Heavy rains, strong winds to affect Dominica

Position of Rafael on Saturday morning

On the current track Tropical Storm Rafael is moving slowly away from Dominica but will continue to affect the island with heavy rains and strong winds, the Met Office is reporting.

Satellite imagery of the storm shows an extensive band of cloudiness spreading across Dominica with radar imagery showing pockets of moderate to heavy showers. This activity is expected to continue during today with winds gusting to storm force.

At 5am, the center of Tropical Storm Rafael was located near latitude 15.7 north, longitude 64.2 west or about 170 miles west of Dominica. ‘Rafael’ is moving towards the northwest near 9 mph with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph.

Residents should continue to monitor the progress/development of this system and exercise extreme caution in their movements bearing in mind that potential hazards, such as flash floods, land/mud slides, falling rocks and hazardous seas could impact the area.

A small craft warning remains in effect for rough seas. The fishing/marine community should pay attention and exercise extreme caution.

DNO will continue to monitor this weather system and bring updates as they become available from the Met Office.
