After remembering a young girl who died from heart problems, a young man from Loubiere has decided to do something positive for Dominica.
21-year-old Okan La Fleur is organizing a bike rally which he hopes will raise awareness of heart diseases on the island.
He also hopes to use the event to raise funds for the Children’s Heart Fund.
La Fleur said the idea popped into his head during the recently held Ti Ti Wi festival in Layou. “I got the idea while attending Ti Ti Wi Festival and noticed the significant number of bikes parked in the area. I then remembered a young girl who had recently died from a heart problem and I thought to myself why not get all these young people to assist in doing something positive while doing what they love,” he explained.
He said the rally is expected to begin at the Roseau Bayfront and will end on the Mero Beach with entertainment and will include bicycle riders, motorbike riders and ATV riders. Participants are expected to pay $10, which will go towards the Children’s Heart Fund.
La Fleur emphasized that the event was by no means a race or a stunt show but instead will be a “slow ride” rally. “I want the police to lead this ‘slow ride’ rally and to ensure that the activity is not one of stunts or showing off but to prove that bikers can be respectful and do something that they love doing in order to help the Dominica community,” he noted.
He indicated that thus far his brother and a few of his cousins are assisting him in planning the activity. However, he is seeking sponsorship from the private and public sectors.
The event will be held on December 2.
Anyone interested in being a sponsor or who wants to participate should call 616-2218.

Pulls on my heart strings. This could be an annual event. These events are huge here in the U.S. I believe the turn out could be great. The suggestion of a raffle sounds like a terrific idea and also, having the Police lead is of paramount importance. Good luck young man. You are a shining example and indeed a great role model for many young people on our beautiful island.

Hey young man, that’s a very thoughtful and positive vibes you rolling with there. I wish you all the best in heading that project.
Now how can overseas folks make a contribution to this program?
Please let us know.
Great job young man, just a suggestion, what about opening a bank account for those who cannot attend/cannot ride so that they can make a donation for the purpose
Also if this will be an annual event, try to see if you can get the business places involve by donating something for a raffle, just a suggestion
That’s a great suggestion
Those are the sort of initiatives that I like to hear from the young people I do wish everything turn out good, also trying to get the business community involved is good even if it’s just to make a donation would be welcome.
Also the Bank idea is good because the folks in the Diaspora can make donations try to set something like that up it’s a good suggestion.
I am truly touched. Good job young man.
