play Skerrit’s dirty politics!

Why not by the Chief Pharmacist or the Director of Central Medical Stores (the department at the hospital that handles all incoming drugs and medical supplies…and to my knowledge, they have no electricians on staff)?

Where were PMH big wigs like the hospital admin, medical director, ect? Are we going to see from now on that an electrician be the receiving person for all future donations to the hospital? Nonetheless you have a great point here–no doubt

Also, how did they make sure that those supplies are justified as with what the Hospital is presently using–could this be the reason no one in the official group chose to accept those supplies?

I mean that the Hospital cannot just use a supply that is given to them by a certain group or individual–on their patient– who would be responsible for incompetence, if it shows up.

There should be a license identity, in order to use that medical supply; this has to be a must–are these people of the opposition thinking straight? How can they agree to give medical supplies to an electrician of behalf of the hospital, as they pose for the camera?

You not asking yourself IF that is a real medical supply donation or just another photo-shoot by UWP.

so, with all respect due to Mr. Moses, the PMH could not send an administrator, a senior nurse, SOMEBODY with some management authority to accept a 20′ container of vitally needed supplies? they had to send the guy putting up light bulbs?

    …………THANK YOU……………………..

“The donation was accepted on the behalf of the PMH by an electrician, Danroy Moses, and was presented by Senator Dr. Thomson Fontaine, on Tuesday 17th November 2015, a the UWP’s headquarters in Roseau”.

    ……………………………

    It was accepted by electrician??

Nothing is wrong with being an electrician.

But where was the appropriate representative. It would be good if it was a nurse, doctor or an officer of the hospital accepting this gift.

It certainly would not be the minister of health because of the political element to it.

It also would have been best if this gift was presented by someone from the diaspora community!!

However, the gift should be appreciated by ALL!!!!.

    -Thanks

Could someone tell me why no PMH HEALTH CARE official was on hand to receive the shipment?

An electrician that receiving the supplies on behalf of the PMH? Wait nuh, health care supplies for electricians that were donated or wha? You have got to be joking.

So Dominica come now nuh. Psshhh. Wow.

Something seems quite “funny” here and a few thoughts are going through my mind as to why AN ELECTRICIAN was the one receiving MEDICAL supplies on behalf of the PMH.

Were all the HEALTH CARE personnel & managers at the PMH soooo busy that day that not even 1 of them could be on hand to receive the supplies & say thanks?

Was it deliberate that no PMH HEALTH CARE official came to receive the supplies? Were any instructions given from somewhere that no HEALTH CARE official at the PMH show up to receive the health care supplies?

Ahhh boy,……….

Well done to the UWP and those who contributed to having these supplies made available.

But wait! If you presenting medical supplies to the PMH, shouldn’t that take place at the premises of the PMH rather than the political headquarters of the UWP? and shouldn’t it be presented to a senior member of the medical staff of the hospital rather than an electrician who knows nothing about medicine?
These guys must stop playing politics with peoples lives.

You have spoken my thoughts: I was also wondering why not at the Hospital

So do we not see why these supplies were accepted by an electrician. Which of the Executive of the Hospital would stoop so low–as to go to the UWP headquarters to receive hospital supplies?

But that is the attitude of Lennox Linton, to have things done his way–he fails to see that it cannot and will not happen
