Alix Boyd-Knights elected as House Speaker; Edward Registe elected Deputy Speaker

Knights is the longest serving House Speaker
Knights is the longest serving House Speaker

It came as no surprise.

Voting along party lines, the majority Dominica Labour Party voted for Alix Boyd-Knights to serve as House Speaker for another five years.

Boyd-Knights was proposed by the government while Judith Pestaina was proposed by the Opposition United Workers Party (UWP).

Boyd got 21 votes, while Pestaina received 10.

Boyd-Knights has been the longest serving Speaker of the House in the history of Dominica. She was first elected in April 2000 and was re-elected in July 2005 and February 2010.

Registe was elected Deputy Speaker

Edward Registe was also elected Deputy House Speaker by default since there were no nominations from the Opposition.

Congratulations Alix on your nomination and acceptance again as Speaker of the House. You have done an excellent job which is why the PM re-nominated you.
I wish you well for the next five years.
God be with you and provide you with continued health and strength to satisfactorily perform your important work for Dominica and nationals.
Know that there are many who appreciate you, most of whom may not comment on DNO. You have friends and supporters near and far. Those who know you better (than those who do not know you and who you really are) will always support you. They know your capability of assuming your position responsibly. Most of all, the PM knows this very well.
    God bless you always!

That is a fact. Also is the democratic process by which Alex Boyd Night got elected. No other way but by voting by parliament to determine the fate of Speakers seat. If by any way there is no other way to participate in implementing laws but with someone who you know is capable of handling your affairs, then its your call. And if it is by your vote that the speaker gets elected then by no means should the decision be frowned upon by anyone holding a personal grievance towards Mrs. Night. If the grieved one were to be the one to elect the speaker, and the one chosen was not in keeping with another’s best wishes, then he would be seeing himself now. Only fools bark at a flying bird.

I was a criticism of U W P leaders but they proven today they have the ability to govern Dominica, it’s a interesting debate, they were respectful and humbled we may disgrace with some of the ideas they brought out,Mr. Linton leads his team with unity that’s what the Dominican people want to see in parliament, people were looking for the bad side of Mr.Linton he was humbled.

Congratulations Madame Speaker everyone knows you are the best person for the job.

I hope the Leader of the Opposition finally realizes what position he holds in the House.

If he had listened to you in the first place he would not have made his first big mistake in his first attendance in the House.

My only question is why no member of the opposition pointed out to him what he wanted to do was wrong and he was going to make a fool of himself on his big day, Why no member of the UWP who has been in parliament for so long did not tell him the rules? Or did they and he chose to ignore them?

The leader of the political party with less elected members in the House does not have to be the Opposition Leader. Is he aware of that? Or are they all waiting to see him rope himself in. Someone who cares about him should let him know that so he can do better in the House. His First Day will go done as a fiasco which desperately needs improvements.

It is noted that those who give thumbs down are UWP supporters. Whatever DLP supporters state will never please them. They tend to consistently criticize and never think they are wrong and unfair. This is how unfair they are.
Linton’s first days will also go down in history. Whatever he does, whatever he says will go down in history as the most obstinate leader of the opposition. He dictates to the Speaker to consider what others will say about her in the future but he does not think of himself. What will we and others say about him? He is not building a good reputation for himself nor is he interested in building a good rapport with the DLP government and the Speaker of the House. He sees everything one way and it is his way alone. He does not consider that he cannot always have it his way. Yet he calls the Speaker unfair. It is time that Linton looks to himself, examine his conscience and change his attitude instead of accusing them of what they are not guilty of.

Shut up faceup! Why did they not nominate you since you are the most loved person. Hate is of the Devil and Love is of God. You have all the Shame so Faceup for Speaker. Persons who stand for the truth are not always liked.

    • The Facts

You are one who is unfair. How could you make such a statement? What did she do to you to hate her so much? Is it because since you have a computer and you are free to state what you please whether it is true or not? The Internet could bring out the worst in some people.
You could not be a Christian and a practicing one at that, to make such a comment of hatred. I am warning all of you UWP supporters on this Website, to be careful of your words. We have heard enough of your type of comments and criticisms. One day they will return to hunt you for you will pay for what you state. Keep this in mind.

