“World class” conference on nursing education in Dominica

Nurses in action

A world class conference to observe 50 years of formal nursing education in Dominica.

That’s what the Dominica State College’s (DSC) Faculty of Health Sciences formally known as the PMH School Of Nursing, is promising and they plan to use only alumni of the of the faculty as presenters at that conference.

Dean of the faculty, Denise Edwards, writes in a publication entitled Jubilee Updater, that while the DSC Faculty of Health Sciences continues “to be confident about the quality of education we provide to all our students, we remain cognizant of the fact that nurses function in an ever changing environment”.

The Health Educator acknowledges that irrespective of their graduation date, graduates of the DSC health sciences faculty do not have adequate knoweledge to provide the quality of nursing care that’s expected.

“It is for this reason” Edwards explains “that we use this opportunity of a jubilee
to contribute to the continuing education needs of our graduates”.

She adds “the educational conference will celebrate our successes by having our three graduates who have attained terminal doctoral degrees as presenters. Yes, these are the persons who received their foundation at the noble Princess Margaret Hospital School of Nursing.”

The three graduates to whom Mrs. Edwards refers, are R Paula Abraham, Marie St. Rose and Agathine Scotland who are all registered nurses who have gone on to obtain with PhD’s.

Among the objectives of the conference, to be held later this year, are: to share and discuss innovative ideas for health care improvement, to contribute to the improvement of nursing education and nursing services through research based nursing innovations and to promote and strengthen cooperation among health alumni worldwide.

The conference is also intended to help inspire confidence in younger graduates of the DSC Faculty of Health Sciences which according to Edwards, “is expected to translate to provision of improvement in the quality care to individuals, families and communities while enhancing the development of the nursing profession in Dominica”

Although the conference will be held towards the end of October 2012, registration closes in July “to allow sufficient time to access conference paraphernalia”.

I must pay tribute to PMH as my first clinical practice area. to the tutors at the the time i say hats off to the RN and all the other suppot workers on the wards you were so dedicated and caring . I think this what was tranfered to us as young nurses and I do hope the the senior nurses can tranfer that behavior.t to the younger generation of nurses.
I belive the work load has become much easier than it was in those earlier years.

I am indeed looking forward to the conference(hoping to be there). However success is success no matter the level of attainment. There wil be other presenters with masters and batchelor’s degrees and its not fair that only the individuals with PHd’s were highlighted.

no Bachelor, PH degrees.graduates with honors can surpass the patience, respect, dedication, compassion, self-resprct that a nurse needs to have. some nurses have qualification and not experience. some obtain pass through cheating in all forms, Proper screening must be done too many young immature, irresponsible nurses, probably they obtained passes because of preference and political afiliation and handouts, Cubans were doing a good job DSC need a reshuffling too many actresses. Too many emphases place on higher level and not patient care NEXT LEVEL :?:

Paula Abraham is not medical doctor. She has a PHD in nursing.

Admin: Thank you. We misinterpreted the information.

Angel I mean no offence. DNO. There’s no need to correct anything. The report is correct. It did not say that Paula Abraham had attained a medical doctor degree. It says she received a terminal doctoral degree. A terminal doctoral degree does not mean a medical doctor. A PhD is a terminal doctoral degree. The reason it is called a terminal degree is that it is the highest level of attainment one can achieve in a field of study.
None-the-less we should take pride in the Nursing school because it laid the foundation for those who achieved the PhDs.

Admin: Reader, the previous publication did say that Ms. Abraham was a registered nurse who was now a medical doctor so Angel was right in pointing out the mistake.

    Dear Admin:
In the 7th paragraph there is a typo: it reads:

a registered nurse who’s now a meducal doctor and Marie St. Rose and Agathine Scotland who are also registered nurses with PhD’s.

word should be medical not meducal.

    Admin: Thanks