Registe they wanted a change of speaker Have you stop to ask yourself just maybe Registe could have been the speaker. I wonder when you Dominicans would think things thru before speaking and commenting. If UWP was against Registe they would have put up a name for election, so stop being a d— m fool

According to you DNO, It came as no surprise. However, the one surprise is your headline “Alix Boyd-Knights elected as House Speaker”. It would make more logical sense if the headline read: Skerrit and the DLP reinstated Alix Boyd Knight unopposed. as house speaker.

Alix’s appointment as Speaker should come as no surprise. It’s obviously that as The Government’s nominee the Labour Representatives must support her. That’s normal and natural. I think that the UWP could have saved their nominee the humiliation and withdrawing her name or in fact not submit her nomination and instead abstain if they felt so strongly against Alix’s nomination. Even at the swearing in ceremony Linton could not get it right. Papa BONDIEU !!!

    • The Facts
      February 21, 2015

Sometime ago I commented that if I were Judith I would not have accepted the nomination. What made Linton think that Alix would be bypassed for his nominee and he being the opposition with a few seats? Seeing that he lost the election, I guess he thought he would have won this time. He is not only a pompous man but a presumptuous one. Can he not see that he is making a fool of himself and others as also his supporters?

There is nothing that says that members of parliament are obliged to support their leader’s choice of Speaker. the person holding that post is to be chosen on basis of his/her impartiality. It is for this reason that a, supposedly secret ballot is conducted. I watched said process with fascination yesterday and observed a crucial flaw. The representatives must write the name of the person of their choice on the ballot slip “in their own handwriting”. That makes it very easy to deduce, who voted for whom by those familiar with that handwriting and I would not be surprised if the members were made aware of that before they cast their votes and instructed to tow the party line for fear of reprisals. We should have slips, printed with the names of the candidates and a box to be ticked.

Anyone who expected any different result is dreaming and do not understand how politics work in Dominica.

Everything in Dominica is divided along political lines much like the tribal societies in Africa and elsewhere. The church, the village councils, cricket, the schools, scholarships, social assistance, the civil society organisations, the civil service, the police force, the Office of the President, the Office of the Speaker, the DPP, the AG’s Office, the Office of the Director of Audit are all divided along political lines. The only institution that seems, up to now, to be untouched by political division is Mas Domnik.

Never wish for that for when the wrath of God comes, it will come down on everyone, not only in Dominica but in the rest of the world, unless there is a disaster in Dominica. Pray for everyone in Dominica. This is what you should be doing and not wasting your God-given precious time in wishing harm to others, to Dominica. It is ungodly.

Yes Yolande those disrespectful people do not like persons who are straight. Mrs Boyd Knights is a nononsence person and that is what some of those disrespectful persons do not like her. I want one to say what she has done to them. Aye Respect God first and then you will respect those in authority – Leaders and those at the helm. Wait all you turn will come and then you all will be crying for that same respect that some of you have not given the Speaker. For your information, she is well respected out of Dominica. When all you time come, I will comment and remind all of your disrespectfulness. Give respect so you can earn respect. A lot of people walking around harbouring hatred … boy boy it showing on all you face. You all cannot be happy if you carrying that load. Let the people do what they have to do and when the time comes , they will be replaced. Not one of us is here forever. If you all were so interested in the Creator, what a blessed country this would be. Love

      !
Common sense my dear cherry Juice… The Government nominated her … The opposition nominated another. Naturally the Government side will win (more members). Just like election that you are all disgruntled about although the Opposition got more seats this time around. What is in all you get. Bounce it and let common sense prevail. Next time around! Wait for the election in 5 years time. Then we will all see what will happen. You cannot elect a government or do yourself good by still being vexed over something you did not have control over. You voted for who you want … Your party did not win.. Accept and wait for the next time. Now is Nation building… Vexing only shortening your life span. Why worry … the word says why worry and did you hear that worry adds a cubic to your height. Good day to you and the others who are wasting their time crying over spilled milk. Can you pick up spilled Milk? Behave yourselves.
